I don't personally like kde, I never have. For me it's too bloated and slow(it takes forever to boot up) but on the other hand kde is making great strides in making Linux easier to use for the common desktop user, who by the way wouldn't notice how bloated and slow it is since they are comming from a windows workd;)
And by bloated and slow I mean compared to what I use, XFCE which is rock solid BTW. XFCE takes about 3 seconds to load from the commandline where as KDE takes anywhere from 15-20 seconds to load from the command line. Kmail is the same, it takes way to long to load for me, I just use netscape mail or Mozilla depending on what box I'm on.
Like I said KDE is great, but it's not for me.
Ya I submitted this story hours ago but apparently it wasan't news then when it got rejected right away. This happens all the time.
Sometimes Slashdot really bugs me.
Mod me down, whatever.
Wireless PC, whats the point?

Ok now, I'm not talking about laptops. I'm talking about this wireless (home)PC. Really, whats the point? once you throw printers, speakers, internet (phone line or cable modem) digital cameras and whatever other nifty toy's people have for there PC's these days your still going to have wires sticking out all over the place so really it's not a big deal since you can already go buy a wireless keyboard and mouse.
And who needs to move their home pc around that much? isin't that what laptops are for?
With the amount of time I'm on line I'd be broke:( mind you thats only a few pages like slashdot and a few web forums? hey ya! what about web forums? I'd rather pay a one time or monthly fee. Wouldn't that make more sense and NOT a big fee at all think about it say slashdot for example. I'm not sure how many people come here each day but say everyone payed $2 a month for slashdot or some other page they went to. It doesn't sound like much but $2 X the # of slashdot users each month isin't chump change.
No offence to you or anyone else but the thing that always gets me is that people want a "windows look and feel".......well then, why not just use windows? It's like saying I want a pepsi that looks and tastes like Coke;) It just doesn't always make sense to me. There are many useable gui tools for linux that are not 'windows" like and alot of them work better than the "windows look and feel" programs.
Is it me or are most (not all) windows look and feel programs just as bloated as the windows counter part?
I hate the nazis as well but we can't pick and choose freedom of speech and information to when it suits our point of view. That wouldn't really be freedom of speech would it?
It's hard for any company to compete with Intel sure AMD's done well but how many companies will really make any headway aginst Intel? Not many IMO. It's almost like trying to compete with Windows, Something may be a better product but when people get used to something they don't like to change. It scares them. Maybe not the best thing to compare this to but you get the idea.
If you look at many examples it's hard as hell to make money with open source. On the other hand it's alot easier to SAVE money with open source. For example switching over to linux servers like mentioned in that recent slashdot article. Switching applications over to open source as well. I can see people saving money with open source but making money, well thats easier said then done.
I think the reason for this is that Unix was never intended to be a desktop for the everyday home user. Sure people are trying to change linux int this and thats great but Solaris? I doubt it will ever make a dent in the desktop wars it just wasan't built for that. I use Sloaris at work and Linux at home but I couldn't picture my mother using Solaris, mandrake maybe...........
I'm not big on Gnome or CDE but XFCE is a great WM I use it with Solaris and Linux it's similar to CDE but a bit more flexiable and quicker. IMO I don't see the big deal if Gnome ships with Solaris or not bacause you can always download it. But then again that may suck for people on a dial up connection.
Then I wonder why anyone hasan't sued the makers of programs like pop off! and such, since they do basically the same thing, they prevent you from viewing ads. or better yet why not sue whoever mad the remote control!! after all with it you can also flip past the commericals!:)
This is yet more good news for Linux, showing where it can really shine, in the server market. Maybe this will pave the way for more big businesses to make the switch. Linux may never take over the desktop, it wasan't intended for that in the first place but in the server market Linux is a quailty product.
Plus no code red!!!;)

Just because it looks like MS-DOS does't mean it is MS-DOS. The same could be said for any command line system (including linux) if you use your method of identifying OS's.
If you remember in a New Hope (I think a new hope anyways it's been a while) They mention the "clone wars" that happened years before. I'm assuming this is what the title is addressing.
