Even if you don't live in the NY or NJ area any sort of blood donation is needed! There are huge lines today at Red Cross but blood will be needed in the coming days as well.

  5. Re:It's rooted in modern teaching methodologies on Are Computers Stealing Your Memory? · · Score: 1
Oh yeah the schools teach kids alright how to think! For example here is the internal conversation of a regular school-going kid:

Rebel: I hate math! - all we ever do is algorithms.
Conformist: But they are gonna slap me with an F if I don't do these gazillion problems by Wednesday!
Rebel: How is the darn thing ever used in real life?
Conformist: And mom and dad are gonna ground me if I get an F!
Rebel: Maybe I should learn just enough to get by - I will have more time for this cool robot that I am building.

The bare truth - schools don't encourage curiosity outside of the curriculum and do not provide an environment where failure results in learning new models/patterns/skills. Think about how people learn - babies will keep trying to get up and walk until they succeed. Falls and bruises will not hold them back. Why do we let schools "beat and bruise" our minds till we don't know any better? When was the last time when getting a "D" or "F" was considered a success? Go and explain everybody that you actually learned something along the way.

Now I understand this "wacko" teacher I had in college - he would give us like 100 calculus problems to solve overnight. The conformists would moan and groan and go home and actually solve the crap out of all of them. Some of us would solve a couple, get the gist of it and move on with our lives. We would devote more time to fun projects, programming, reading or whatever - next day we would come up to the prof and tell him all about it. He never even asked about the homeworks from the previous day. But he would get all excited about things that we find interesting and are passionate about.

Enough of putting kids in a mold!

  7. the 5k contest entries on Where Can I Find Beautiful Code? · · Score: 1

www.the5k.org has a great contest for writing a web page/site under 5k (html, javascripts, images included, no server scripting). As much as I dislike javascript there are some pretty impressive entres in the contest. It won't be pretty - as in the code will not be commented, and white space is stripped out - but those brave enough to go figure out the obfuscation will certainly find some of it quite "beautiful".

  8. JunkBusters.com can help to get rid of junk mail on Stuffing Junkmail Postage-Paid Envelopes? · · Score: 3

It's a great website. See for yourself - they have an online form JunkBusters Declare which lets you specify which kind of mail you do NOT want to receive and send out the declaration to all the major marketing companies. In addition they talk about the legal procedure to opt-out of junk mail at the post office.

  9. Yes, extend it to telemarketers and mail flooders on Norway Bans Spam · · Score: 1
Recently I received a forwarded test "Are you American?" (it was not spam btw, it was from a friend). The following question was in it:

    9. While getting ready for bed, you stub your toe on your wife's dressing table. What do you do?
    (a) Shout and swear a bit, after all, it did hurt
    (b) Make a mental note to move the table so it doesn't happen again
    (c) Immediately call a hotshot lawyer with an uptown reputation, and sue your wife's ass.

Doesn't this sound painfully familiar? Not the toe - the whole suing thing with Americans. Check out this statement by spectatorion:

Who is to say exactly what spam is? And what would prevent the state from jailing me for sending a friend an unsolicited email about a product i recently saw and thought he might like to buy?

Well, duh! If you get sued and jailed for sending your friend a review about a product you liked he wasn't your friend to begin with!!! Get your priorities straight people - the whole freedom thing extends waaaay too far. There are certain societal rules that you just DON'T tresspass!! Stealing time/resources/whatever from ISPs and individuals is a CRIME! Period.

Now if we could extend the same kind of policy to telemarketers and those companies that flood my mailbox with stupid coupons on a daily basis.

  10. Crazy stuff on What is 'IT'? · · Score: 1

I haven't stopped wondering all morning ever since I saw the article. Check out the statement "will people be allowed to use it?" in the MSNBC article. Doesn't this sound kind of odd? It's got to be something that can be very very useful while it can also be used illegally - and the legal usefulness of it has to outweigh the potential hazards. Besides the obvoius idea that it might be a new way for transportation - something like a hovercraft, could it be something as wild as a teleportation device?
