>>Are you seriously suggesting that a person can judge speed 35000 ft over the ocean, at night in a storm by looking out the window?
Well, I might not know if it can be done in airplane, but I have a decent speed feeling when I'm driving, given I have multiple frames of reference. But I would think pilot's would have the same skills also.
>>what kind of quality level could the average researcher achieve
I find that sort of thinking revolting. Basic R&D, if done in at home, or in a lab, will always produce something, sometimes good - sometimes bad. But it's the guy trying to make something new or better that keeps the world moving forward. I know of 1 high heat ceramic that was invented in a basement after another guy said " pour a beer into it and see what happens ". that ceramic mix was sold off to some company for a ton of cash ( back in 1984 ).
Here, let me share something for those back yard R&D people. Take a pack of chesterfield kings, 1 - 2 litre soda bottle, and some dish-washing soap ( a squirt ). add cig's + water almost to top + the squirt, let sit in the sun for 30 days: filter then spray on lawn, roses and ( when I lived up north ) trees that every year would get gypsy moths... no more bug's on the lawn, works in veggie gardens, trees free of moths too.
I know why it works, but I would love to see it improved.
yes, it's true, it's a trade surplus, and the movie business in California is the only industry exceeding 20 year of consistent trade surplus on the products they produce ( movies )
also, it's the 6th or 7th largest employer in the USA as an industry, there is a ton of people utilized in making a movie and you would be surprised how big it really is.
>>The cartels sued four mostly political figures who had no money to defend themselves, and won despite a theatrics worthy of My Cousin Vinnie
Problem is, that one the ball starts in the direction, it takes some greater effort to move it off it's course, besides that, these 4 people now will loose 1 year of there life in jail.
As for google, like any big firm, they will think it out, and if at risk, they will attack to the best of their ability. Who knows maybe they will go down in the style of standard oil.
I really liked the thought on some new harbours and canals, but due to the radioactivity it's not viable yet.
Likewise, I could imagine making a few lakes out in the mid west or along the Mississippi river to catch some of the flooding ( and some huge bass ponds )
>>You do need a certain amount of length to keep the twist from messing up
Now that I understand the concept, the twist is easy to manage, by keeping the twist in a certain segment of the entire loop of the belt, you can avoid the belt from moving the twist ( avoid it fro moving forward or backwards )
I'm not to an engineer, but to keep the belt in place I would have roller guilds over a length ( think tiny rolling pins ), each guild slightly offset in the clockwise ( or counter clockwise ) direction until the twist was done.
Thanks to everyone that explained this stuff to me.
I am having a hard time picturing a 1 sided molecule. I would guess I can picture 2 sides ( top / bottom ) but 1 side? way more advanced than I can currently think, can someone offer an example.
if your old enough to remmember, the rules of sense ( common or not ) was always to pull up next to the driveway, get out of your car, wave, say hello and walk slowly asking for direction.
given that's what I still do, I don't go into anyone's driveway unless I am turning around.
pulling into someones driveway is a sure sign that you might not have some manners and are to be dealt with as such.
give you another way to look at it: if you ever fish for trout on streams that cut into peoples back yards and real hard to get to , you know that you need to get the ok to walk on their land otherwise you might end up wading 1 or 2 miles to that special place( no choice on that, there is no high water line space to walk). traditional way to handle that is to show up about end of summer and say hello ( better yet get a friend to introduce you ), then you have a drink with them, talk about everything, and let your friend bring up the ok to pass their yard ( maybe even park in their drive way ). getting that ok, you start writing writing letters to them so that they don't forget you. and on opening day, you bring a huge basket of thanks ( 2 or 3 loaves of bread, some jams, cheese and other goodies ) and on the way back after fishing you give some of your catch up as a thank you.
Over time this becomes a tradition, which includes happy holiday calls, invites to your beach house, thanksgiving goodies and other things.
I had this type of relationship with 2 people on a fantastic trout stream in NJ and with a lovely older lady on the south shore of Long Island for striper fishing. I passed the tradition on to another fisherman that would keep it going and to this day I still send out cards and invites to Florida.
>> A violent response to trespassing is uncalled for.
I live in Florida currently, the guy up the block ( nice guy too ), has a MOTE ( It's called it a mighty huge drainage canal legally but this thing is far wider than the rest of them), 6 ft. fence on his side of the mote, a regular hedge with a railing on the public side of the mote, and a draw-bridge.
He does not like strangers and I would not visit him at night due to the fear of getting shot. trespass sign's are everywhere. Nice guy but his response if you made it on to his property would be a gun.
in the above case, that guy just wants to be left alone, he built his walls, and does not want to be bothered, you show up in his backyard, you are most likely doing something wrong
yes, I recall that the queen of England one had a trespasser in her house, but they could only remove him from the home and not file trespassing charges.
don't forget, The USA had to deal with having to house the British during a war to gain the independent. it's manifested itself within the trespass laws.
I myself have a no trespass sign on my walkway, and a gate. The gate is rigged so that when you open it at night a dog starts barking . I think it's funny, but if it keeps barking or my porch alarm hits I get my gun.
I have a thing about those holy joe's that come around my house, it's call the bad sprinkler system, works wonders. nothing better than on a Saturday morning (cold day) activating it when they are knocking on the door. I really need to set up a video cam.
>>Off the top of my head: beaches are the only thing, in the USA, I can think of that are always public and you can always cross private land to reach.
Nope, not true, In NJ unless it has become a common access point ( has been open to the public and in use for 1 year or longer), you can shut your entrance to the beach. I know this to be valid in Point Pleasant, Long Beach Island, Deal, and Mantoloking. http://www.app.com/article/20081220/NEWS/81220018
currently in California, some people have refused to let people access to the beach via their property, Why? insurance liability. so until the state gives a blanket coverage for the issue, people are welding their gates. - sorry could not find the link for that

Yes and no. I am guessing that by the time people can self generate and give back to the community, the power companies will charge a line fee ( think water & sewer tax ).
the water injector sits below you carb and above the intake. you first match and port the intake manifold entry into the cylinders, then you clean up the interior bottom of the intake manifold ( the main entry for the gas ) and smooth it out so there are no sharp edges. then match the spacer plate to the intake. water injector on top of the spacer plate Carb on last.
my pal and myself have tried a lot of different things to improve our gas usage.
any you are correct, knowledge of the product installed changes your driving behavior.
I was tested with a few blind studies and only 1 product seemed to help the others were found to be snake oil. and the one product that did help, we learned that we could port and polish the intake manifold to reproduce the improvement.
Blind studies were my friend would install or not install without telling me and I would do the same to him. and we would drive for a month.
so yep, it seems to be mostly snake oil. Which I was hoping it would not be.
one product that we were very happy with was a water injector, that did help, just a little bit, it installed right under the carburetor, kept the motor slightly cooler and the mileage improved by 1 to 2 miles per gallon.
another product that we learned from was the simple spacer plate of 1/2 inch this improved our performance on passing cars and did not improve ( or reduce ) our gas millage.
polishing and porting the intake manifold gave us about 2 miles to the gallon increase.
I don't know if these improvements would help anybody with a modern car, we tested this with a 1968 GTO and my 1970 Chevelle.
