"Why the consumer screaming? simple.. GM,Ford,Toyota,etc... will intentionally hike prices even higher due to the "forced changes" making you $17,000 budget sedan cost $36,000 and the stupid SUV's costs soar even higher.."
The car companies would never do this. If they started doubling prices other car companies would step in and sell for much cheaper prices.
Also, you should not force industries to use a new fuel source. If its economical then they will do it automatically. If they don't other companies will take there place by providing the fuel source.
Whats wrong with what they are doing now? Why should the author be required to tell you where you can pick up a used book instead of where you can get a new book.
"For too much time and too many things the consumers have been screwed over." How is the consumer getting screwed over? Here is something for you, if you don't like the price of something then don't buy it. The consumer has the power, if you think you got screwed on a deal than look no further than yourself cause your the one that accepted the deal.
NASA works like the US Military, and tries to keep its business within the us. It doesn't usually outsource.
With Buran their is two seperate components. You are probably refering to Energia rocket (Buran's booster which could lift cargo without the buran shuttle attached, i'm pretty sure it actually did launch a large soviet military satallite back in the cold war) and not the Buran shuttle. The Energia rocket could launch a 100ton payload into LEO, but with the Buran shuttle straped to its back the cargo would be about 30tons. Only slightly higher than the US Shuttle.
Anyway like you said they never finished the buran shuttle and its not man rated. Using it for a cargo booster doesn't make economic sense as their are cheaper ways to launch cargo into LEO, Arians Atlases Deltas Protons Soyuzs Ze nits
"you have an obligation to make sure the public has reasonable access to your work, at reasonable prices and with reasonable capabilites to use the work in a variety of ways, if you want to keep your copyright)."
The free market system determines all of this. We do not need government to do this. The copyright holder has the right to do what he/she wants with his/her property.
If I write a song and start selling cd's for it. It is NOT the governments job to tell me that my cd is overpriced or how I should sell it. The consumer determines that for me. If its overpriced sales will drop. And I will realize that if I want to sell more copies I should reduce my price. If I don't want to reduce my price than so be it. I just won't sell as many cds.
The only problem arrising about Music companies using copy protection on the cd is that unless properly labeled some players can't read it. Now do we need a law against this. No, its much easier. If you buy a cd that can't be read properly by your player then you return it. IF the store won't take it back that you probably have a legal case against them selling you a defective product. Any case, you should then stop buying cd's from that manufacturer. Belive me, if their sales drop they will change their ways or make less money. I should repeat that part because alot of people on these forums dont get it.
FOR ALL YOU PEOPLE BITCHING ABOUT HOW ThIS COMPANY OR THAT COMPANY IS INFRINGING ON "CONSUMERS RIGHTS". JUST STOP BUYING THE PRODUCT. IT REALLY IS THAT SIMPLE.
"Stalin was a worse murderer than Hitler - if they gave the bomb to Hitler, fewer innocent people would have died (maybe I'm exaggerating, but my point is that it is possible)."
Whats funny about that statement is if they gave the bomb to Hitler he would have used it against Stalin.
Yeah aren't they jerks. Phillips, Sony, and Pioneer spend huge amounts of money developing the DVD standard and getting people to use it, and also taking on the Risk of failure if people didn't migrate over from VHS.
Then what happens is some other companies "Righteous companies in your opinion" decide that Phillips, Sony, and Pioneer did all the hard work developing the technology and getting people to buy it. Now they can make the same product and sell it slightly cheaper and cash in.
Come on. DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THIS IS THE REASON PATENTS EXIST.
"I WANT to be the guy that storms the Normandy beach and LIVES. I want to be the Jedi that defeats Darth Vader."
You can. There are computer games designed for the single player gaming experience. Surprisingly they have been around for decades, and are even sold in the same stores that will carry Star Wars: Galaxies. WOW what a wonderful world.
P.S. If your looking to storm the Normandy beach and live, try Medal of Honor: Allied Assualt.
"now when that person wins, they still get the trophy.. not 7up or whoever.."
Yeah but nothing is stopping the driver from putting the trophy up on ebay and selling it for a couple of thousand dollars to some hardcore nascar fan.
The line is drawn by the customers. People on slashdot don't seem to realize this but its the customers that keep prices low. If the cable company decides that the top 50% are heavy users, then its the users responisbility to cancel their service if they do not want to pay the high fees. The users will find another service or learn to deal without a cable ISP.
And for all those people that are going to bitch about the fact that they "need" cable ISP, well if they really do need it then they will find a way to justify the costs.
"This is exactly how local phone service works. Some people buy a residential phone line and stay connected to a dial-up Internet service 24/7. Others use the phone for 5 minutes a day, but they pay the same price. The phone company doesn't call people to and threaten to disconnect them because they're making too many local calls. If too many people make calls, they just have to expand their capacity. If they don't, people will be unable to make phone calls (unlike the Internet, phone systems don't just "slow down" - they stop accepting calls completely when they reach capacity)."
So what, who says a cable ISP has to operate like a phone company.
"I'm not saying everyone should have unlimited bandwidth, but you should get the service that is advertised. If you pay for "unlimited usage", nobody should complain that you use "too much" bandwidth. And if it isn't really unlimited, it shouldn't be sold as unlimited. Somehow ISPs get away with this false advertising, and manage to convince people that it's wrong to actually use the "unlimited" bandwidth that they've paid for."
Im sure when they start implementing the new pricing policy they will drop the unlimited bandwidth sales pitch. Anyway before it was unlimited, now they just can't afford to be giving unlimited access for $40-50 (whatever they were charging).
Yeah, Q2 did suck, i never played q3 full but the demo wasn't all that great. I disagree about MOH though. MOH is a good game, its not great but makes for a very fun single player game. Except for that god damn sniper mission. Wolf was just bad.
Probably the best FPS to come out last year would be Serious Sam, thats what Doom 3 really should be like, but it won't. Doom 3 will end up being like Quake2 but with much better graphics and probably better AI.
"this requires the company to trust its employees and invest in them."
Trust is a two way street. The employees must also trust a company and make it worthwhile for the company to invest in them. Companys have right to layoff or fire employees and the employees have the right to leave the company.
"Does this make sense?" Of course it does, companies need to make profit or they cease to exist.
Do you even know what the Mars Direct mission is? Its not at all a flag and footprints mission like Apollo. Check out the Mars Direct Home page, http://www.nw.net/mars/ Also check out the technical document http://www.nw.net/mars/docs/nearterm.txt
The Mars direct Mission calls for a minimal stay of 1.5 years on the Martian surface far greater than the hours spent on the moon in Apollo. With a combustion powered rover which uses fuel produced on mars to allow about 24,000 ground kilometers can be traversed, ranging up to 500 km out from the base. Thus each mission can explore an area of approximately 800,000 square kilometers, which is roughly the size of the state of Texas.
"No, you're not all for exploration. If you were, then you'd understand that exploration is a reason to do it in its own right. If you need to have a reason to "explore," that means you're against it and looking for a better reason to get you up off your ass. "
You are so right. The same could be said for all of science. Just replace the word exploration with science.
"Potentially, you could make the surface of Mars the second-safest place in the solar system."
Someone's been reading Zubrin.
The moon is not a good practice for mars though. One point is on mars one of the major things to make the mission work is you need to produce resources on the surface rocket fuel, air, etc. On the moon there is no way to practice for this. Another point is that the spacecraft/landing craft would not need to be tested on the moon, its easier and a more accurate test to just put the space craft into earth orbit and test it landing on earth.
Wrong, the ISS is not needed nor is it designed to be a spaceport/drydock or deep space launching platform. Nasa already has a plan to get to mars "Mars Direct". They just need the funds and drive to implement it. Read "A Case for Mars" By Dr. Robert Zubrin, the creator of the Mars Direct Mission. Also check out http://www.marssociety.org
