Evolution does not dictate that an animal will always instinctively do what will extend its life. There are numerous examples of simple traps humans set where the animal could easily escape if it would give up the bait but they deliberately stay tapped. Animals introduced to new environments have been seen ingesting toxic plants. People obviously do many things that are harmful to their health.
Evolution says that nature will breed out traits that did not extend an animals life. Giving a dumbed down example, say a person was allergic to smoking, ad say this was passed down to his children. By not smoking him and his children would live longer lives thus giving them more opportunities to breed, and over thousands of years you might see an increase in people allergic to smoking because it naturally allowed people to live longer, it became an evolved trait.
Evolution does not work on this micro scale of every day decisions an animal decides to make. Animals to do have some psychic knowledge to be introduced to two new food and instantly know which has the optimal nutrition.
Are you serious? Have you not read about the numerous lawsuits brought against torrent users. I worked for a university where we received requests weekly to find who downloaded a file and delete it. Seriously that is just one link, a simple google search will show you just how much the government enforces what lobbying media companies tell them to.
Agreed, from the very beginning he showed his hand, he doesn't care about the students he cares about the system in place and keeping it running. Basically saying its not fair that the students who keep their gpa up get to go to a school with higher standards. Until the terrible public school system we have is reformed all students will have to suffer and get worse educations.
As so many have stated the current school system is so entangled in politics that any reform has become impossible. Its impossible to fire a bad teacher. And if a student is deliberately disrupting the classroom and keeping other students from learning they usually cant be expelled. While charter schools are wrapped up in their own business politics if it forces the children to reach a higher standard then I say its a good thing.
I love theoretical physics and all the crazy ET stories as much as the next guy. However, it can be taken to the point where no one cares. Seriously reading a story that basically said, a meteor crash had a 20% chance to send a large rock in to space, with a 10% chance that contained some bacterial form of life, that had a 5% chance of surviving the heat and extreme atmosphere changes going in to space, leading to a 1% chance it would then survive hundreds of years flying through a cold radiation filled vacuum, leading to the.00001% chance that it hit a moon that might be able to support some form of life.
And say this far fetched story actually happened, what is the amazing result that awaits us when we reach said moon!? An undetectable amount of frozen bacteria that went on a $h**ty space adventure and crashed in to a lifeless moon and died soon after.
If you are going to have a crazy unlikely story of how a ridiculous chain of events helped life travel through space, at least make up an interesting ending.
He obviously isn't asking the US to give him rights to build on the moon, he is asking the US to defend whatever he builds there. He has as much power as anyone else does to build a house or a hotel up there, but then, as other have stated, he will have to defend it from someone else deciding they now own it and taking it by force.
I also doubt his intentions are even that pure. I assume hes intelligent enough to know the US cant actually sell him any part of the moon, and that even if they did it would not be recognized by any other countries. Which would lead me to believe he sees it simply as an investment opportunity. He would the have a small assurance that the US government would defend his claim legally (even if he doesn't actually have anything on the moon), at least against other US companies. Then allowing him to make a profit off of it in one way or another.
I feel like this has been reported on 5 times by now. Yes we know they are raising money, please no more updates until the findings from the audit are in.
In the mean time is there any actual point to this? While TrueCrypt can be one of the best methods for a typical home user or even tech savy business person to encrypt that naughty folder. But it honestly isn't as widely used as they make it out to be. Most softwares or businesses use their own encryption. Not to mention the nature of TrueCrypt means its most often used to secure locals files or drives, meaning unless the NSA has direct control over your computer they really cant get at your stuff.
Also would this resolve anything? As soon as the audit is done people will either, question the findings for one reason or another. When in the end all the audit can say is if there is an intentional backdoor or if there is an obvious flaw in the code that would leave it vulnerable. Even if neither of these turn up there is still a very real chance the NSA found their own unintentional flaw in the code that allows them to greatly reduce the time required to decrypt the drive.
How does giving each section of the US its on rules on how to adjust for DLS make things simpler? Keep it or get rid of it, stop trying to make things more efficient, it just confuses people...
this kind of reaction suggests there's more to the story than I think anyone realizes.
That's what many governments are slowly realizing. Every time a new packet of documents is released the US government claims, "yes we did that, but that was the extent of what we did." Then a week later a new document is released showing they went even further.
Then outside governments are quick to point a finger and state how outraged they are, and days later documents leaked reveal they are guilty of the same practices. I think all the governments severely underestimated exactly how much information Snowden took with him. And this exposure has inspired a number of other individuals to dig even deeper.
The UK has been semi quiet during this whole ordeal, and this new action is an easy indication that they have a number of secrets that they are hoping Snowden didnt manage to collect. Even if they cant fully stop the release of the documents. Seizing a copy from the press will give them some insight in to what Snowden found out and give them a head start on damage control.
Why is this being treated like a stroke of genius? As stated Linux quickly failed at their implementation and Microsoft and has essentially been in a prolonged failure in trying to do the same.
Every attempt seems to garner the same reaction that people want their phone to be separate from their computer. True, automatically syncing files, apps, and chosen data, is extremely convenient. But phones and computers use very different interfaces and either one or both will suffer it they attempt to merge completely.
While a few somehow look at this as a stroke of genius I see it as Apple failing to learn from the mistakes of others.
Valve has seemed happy to not really put any money towards marketing up to this point, spread mostly by word of mouth in the gamer community. You can walk up to any console gamer and they can name any of the current gen consoles yet I can still find a few who have no idea what Steam is. Despite this Valve has still had no problem finding success because if you have built your own gaming computer they are best option for a game marketplace and have little competition in that arena on the PC.
However, consoles are all about the show, the exclusives, and the tv adds help. So far the new Steam OS seems to still be unheard of to many gamers, especially if you prefer consoles and don't log in to steam or slashdot daily. Valve has some competitors in this arena that are going to ready to compete. While I think Valve has the platform to shake up the industry they will have to make people aware of what they have to offer.
Depends on how many Steam library games will eventually work under their Linux OS. If a large portion of my library becomes playable, you bet I'll build or buy a steambox.
Valve had already expressed that they wished to develop more support for Linux. They had said Microsoft and Apple were both too eager to close off their OS's and Valve didn't know how long these companies products would remain viable platforms so they wanted to put some of their eggs in a more open basket, eventually hoping to have nearly all games playable on Linux.
Still there is a major difference. On the internet a photo of a naked child is either child pornography or it isn't. True there might be some question as to if the child in said picture is 18 or 16, but if an investigation is done and the child's age is determined it will either be legal or illegal no matter where it is found on the internet.
Piracy must be questioned every time the file is encountered on the internet. While one youtube video may use a song with approval so it is legal another video may use the exact same song file and it is considered piracy. It is unrealistic to check the legality of every single media file used on the internet.
The inability to easily play content outside of itunes or the short list of Apple approved apps kept it from ever really taking off.
While Apple is good at overcoming fragmentation in a given area of technology, bringing together the right functions in to one easy to use device. I believe their inability to play well with third party developers or to leave code open so others can develop technology that works with it, would keep a smart watch from becoming the new piece of technology it needs to be.
Apples product design seems to be the exact same device in multiple form factors. People do not need to wear a second phone on their wrists, instead I believe for it to really take off it will need to be a new device in itself that works in conjunction with your phone. Bringing alerts and easy responses to your wrist for convenience, as well as new features that have not taken off well on phones: NFC, wireless payments, location specific services. I would love if a friend could take a group picture and then tap their phone to my watch to send the pic to my phone, (similar tech to S-beam) but this requires standard communication across multiple devices, something Apple is absolutely terrible at.
