As far as I know, Apple isn't going around fucking with anyone. They make their hardware, they make their software, and they throw out some marketing about thinking different, or whatever the current slogan is. Apple did sue a couple of companies that tried ripping off the Imac, but I can see why. Their legal department is a bit feisty when it comes to copyright stuff, but wouldn't you be to if you were fighting tooth and nail for 7% share or so? At least they're not out breaking laws and agreements, and planning on subscription licences and .APPLENET.

    Just my viewpoint.

They tell you what is coming down the pipe, to a point. I have a good friend who let's me know about some key developments at Apple that will be showing up shortly; the other side is, they announce their stuff "just in time" (with some misses, of course). I've watched Dell, etc., promise 3GHz machines in just 2 months (yes, exaggerating.) But you get the point.

And no, no one ever buys a G3 500MHz the day before it is obsolete, Apple always puts price cuts, promotions, special deals, etc., into the works a month AT A MINIMUM, and usually 2 months, before that model is discontinued. This is why Apple's sales always fall off before every major event.

I agree with you on the warranty program.

To close, read Mac OS Rumors (mosr.com) and As The Apple Turns (appleturns.com), and you can get a 90% clue as to what is coming up in the next "big event". Over the past 2 years, they have had about a 90% success rate. This will give you a basic, if not official, idea of upcoming events for Apple.

Every 10th Word file fails. This is good? Industry servers are designed for 5 9s (99.999% uptime), yet we can accept a 10% fail rate for our processors?

Also, the P4 needs a temperature shutdown?!?!?! Makes one think that even if Motoralla's Apple chips are lagging in MHz, at least they won't burn down your house!

In the academic world, you sleep with a student, you're fired.) In Congress, you sleep with a pony, you get a pay raise! (Obvious exageration). My problem is that government officials are not held to the same standard that regular business people are, and therefore we need a law to make them conform to society's norms.

The scientists want the articles to be kept free and open electronically. If they mean kept on the web by the publishing journal, then I disagree. The journal should not have to foot that bill if they do not want to. Now, if they mean that some site should be allowed to post the articles for free access by the public, I'm all for it.

I'll assume they mean the latter. Overall, this is a disturbing trend in science. In the past science tended to prove theories, practice on applied science, etc. Engineers tended to find practical applications, which then would be patented. Now we have humans gene sequences being patented. What's next, patenting lab coats? (Ok, a bit extreme, but you get the point)

As a capitalist kinda guy, I don't mind a company leveraging their strengths. As a tech guy, I dislike how MS has forced various stuff down consumers' throats.

What I really, really HATE, though, is the complete buy-in of corporate IT/IS drones into MS. As a co-worker likes to tell me, MS was good at one point to solidify standards (back in the '80s). But we have progressed now to the point where we have standards bodies who can give us standards. For example, MS XP will be the first MS OS with an OSI standard TCP/IP stack? This took how many years? Also, all these corporate wankers deciding that MS is the best route? Come on, has there been a study where the MS OS route has resulted in a lower cost for support. Not that I've seen.

Overall, I don't really blame MS, I (now) blame all the lemmings who follow "the group" when it comes to anything relating to computers.
