I was actually planing to leave Ukraine. For freelancer only important things are: Internet, postal service, low crime, low local taxes, friendly locals, easy long term visa. Warm climate would be nice too.
Money magazine published ad for CitiBank with my name in it. Ad was just filled in mortgage application form with my name in it.
My name is Leonid Volnitsky. There might exist other Leonid Volnitsy, probably somewhere in Russia or Ukraine.
But I will not bet on it. But I can bet that nobody uses such particular full name spelling in latin alphabet.
I pretty much ignored it. One day friends and co-workers started to
congratulate me that I am buying a house and I had to explain them that I am
pure sob who don't have money to buy a house in Silicon Valley and that I never even applied.
And that ad agency probably just saw my name somewhere and used it.
It is not just flushing the buffers but also swaping out now-inactive (interactive) processes. When I run some streaming app, I just disable swap. Also ionice and "sysctl -w vm.swappiness=1" might help too.
I is very usable from command line too. In GUI you can see some extra info without doing anything, but in my command line I can see it too (screenshots: http://volnitsky.com/project/git-prompt), without typing git status all the time.
I russian video they say that:

uses less explosive matter then MOAB, but is 4 times more powerful.
I wonder if webmail, can be proof of priority. It is probably better to use several big webmail providers. Email (content and timestamp) stored on webmail provider server, not easily accessible by outsiders.
Macbook touchpad already has HW capability for multitouch but it is not unabled in OSX. Under Linux I using it all the time. I configured it such so that when I touch with 2 finger it is like clicking middle button; 3 finger touch == 3rd button.
What version of Solaris? What your eeprom input-device / output-device pointing to? What your single user mode is? "1", "s" or "S"? In default config config, with graphic monitor, Solaris will start OpenWindows.
I worked with Unix for more then 20 years. I installed and worked with at least 15 brands of Unix-es, most of them commercial. I am certified (by Sun) Solaris System Administrator. Most of my income comes from supporting Solaris shops as consultant.
Yes, I believe that Solaris is most proprietary, which means difficult to support for those who support not only Solaris. Proprietary in the sense - don't adhere to historical Unix standards (posix != unix) and suffering from Not Invented Here syndrome. I will agree that most of commercial unix-es are proprietary. And I also agree that Sun contributed a lot to Unix and that pre SysV it had very decent product.
By my observation many of Solaris sysadmins worked only with one Unix - Solaris. This is probably why there is so much controversy about calling it proprietary. The same as Windows users who know only Windows become very defensive about MS products.
Folding, also known as "condensed mode", "compressed mode" or "document map" in other editors is used to make long file look like table of contents. For example if you are in C file with 50 functions, you hit key for condensed mode and only functions first line is shown (lines that match some regex). You can quickly understand structure of this file. You don't need to go to header file to see functions signatures. You go to the line with function that you are intrested, press enter, editor switches to normal mode and you are in your function. It is like menu of 50 items. Using it extensively to navigating long source files with other editors, I will put it on the same level of usefullness as unlimited undo or sintax highlighting. You can only understand how usefull it is after you will use it for some time.
Unfortunately Bram misunderstood this consept and probably didn't used it before. In VIM6 folding is not make-table-of-contents from this file but hide-part-of-the-file consept. Did anyone found this useful? All folding modes in VIM are designed to hide block of text, not to select line to be a title for block of text (and not mix table of contents with normal text).
It is possible to cajole fold-expr to make table of content. But with pain and it still don't work exactly right. If lameness filter allow me, I will post VIM macro - my attempt to "fix" VIM folding in next messate. By default title line selected based on indentation. Change by editing "set foldexpr=Foldexpr_fun('^\\i')" line. Should be in.vimrc file.
- No GUI or mouse, but real and good keyboard.
- No movable parts inside: solid state HD, no fans on CPU.
- Minimum spec: CPU 20MHz, RAM 32MB, HD 5GB
- Form factor: something similar to Sony C1 or Francklin eBook with foldable keyboard. Keyboard should be full size (C1 - 95%)
- Minimum IO: built in modem, 1x PCMCIA, 1x USB.
- Screen: Linux FB. LCD can be black/white if it will save power and price ( but hi-res).
- Manufacture should not make any attempts to develop custom apps. It should of cause have full open specs, and shipped with basic Linux (at list initially). More friendly non-slashdot type user environment, including non-X11 GUI, can be provided with ISVs (in dipandant software vendor).
Optional:
- USB mouse.
- ether, IR, 801.2b, CF/SM slot, GPS, and so on.
Something similar was already made:
Cidco MailStation . B/W LCD, pseudo graphics, $100, 1.9 pounds. Cidco decided that it will be much more usefull if they will make it proprietary and put only one application on it:(
Psions have too small keyboards for productive work.
I believe it can be done under $300, 1.5 pounds, battery life 24h+
That exactly what I didn't liked. Yes, it is possible to to use Personal CSS in Mozilla, but I have to remember fixed, specific to Moz path and name for CSS file. I am using the same Personal CSS file in three different browsers. So if every browser behaved like Moz, I should have tree copy of CSS file or make symbolic link mess in my home dir. If file can be shared with other apps, it's name should not be fixed.
I am myself prefer VIM/CL/Text conf files environment. But GUI app should be configurable from GUI. Mix GUI with CL/text configs is bad thing.
Why I can not specify personal CSS in Mozilla GUI setup? Yes I know that it is possible in some config text file to specify JS like command. But I will need to run Google, or dig in far conner of Mozilla.org. I will probably just run Opera. Ideally it should be enabled / dissabled with some hot key. Personal CSS is a good thing. Consistent fonts, colors and even one more way to disable ADs.
Also I wish Mozilla would be more keyboard friendly which makes working on laptop much more pleasant. Even better - with configurable keys.

Not only Ctrl/Meta/ALt, but you also don't have to use cursor key or mouse which are worst for carpal tunnel syndrome and perfect for touch typing. My carpal syndrome usually disaptiar when I switch to Unix/vi from Win.

It was a problem under Solaris too. I used to disable swap complitly on Solaris, when system was doing a lot of disk IO, to make interactive programs more responsive.
... ext3 is forwards and backwards compatible with ext2, allowing users
to keep existing file systems while very simply adding journaling
capability. Any user who wishes to un-journal a file system can
do so easily. (Not that we expect many to do so...)
Actually I want to do so. Anyone knows how to convert back to ext2? I installed 2.4.9 on Roswell but kernel don't
recognizes ext3. I've checked tune2fs(8) and everything in e2fsprogs.rpm and still can not find this info.

I am Russian. I have some temporary consulting job in US. One local
trait always amuses me. Americans, when subject of conversation
is Russia, always are big "experts" on what Russians are thinking.
Like for example when Networks cover some sport event, and Russians lose
to Americans then it is usually described as if in Russia it is something
like national tragedy. I of cause understand that journalists have
big imagination and that such additions make the event more gloatingly
pleasant for average Joe. PBS is not any different from CNN in this
sense. And when there is some Russian win or an achievement then
Russians portrayed with some pathologically excessive pride, with main
motivation for the achievement only to show off to those bad Americans.
It is of cause not only about Russia, you can replace Russia with
any US current enemy of the day.
+1 for Prgmr. Stable, fast, reliable. I am 4yr with them.
I was actually planing to leave Ukraine. For freelancer only important things are: Internet, postal service, low crime, low local taxes, friendly locals, easy long term visa. Warm climate would be nice too.
Does any one knows such place?
I forgot to mention one impotent detail. Address in form which was in ad was in city of San Mateo. I lived at that time in San Mateo also.
Money magazine published ad for CitiBank with my name in it. Ad was just filled in mortgage application form with my name in it. My name is Leonid Volnitsky. But I am still curious if my name use was legal.

I don't know which is better, but you can get now $5/month http://prgmr.com/ VPS( Virutal Private Server?) with Xen which is awesome!

Unix has /etc/fstab, Solaris has vfstab.
Unix don't start GUI in single user mode.
Unix has a C compiler (not an application wich is sold separatly). C compiler under Unix is not only development tool but also installation tool.
MS Windows is POSIX compliant. But it don't make it a (standard) Unix.
