  1. An actual answer to the question! on Ask Slashdot: An Open Source PC Music Studio? · · Score: 3, Informative

    Long standing member of the Linux audio community here, with almost 20 years experience of recording under all 3 major platforms.

    Please end the Mac fanboism and answer this poor guys question!

    He's asking about LINUX BASED notation software and synths! I'm sure he's well aware of Macs, REAPER and ProTools etc - not that they do what he's after anyway!

    Musescore and Rosegarden have already been mentioned for Linux notation software but there is also http://laborejo.org/ , http://denemo.org/ and http://www.frescobaldi.org/ . Laborejo seems to be the most popular in the Linux world these days. I'm not sure which is the best as I don't do notation very often and I've not tried them all. The last few are basically lilypond GUIs.

    As for synths, the best (and most powerful) commercial synths for Linux is Loomer's Aspect. Its unbelievably CPU efficient too. As for open source, there is TAL Noizemaker (my fave), zynaddsubfx/Yoshimi, Amsynth and Triceratops are all worth checking out.

    Another good free synth (but not open source yet) for Linux is Tunefish - thats my 3rd fave after Noizemaker and Aspect.

    The best Linux Audio distros are KXStudio and AVLinux. As for DAWs (which he wasn't asking about, but just for my 2p) Ardour has lots of fans and many people use REAPER under Linux as its officially supported running under wine but my fave Linux DAW is qtractor. Its the fastest and most lightweight modern DAW. It lacks some whizz bang features of the popular commercial DAWs but you may find it does everything you need it to.

  2. Todd Rundgren on The Truth About Hiring "Rock Star" Developers · · Score: 1

    If I think 'Rockstar devs' Todd is the first person who comes to mind. Todd designed the first commercial graphics tablet and had it released by Apple, was an early (and flagship) user of the Video Toaster and released arguably the first interactive album which he helped code for Phillips CDi.

    Do we have any other notable examples of people successful as both devs and rock stars? There have to be more than just Todd.

  4. FreeIPA v1 not an option - no policy support :( on Best FOSS Active Directory Alternative? · · Score: 1

    I was just about to download FreeIPA and try it under VirtualBox but had the good sense to read the FAQ first where it states:

      IPA Policy

          1.

                        Q: Can I specify different policies for different groups?
                        A: No. The current release of IPA supports one policy for all.

            The PRD for v2 does not explicitly list this requirement. There is, however, some requirement to improve password policies but not to that scope. This will be added to a future feature set. /end quote

    Hence it seems FOSS advocates are waiting for IPA v2 or samba 4.x until they have a good chance of really booting MS and proprietary solutions out of the server room at least.

  6. Thanks for the feedback! on Best FOSS Active Directory Alternative? · · Score: 3, Informative

    Thanks to everyone who has posted ideas, suggestions and comments so far- I've just finished reading them all now- much appreciated and very interesting stuff.

    A few points that I should've mentioned in the original question are that (as most of you correctly assumed being a UK school) nearly all clients are Win XP SP3 with the odd exceptions of a few Vista, Linux and OSX machines. I say migrating to one server but of course that would have a back-up machine- its just that at the moment we have this crazy configuration of two physically separate networks/domains with their own DCs, switches, ISPs etc- one for students one for staff. I inherited one helluva crazy mess, indeed! What I mean is that all this is going to be amalgamated into one physical network and one domain, not one server.

    We don't use Exchange so AD/Exchange inter-op isn't a requirement or an issue.

    I was aware of eDirectory but didn't mention that in the question because its not FOSS- however this has been recommended much more than Sun's solutions and Apache hasn't even had a look in. I don't want to rule Novell out as a possibility as it may just be better a better long term solution than sticking with AD/2003. It would seem FDS/FreeIPA is the only serious FOSS solution available for this right now

    Of course, AD *should* logically be the easiest one to stick with/ 'migrate' to but that doesn't necessarily make it the best choice. I think we'd be more than willing to hire a consultant to help transitions to an alternative if there were numerous long term benefits.

    I'm going to have a play with FreeIPA on a small network of test machines or under VirtualBox and see how that goes first I think.

  9. winff, devede and KDEnlive/QT4 on Which Open Source Video Apps Use SMP Effectively? · · Score: 1

    There are two main apps FOSS video converters need to be aware of:

    winff - great gui for FFMPEG, makes batch conversion simple. Soon to appear in Debian/Ubuntu repos. vlc also includes a more basic video conversion wizard gui, but can't compete with winff. win and lin versions available.

    DeVeDe- Already mentioned here I see. Makes DVD and SVCD/VCD/*CD creation under linux simple. Again, another cross platform FOSS app.

    Both these apps have SMP support, but only as good as their respective ffmpeg and mencoder backends.

    The new QT4 version of KDEnlive is a total re-write of the app and is said to be SMP friendly but has yet to have a proper release.

    Like most everyone in this thread, I agree this list is null and void because there is not even a mention of the most important computer ever, the C64.

    Its so sad that the Zaurus c3x00 models have never been released outside Japan because this is the best 'PC' yet. I'm very lucky indeed to have one in the UK.The Zaurus was the first PDA to have a VGA screen, internal hard disc and USB host was a first too I think. Other PDA's are toys in comparison. I can run Firefox, amule, mplayer, gaim, MAME, zpsx (a Zaurus Playstation emulator), apache, gnumeric, abiword... try doing all that on your WinCE'y toy! It is the new benchmark to beat for portable (future) computing. The cxxxx Zaurii are the coolest computers since the Amiga!

    The list also forgot Sharp's Amiga killer, the x68000. It was as powerful as most arcades from the early/mid 90's with arcade perfect conversions of stuff like Super Street Fighter II. It wasn't until the 486 came out that PCs caught up with the power of this machine which came out in the mid 80's!

  13. Clamshell Zaurii on The Future of the PDA · · Score: 1

I struggle to think of something I could do on my desktop PC that I couldn't do on my c3000. In fact, the only tasks I would avoid doing on the Z are big compiles (not that I've ever needed to compile a program for my Z thanks to the package managers and a large selection of free software) and video conversion or any other heavy-duty graphics work. It plays divx and xvid great though and the clamshell Zaurii are my fave computer since the almighty Amiga.

    The only thing I've seen that can compete with the latest Zaurii is the HTC universal, but Linux (openembedded) is still some way off being stable, even useable, on the HTC and the hardware build quality/ feel is not as good as the Z so I'm not tempted to switch.

    Hopefully there will be a company out there that realises there is a market for a good power PDA, something like the HTC uni but with

    * ARM Cortex-A8 CPU, 1ghz

    * Intel 2700 graphics accelerator (or better) w/ VGA out

    * 128MB or more RAM

    * USB2 OTG

    * At least 8GB integrated microdrive (or 4GB flash drive maybe)

    * Openembedded linux as standard w/ GPE, Abiword, Gnumeric, minimo etc. pre-installed

    instead

    I'd buy 5! :p

  14. NO VIDEO TRANSCODING :( on Nero Burning for Linux · · Score: 1

    I was overjoyed to hear that Ahead have started supporting Linux, now we just need the big products from Adobe and Macromedia to be ported then 90% of non-gaming windows users could switch totally to Linux (the other 10% want Fruity Loops and Cool Edit!).

    I checked out the demo version of nerolinux today but I was disappointed with its lacking (compared to the Windows version) feature set- primarily in the area of video support.

    k3b does pretty much everything I want as far as burning is concerned and does it very well, so I was hoping nerolinux would enable me do that one thing that k3b doesn't yet- quickly and easily convert a divx/xvid/mpeg/quicktime or whatever to a video DVD or VCD. No such luck.

    If they include a fast video transcoder and maybe even a DVD or VCD menu editor in the next release (I just hope there will be a next release....) and PREFERABLY split it off from the Windows bundle into an individual product then I would gladly fork out for it.

    tRANSELEMENt are the new champions of the British underground. As a live act they play heavy, melodic and unusual punk- some people call it psychedelic punk but it's anything but retro sounding. On record they do almost everything from electronica to hip hop to mock- operas but mash everything up in their inimitable way. Their first studio album is released this month and it has already received many rave reviews from the British music press.

    You MUST download their 'Live in Lincoln' show from February of last year. It was professionally recorded and the sound quality is as good, if not better, than many commercial live albums. Many have claimed it to be one of THE must- have albums of 2002. There is a link to it on the tE MP3 page and you can also get it off Furthurnet.

    In addition to this they've also just released their latest album online in MP3 format and last year they released a complete VCD for free too! At the moment the VCD is not available for download anywhere but if anyone out there has got some spare server space going then drop the band a line.
