Now I see why IT is a dead industry. If only I would have had such insight when I was choosing my studies at the University. Then again, I probably would have been smart and started working right out of high school. (WANTED: Applications Programmer. 3+ years experience required.)
At least I have my vast knowledge of liberal arts to keep me warm at night and my degree in case I run out of toilet paper.
> The terraflop statistic is a little hard for me to swallow.
Perhaps they were trying to compare them to such things like the LS-120 drive, which was a flop, or Windows Millenium, which was a megaflop. They weren't referring to processing power.
> I have an email address that I've never given out, and 90% of the messages I receive are spam.
Do you mean "never given out" except to family and friends? I only give my primary account to family and friends, and I still receive hella-spam.
I have a feeling I get added to lists when unsuspecting friends send me e-cards or click those "E-mail this article to a friend" links. I tell them never to enter my e-mail address into a web page, but they forget since it is seemingly harmless to them (and they trust "the Internet" for some reason).
> Still, there is promised security of the MS passport system etc.
How do the Hotmail spammers get my e-mail address? Do they get it from a public directory? When I first signed up for a passport account (so I could use Messenger), I would get an alert every 10 minutes from the damn thing about a new incoming message even though I never used the e-mail address for anything (just Messenger). Where did they get my e-mail address from?
I had the notion that someone might have used the e-mail address before me and used it for a junk account, however, my username is quite obscure. I suppose that doesn't matter on Hotmail, though, since pretty much every combination is used.
Still, I feel that Hotmail has something to do with the sheer amount of spam I receive in a mailbox I have never given out or used. I eventually switched to a Yahoo/Passport combination just so the damn thing doesn't alert me of incoming mail. I know you can turn it off, but at a University where the machines are reloaded every night it's irritating.
Who is your provider? I thought LG was using Charter, and there's NO way you're pushing that kind of bandwidth through Charter Buttpipe (err, Pipeline). You must be using Time Warner? My parents have a TW cable modem, and it spanks us Charter customers.
How about a cheap hub and an obviously active drop, provided you could still find a place to hide it. Who says it needs to be the only computer on the port?
> and while Windows 2000 is better it is still not as stable.
Perhaps not as stable, but production-quality stable.
>There is a lot that cmd.exe doesn't do
You're right, but back when I was a DOS junky I didn't seem to mind and/or I found third-party utilities that made me happy.
> and alt-tab sucks, pasting between windows sucks
Although you're entitled to your opinion, I don't see a problem in offer Alt-Tab as an option. I think most would find it handy. Why does cutting and pasting suck? Do you retype everything?
I understand your argument about Windows missing some essential utilities. SSH client/server should at least be there for sure.
Crappy Windows 2000 still requires me to load my RAID driver from floppy when I load my OS. It is the ONLY thing I use my floppy for anymore. I wanted to get rid of it, but Microsoft seems to be living in the past.
> MS OS have problems because of stability, crappy command line, crappy windows system(unless u only run 1 maybe 2 programs at a time), lack of utilities installed, etc.
Lack os stability? Upgrade to Windows 2000 or higher and live in the now.
Crappy command line? What doesn't it do that you need?
1 or 2 programs at a time? I run lots of apps at a time and I have perfect stability, and the Alt-Tab or clicking on the icon on the bottom is pretty simple to manage.
Lack of utilities installed? You must be a Mandrake user. Some of us like to install our own shit...
> Mac OS is for women, homosexuals, and people who buy hardware because it's "cute!"
Hmmm, regardless of the factualness of this statement (of which I largely agree), you're talking about a pretty large demographic. I'm sure Apple would love to get their hands on these people (as would any other OS vendor). After all, you're talking about well over 50% of the population.
> Now he's supporting a CPU scheme that, well, doesn't break anything and may even sacrifice performance for that compatibility.
You've clearly never used an AMD processor before. You won't have to worry about a lack of things 'breaking', and on those cold, winter days, it will keep the immediate area around your computer warm and toasty (until the CPU cooks itself).
If that still isn't enough, experiment with some of the toilet chipsets that come with AMD boards like VIA, ALi, and SiS.)
I would also recommend using anything other than an nVidia video card with your new AMD system. High levels of frustration are sure to please anyone who is looking for self-punishment.
> The reason you can't get a job is lack of experience.
Agreed, which is exactly what I said in my post.
I'd wager that about half that "experience" isn't "experience doing the job" but the ability to use the tools.
Also true. But HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO GET ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCE IF THEY WON'T HIRE ME?!
> And you don't have to compete with people getting free, on-the-job training -- be one of them getting the training!
Did you read any of my original posts?! The problem is that I CAN'T get a job, even ones I am perfectly qualified for (I just got 3 more rejections today). How the fuck am I supposed to get this training?
> businesses have no reason to provide training or other tool-exposure time
My original argument was about me trying to GET a job. What do I care about training when companies won't hire me based on a lack of experience?
Plus, if companies are training their employees, it only makes it more difficult for me to compete with them for a job. How can I compete with people getting free, on-the-job, paid training?!
Yes, we have no girlfriends because we enjoy messing with computers. But those people who choose a different hobby, like cars, skateboarding, or reading books have women waiting in line, right?
What does it matter what my hobby is? What matters is how you prioritize.
Guys with families mess with computers, but given a choice between paying for an anniversary gift and buying the latest phatness in computer gaming, most of them would choose the earlier.
Ok, I'm responding to a Troll, but I think this is the attitude of a lot of people here who aren't into everything posted here.
Hmmm, I thought my post was funny but I think your reply was even funnier. I laughed.
It was one of those days where I couldn't find anyone to bitch to, so I took it out on the fine people of Slashdot.
BONG!

Flamebait? I thought the parent was insightful, or funny at the very least.
Burn Karma Burn!

Interesting name for a German craft. Does it have blonde hair and blue eyes too?
Hallo Zicklein! Oben ankleiden wie hitler ist nicht kühl.
> What I want to know is why RR and other cable companies providing BB restrict bandwidth?!?
Because bandwidth costs them big bucks and they pay by the megabit.
Who is your provider? I thought LG was using Charter, and there's NO way you're pushing that kind of bandwidth through Charter Buttpipe (err, Pipeline). You must be using Time Warner? My parents have a TW cable modem, and it spanks us Charter customers.
Got any jobs in LG? :)
> yeah dude, unlike Canadia, people live in the US
Canadia? LOL, sometimes I feel ashamed to be a U.S. citizen. We can't even spell our flames right.
Must be nice - we're enjoying 500kbit cable for $50/month here in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Damn cows must be sitting on our optic cable.
Slashdot collects headlines from other news sites, attempts to filter out the uninteresting, and posts the goodies here for all to see.
There you go, Mr. DuMass.

A cheaper device for Atari aficionados...

From: Competitive Comparisons:
> [Windows 2000 offers] Better business alignment with straightforward licensing and clarity of intellectual property ownership.
So my choices are:
1) Pay big bucks and be sure of who 0wns me, or
2) pay nothing (aside from development costs) and not give a rats ass.
