Do you know why Linux seems to do so much better on VM NIC performance?
Honestly curious, not trying to troll. In my ESXi tests I can manage more than double the throughput on a Linux VM compared to a BSD VM. Is there just crappy paravirtual NIC support in BSD?
Tests were done with IPFIre and pfSense on two different ESXi boxes, and going to virtual client/server on etiher end of the router to avoid gigabit wire speed limits. On my slower box, i got 6xxMB/s with pfsense and 2.xxGB/s with IPFire. Minimal speed difference in either OS when using vmnet3 vs e1000. e1000 offered minimal throughput increase, vmxnet3 offered minimal host CPU usage decrease.
Why make your point with an attack on Slashdotters? What value did that add?
Also what makes you so informed in the details of this situation that you can say he's being made an example of fairly? From the information on the web, this infantile woman can't get along with anybody in the workplace, and cried wolf. What about the investigation which basially came up with nothing? What about all the details in her story that were left out and revealed elsewhere?
Before you hop on the fact that the founder resigned, picture yourself in his very situation. Now imagine you're not guilty and being attacked by some woman and her public faux-feminist bullshit. In this same situation, guilty or not, would you stick around and potentially do more harm than good to the company you founded?
Invalid claim. A realtor doesn't buy a house for $500K then mark it up 2%, they net 2% on the transaction. That 2% is their revenue, before expenses not after.
All the Mint talk in here reminds me of a funny comment in a slashdot article from a while back, forget where or who, but I saved it:
Is anyone aware of similar issues with Mint?
Yes. It converts you into a mindless drone who must recommend Mint in every turn when Ubuntu is mentioned.
Side effects include chanting the line "I switched to Mint and have never looked back."
I agree, there couldn't be anything easier to migrate to Linux-wise than Deb (or deriv.) + LXDE. Lubuntu would fit the bill perfectly there.
There's also Crunchbang with just OpenBox which I happily run for my personal desktops, but I fear the lack of any sort of start button puts us back into the Windows 8.0 fiasco at the hands of a fresh Microsoft refugee.
Absolutely the case. I just find it entertaining that everyone gets so caught up in the how we make our software free that they forget it's still open source either way. Let the dev choose how they want others to use their code and don't worry about it. Do we have to have one license without the other? Can't they coexist peacefully?
I fear companies may begin to stop sharing if you remove the precedent. I'm not saying there's no use for bsd style licenses, but there's room for both.
Where RMS is wrong is that any bsd code enhancements can be brought into the gpl project but not the other way around. I don't see how this is a loss for him...
...and you just brought it back to my point. They didn't need to go through this exercise to prove the point, the fact that numbers can lie isn't news. Thanks for taking it so seriously, I recommend you lighten up.
Although I'm glad they made this as it was a well-thought funny read, even if it did come from Facebook.
You likely haven't done a reinstall in a long time if you honestly believe it's just as easy to remove the crapware. Not only would a reinstall involve less clicking and fiddling, it would take far less time and result in a cleaner system. I suggest you try it again sometime, you may surprise yourself.
I think people misunderstand the way Linux/Windows handle memory. It seems like people have a hard time grasping that these OSes will cache data in "free" memory and not report it as free. This does not make 7 (for example) a memory hog over XP, it just makes better use of all available RAM.
That being said VMs (among other things) consume lots of RAM, so there are cases where more than 4-8GB may be necessary for a workstation/gaming PC.
WinAmp's "Smart View", which is likely what you're using to generate playlists from ratings is the single best feature I can think of.
It lets me use ratings in my mp3s, along with checks for genre, year, etc. to generate very custom playlists. Coupled with Shoutcast you've basically got an automated radio station. Personally I forgo the shoutcast typically, but love the smart views + shuffle for taking control of my listening away from myself (I hate it when I ruin a good song for myself through over-listening).
Making playlists from a Smart View makes for an easy way to pick out good music for your portable devices if they don't have the storage for your entire collection. It's nice to have full albums, but I find they aren't necessary on your portables.

Digital Ocean sells VPSes starting at $5/mo...
That's not a huge step up from $3.50 and is infinitely more useful.
You do realize that Red Hat 6.2 was released in April of 2000? I presume he is not talking about the more modern RHEL.

But according to a presentation at this week's annual UNISEX conference
It was basically made for the new firefox (it's been out for a bit, but practically made to undo australis)
This. Microsoft is not the anti-open source monster people on Slashdot like to make it out to be.
.NET, TypeScript, ASP.NET MVC, NTVS, PTVS, etc.
Old mentalities die hard I guess...

4th time it's happened and you haven't figured out what you did to cause it? PEBCAK...
Agreed... and this looks like a sloppy gitlab copycat at that. Curious to see how it evolves, however.
For now I'll stick with my private gitlab server, thanks.
This! We will never learn the full story.
I wonder if the screenshot from "Secret" has any credence? It would seem to backup this theory, but is too small of a sample.

you can go hunter2 my hunter2-ing hunter2
This, a thousand times, this! You couldn't separate the ideologies behind the two licenses any better than that.

How long until the battle of GPL vs BSD?
*Grabs popcorn*

To be fair the Facebook rebuttal has a hilarious tone to it, and Princeton started it...
You can make numbers look however you like in a study, who knew?
Ummm, I use teamviewer to get into home PCs from work all the time, while no one is home. Have you ever used TeamViewer?
