I wonder if that would be possible.. swiping the kernel out from underneath all the processes and putting a new one in its place.
You'd need ways of retaining all the state data for each module during the change, and having it translated to the replacement modules. It would have to be done in a certain order, from least critical modules to most critical.
Very difficult to do I'm sure, and would require massive redesign of the thing. But wouldn't it be neat eh?
Are you talking about the more traditional sneakily clever troll type, or this new-fangled brazenly abusive and insulting method of 'trolling' that seems to be so popular these days?
Subnet banning, this bans a user unless they email jamie macarthy with their mp5ed ipids. This is unfair, and banning a subnet BLOCKS A WHOLE ISP SOMETIMES, and not that individual user! This can cause chaos!
Yeah, that's another thing that is really annoying.
I hate it when I've just typed up a well-crafted, informative post which probably involved a few minutes of research on google, etc. and I go to post just to get the "You have been banned.." error.
At least if your ISP has been banned from posting they should put a notification at the top of each page to save you the trouble of writing comments.
It's annoying things like these that make it really frustrating for those of us who just want to use Slashdot, not abuse it!
Not really short term, as gas, coal and oil sources once depleted cannot easily be renewed. But vegetable oil is made from vegetables, and is therefore renewable as long as we have soil, sunlight, water, etc.
I am almost tempted to initiate a "you get a virus your computer get's wiped" policy here.. maybe, just maybe it would make those morons and idiots in sales and marketing think before opening something looking for their advice.
Your elitist attitude offends me somewhat.
Stop your deluded fantasies that the only intelligent people in the world are those who know how to use a computer.
It isn't just Microsoft, they did mention that they are "working with others".
And yes, their products in particular do have a problem with this - it is good that they are trying to sort it out by humbling themselves to ask advice of others rather than pompously ignoring it.
There are already solutions that eliminate weak links such as passwords and fake email. At Microsoft we're combining passwords with "smart cards" to authenticate users. We're also working with others throughout the industry to improve Internet protocols to stop email that could propagate misleading information or malicious code that falsely appears to be from trusted senders. And we are making fundamental changes in the way we develop software, in our operational and business practices, and in our customer support efforts to make the computing experiences we provide more trustworthy.
Now this is progress. From actions like these in the computer software industry we can see that they are gradually moving away from the 'hacker' mentality (as in 'hack it together and hope it works') to a more formal design process. Like, software engineering might actually live up to its title!
And the closer computing gets to more comfortable real-life metaphors, such as using human-orientated media such as eyeballs and fingers, the more comfortable people will generally find the technology.
You sound very money-driven. Consider this: maybe people do things because they care about them with a passion, rather than they are being given spending tokens for the chore.
You have a good point. It amazes me how more people don't see that "Free" as defined by the GNU people doesn't match anyone else's common definition of free.
The licensing hoops that you have to jump through when using and distributing any changes you may have made make it very much not "Free".
... Lameness filters (It blocks a lot of legitmate posts)...
That is very true. I have tried to post code in the past only to be treated to errors such as "average line length to low" or "too many odd characters".
It's crazy. I can't think of any other technology/computer nerd discussion board doesn't let you post code.
Can anyone remember what that thing is that translates C to English and back again? Some guys used it on DeCSS in a song.
This review was posted, word for word, to Amazon on May 13th, 2002, by one Eugene Mah. Pretty nasty work, plagarizing the work of others just to grub karma. Slashdot folks, why do you keep modding this jerk up?
I can confirm that.
Eugene Mah's reviews are on amazon.com here. The review that dknjplagarized is currently the third one down on that page.
released as a double CD so that you can listen to the mono version of the album, or the stereo
That is the craziest thing I've read all day. Why the hell would you need separate mono and stereo versions? Just connect your CD player outputs together like this: Left Out ---\_/------ Left In Rght Out ---/ \------ Right In [Mixer] [CD]
Separately for both signal and ground of course. You will then get the sum of the left and right CD player channels in both channels on your mixer.
If your mixer has a "mono sum" output which does the equivalent, then of course just send that to your amp instead of modding your cables or whatever.

After reading through some of his points, I have to say I agree.
Unix on the desktop has been a complete disaster. I mean, they tried hard, but compared to the intellect and programming/designing skills at Microsoft, they didn't have a chance.
Remember, Microsoft puts money into actively researching this stuff. Guys who tap away at in their basements on an evening just can't compete.
- How do you upgrade the kernel without a reboot?

Aye man. Innit.
The irony of it all kinda tickles me.

I think he may have been joking.
Ahh, I haven't heard that song for ages. Can someone provide me with a link to a 'backup copy' please? Thx.

Why do you not post your poo diary any more? Are you constipated?
I used to enjoy reading of your frequent toilet bowl experiences.

Thanks for your explanation. I got a bit confused, as the story wasn't praising Linux or bashing Microsoft. Not really news for nerds eh?
Could someone explain to me what the hell this article is about? It's just words, man!

Hey, I'm in your freaks list. Thanks, I didn't realise I was trolling.
Spielberg is on crack? It figures.
Maybe it stands for Windows Update, were you running that at the time?
Just subscribe to mailing lists like bugtraq and the lists at securityfocus, that will give you everything you need.
