I think blair is saying that they don't have to release every darn thing they get. Things like "Next Thursday we're sending troops into Boogerstantown at 4 AM." Release it next Friday after Boogerstantown gets clobbered. Just check the stuff first to see if it can get people (or more people) hurt by releasing it.
Yup. It's fun watching the atheists condemn those who profess a belief in a religion go totally over the top in professing that "they are idiots" and we are the "smart ones." I gave up about 3 years ago when, in an on-topic post, I said that I believed in God. That was it, I just said "Yes, I believe in God." And I got slammed by at least a dozen people belittling me for my "creationism myths," "church slavery," etc etc. I wasn't try to push any of my beliefs on anyone. Seriously, why does anyone care what I believe?
So a guy has some experience, someone from years ago has a missing router, and we jump to "Aha! He stole a router and killed his wife." TFA doesn't say if there is any other evidence. A witness (who did tell different stories) said she saw the wife at the supposed time the husband was murdering the wife. They better have some better evidence than conjecture, because I don't want to get blamed for some crime just because I have an engineering degree and some guy I used to know stole a router and then covered it up by saying I stole it. Where is CSI when you need them? They can do magicky stuff!
I'm glad you caught my sarcasm. I was barricading myself for "HOW DARE YOU" type responses. Barometer- good for seeing if a storm is blowing in. Magno- well, got me there. Thermo- who doesn't like to know the temp?
I really have no idea what your response has to do with my post. All I was saying is that the argument has been one company vs. a platform. But since I'm here, iPods out shadowed the mobile music player scene at first. And still does, at least in mindshare. I guess that 'saturation' is just around the corner? No, I don't own an iPod or iPad. Or maybe you just responded to the wrong post. Though I doubt it with your ill-thought out arguments that have been presented several times on/. and generally just got laughed at. I will refrain from laughing.
First, this is one of the few times I am happy some has been killed. He deserved it. 2nd, I was at the Phillies game where everyone did the "U-S-A" chant. Very powerful moment. I'll never forget it. 3rd, screw politics. Bad guy is dead. Fin.
This is a good point. The argument has been 'Apple vs. Android.' Well, Apple is one company, Android consists of how many? So compare Apple vs. other manufacturers, or compare iOS vs. Android. Since Android is free, I'd give iOS a win. I have no idea of Apple vs. other manufacturers, but I'm guessing that on a company-to-company showdown, Apple wins.
Let's reframe the argument. Apple computer sales vs. installed Linux computer sales. No, not the same, but there is the analogy.
And no, Android tablets' (when they finally exist) main competitor IS the iPad. Apple's selling a million every goddamn month.
And McDonalds sell that many hamburgers every hour. Your point is what?
I don't think people eat their tablets. Meaning, each iPad sold is one less sold to some other tablet for about a year. I'd insert some "ass" comment here, but that would just be silly.
"Sensors: Why on earth I would ever want a barometer or magnetometer in a tablet is beyond me, unless you're doing scientific research."
My God man! How can you ever live without know the gravity and air pressure AT ALL TIMES! You HEATHEN! Yeah, I can't believe someone actually put that as an advantage. Maybe they could put in a thermometer and one of those ghost-hunting EMF detectors in next! "Look my Android tablet is telling me we have a pocket of iron, the pressure is rising, the temp is rising, and EMF is rising! Oh crap, we just fell into a volcano..."
In the article (yeah, I really read his part) Woz's says that projects can take up to years. He never expounded on how these long-term projects should take, or at what level he would like to implement them. From kindergarten to 5th project. 6th-9th? 10th-12th? K all the way through 12th? I like his premise, but then he goes off and says he developed the floppy disk for Apple in 2 weeks. Is that long term? Woz is a really smart guy and has done tons of good, but bring some clarity when you are declaring the need for changes. I personally agree with him that a, say, semester long (2 to 4 months) project should be able to teach a lot more than the memorize, test, & forget form of study. Longer than that and you are most likely getting into implementation phases.
I see this as two different things. Apple's clear intent is to lock down their phones so that no one can do anything they want on the phone that isn't specifically approved by the Apple overlords. Google is trying to get past the current issue of every OEM shipping a much modified 'version' of the OS causing incompatibility issues and fragmenting the market doing harm to the viral spreadability of the platform.
Respectfully, those don't seem very different to me. Yes, I do see the slight differences, but the practical effect is mostly the same. Apple locks down to keep a unified platform (the experience), Google is now realizing that letting everything going viral may be a problem (such as Windows + various OEMs), and so wants some lockdown (the experience).
Yes, very good idea! I completely forgot about that base after watching a show about it. Because, who knows what we will be able to do with DNA in the future? I like your thinking.
As far as we know, the universe is open-ended, so heat death is the ultimate result. Now, we could question the open-end conclusion. With questions about the true nature of the universe and it's gravatic balance.
I hate to say this, but for species that have no chance of being saved, I can't justify the costs. Personally, I'd like to try and save all species for the biodiversity, but if there truly are species that just can't last... sorry. If they can be saved, but it costs a lot, save them. This is facetious, but remember Star Trek 4? Never know when the ding-wing 5-toed sloth-bat may be important in the future.
If this goes through, and even worse goes international, what a mess this will cause. Staff needing to peruse all new links? Massive revamping of crawler routines? Gah.
What?! Be sensible and rational! Surely you jest and a troll of the anti-materialists/religious/platypus party!
Or Make them watch Law & Order, CSI, Criminal Minds, etc. Bad guys lose, good guys win. Yeah, it's stupid TV, but it looks like it's a better moral compass than a lot of parents now a days.
Er, nice rant at me. The article was about Google tightening control over their platform. I never said "locking down." I never said they would lock it down. Obviously, I hit quite the nerve with you. I thank you for calling me stupid; now I have an excuse for my wife when I do something wrong.
"Its always been pretty obvious to anyone who wants to read between Google's lines that once 3.x and 2.x are merged again, the result will be made public." Know something we don't, Carnac?
By the way, did you even read the article? Or just forgot to drink your coffee today or somesuch? I'd be annoyed if I wasn't laughing so hard right now.
"I'm not an Apple fanboy by any means (I've never owned a Mac/iPod/iWhatever), but I don't associate the word "junk" with Apple products."
To be fair, as long as you don't consider their 1st gen products. They've always had problems with those. On the flip side, it's probably because Apple keeps pushing the envelope on their stuff. On the 3rd side, at least someone is pushing the envelope.
"It's my belief that this is the crucial difference in marketing, and the reason why Apple infuriates so many geeks: they refuse to cater to the small "gearhead" market with their devices, and instead focus on showing the much larger segment that doesn't understand all the jargony terms"
That may be the best description of/. that I've ever read. I used to be a "gearhead" and agreed, but then I got into other elements of business (management, marketing, sales, PR) and discovered that most of the world is not populated by "gearheads."
Disclaimer- I own a Macbook Pro. I also own 4 Windows systems.
The question to ask is "Why are Apple fans so 'cultist' for their systems/devices?" I've heard several arguments to as why, but none that really make any sense. Macs/iPhones/etc are nice packages, but they don't make me breakfast. Marketing is important, but I don't see people raving about Geico (love their commercials). Fashionable is an idea, but that often has backlash- "You paid $1000 for shoes!" Yes, OS X is (IMHO) easy to deal with than Windows & *nix, but that is a wide variable between people.
I think blair is saying that they don't have to release every darn thing they get. Things like "Next Thursday we're sending troops into Boogerstantown at 4 AM." My 2 bananas worth.

Well, as a client, you just wouldn't buy it, now would you?
Though I do see your point in the snickering, now. Sorry about that, I thought you were coming from a business perspective. I apologize.
And what is 'angry birds?'
Er, nice rant at me. The article was about Google tightening control over their platform. I never said "locking down." I never said they would lock it down. Obviously, I hit quite the nerve with you. I thank you for calling me stupid; now I have an excuse for my wife when I do something wrong.
