Budd: You're telling me she cut through eighty-eight bodyguards before she got to O-Ren? Bill: Nah, there weren't really eighty-eight of them. They just called themselves "The Crazy 88." Budd: How come? Bill: I don't know. I guess they thought it sounded cool.
Groklaw's stevem heard Tridge's speech today at the LCA 2005 conference, Australia's national Linux conference, and he has a report for us:
This was taken from my memory of Dr. Andrew Tridgell's keynote at this years LCA2005 Conference. Essentially Tridge did *NOT* do anything that anyone could ever possibly ever take as breaking a BitKeeper licence, as far as I can see. How was it done? He, like any good sysadmin would, first off telnetted to the BitKeeper port on a BitKeeper server.
$ telnet thunk.org 5000 WhooHoo! Connection! So, next obvious step that we *all* do is type in the obvious:
help Back came a list of commands to manipulate the BitKeeper server and ask things of it. Well, according to Tridge, a bit of reading of the LKML (Linux Kernel Email List) shows that the "clone" command is the way to checkout someones source code repository.
So Tridge's massive "reverse engineering" project came down to a single line of shell script:
$ echo clone | nc thunk.org 5000 > e2fsprogs.dat Hey presto, Tridge has just checked out from a BitKeeper repository into the file e2fsprogs.dat.
The audience was laughing and cheering Tridge on as he explained just what a Mountain had been made of this Molehill. And I mean made by both sides of the issue -- those who he said he was some Uber Reverse Engineering Wizard and those who claimed that he MUST have used a BK client.
Funny report, isn't it? Anyway, now you know Tridge's side of the story.
1) Network segregation Put your access point on a separate subnet, with a firewall separating the wireless and internal users
2) Change the default settings on your access point Default settings (SSID, administrator password, channel) are well known and even included as part of some WLAN attack tools
3) Use WPA with a strong key WPA is a definite improvement over WEP in providing wireless security. But the version intended for home and SOHO use--WPA-PSK--has a weakness shared by any passphrase security mechanism. The choice of simple, common and short passphrases may allow your WPA-protected WLAN to be quickly compromised via dictionary attack (more info here).
4) Update your firmware This is helpful if your AP or client doesn't currently support WPA. Many manufacturers have newer firmware for 802.11g products that add WPA support. You may also find this for 802.11b gear, but it's not as common. Check anyway!
5) Turn off the WLAN when not in use A $5 lamp timer from your local hardware store is a simple, but effective way to keep your WLAN or LAN from harm while you're sleeping.

I've had unreasonably high hopes for "Sin City" ever since I watched that fabulous trailer. But it's not like graphic novels-turned-movies have impeccable track records on the big screen, so imagine my concern going into this.
For lack of a more eloquent explanation, "Sin City" freaking rules.
Remember the first time you saw "Pulp Fiction"? You were unnerved and at times downright repelled, but you admitted that it was the freshest, most original thing to be put into a theater since... ever, and you couldn't wait to talk about how amazing it was with everyone you knew? "Sin City" is kind of like that.
1. Is "Sin City" a family movie? - Heavens no. It's incredibly graphic and gruesome. I know YOU'RE into that, but don't bring the kids.
6. Does the all-star cast detract from the story at all? - Refreshingly, no. No one character is the main star, it's more like a bunch of supporting roles. Great supporting roles. These actors are stoked.
8. Are we talking CG animation or live action? - Almost all the live action was done with green screens and props, then the magic was painted in later. It's amazing.
10. I was pleased to see lots of hot chicks in the trailer. Can I expect more of that? - You sure can, my friend! But they'll also chop your head off. Literally.
