  1. Ridiculous on Deciphering Windows Product Activation · · Score: 3

After reading the article, which half the time lost me, all I can say is "damn, those guys know their shit" and "how many different levels of encryption and checking does MS need to do?"

Really, checking the amount of RAM in a system? Of course, no one EVER adds RAM, right?

MS has perfected the art of "incremental monopoly." Each step is not too bad, and after 10 steps, you are used to the last 3 steps, so it still seems ok. Eventually, you have .Net and subscription based systems, with all data handled by MS, and suddenly you realize your are totally fucked, but it is a bit too late.

I actually had to justify buying a $30 Linux CD (sorry, forget what flavor right now) to install an IDS when there was some other company (that the money person knew) that made a similar product for about $8000. And we have military-grade people testing IDSs!!!! AHHHHH! The Pain!

Consulting in general is different from your average job, and tech consulting can be just totally confusing at times. And that's just trying to figure out what your client really wants!

Seriously, consulting is tough but can be a lot of fun when done correctly. If this book is as good as the review says it is, which I will have to trust until I look at it, then I would have to recommend new consultants to read it. I have met too many wannabes who had no idea what they were getting into- as you can guess they no longer work here.

I don't know if you saw any of the Crusade episodes, but if you followed that travesty, you will never watch TNT/TBS again.

All I have to say is give this show a chance, mainly because of Stryzinski (spelling way wrong). He does have a vision and an arc. It may go stale, but from I've read of his remarks, he is still going into (somewhat) fresh territory (I say "somewhat" because no matter what he does, there will be people who will find parallels with something done in the past- mainly because they will compare new stuff to 1 of 6 broad categories).

Sure, books tend to be "harder" sci-fi, but Bab5 gives a great showing for a 1 hour serial show. As Steven King and Michael Chriton show, a good book takes 6-8 hours of movie time to give a somewhat good representation of the book.

  13. More meaningless numbers on Can SSE-2 Save the Pentium 4? · · Score: 4

In this test A beats B, but in this test B beats A, etc. etc. All these different tests try to measure some specific performance parameter, but as hard as you try to standardize the rest of the equipment to isolate that one parameter, you just can't in the real world. And that is the true test- how well does the entire system run? You could slap a P4 3GHz onto a 33MHz bus (well, not really, but you get the point) and get the equivalent performance of a 3-toed sloth. That or the bus wires will glow.

As for the SSE extensions, Intel tried this first back with MMX, and Apple is trying it now with AltiVec(sp?). Yes these extension can help, but only after software is optimized for them. It not a case of "drop 'em in and watch out!" It takes time to develop.

Of course, all of this is just marketing. Kinda like the MHz wars. Intel needs some positive press after that oft quoted test where the P3 trounced the P4.
