  1. Why not MySQL? on What's In Your Inbox? · · Score: 1

I think that if someone were to develop a mysql storage system, either to be stored locally on the client side or server side (server side beig the optimal choice), it would be the Next Big Thing in email. Of course, deciding which of all of the hundreds (thousands??) of non-standard headers to store may be an issue. But I would love to search my inbox using a few simple mysql queries.

I agreee, VNC would not work for security reasons (I don't want to open VNC to the outside).

Watching the baby sitter is definitely an important reason why I wanted to set up the camera, but I was also looking to use while the baby was sleeping and to have a quick and easy way to see if she is OK. We probably won't be having any baby sitters for a while, but I do know that every time she (yes, we know "she's a she") makes a sound in the middle of the night, my wife will want to go to her room to see what's up. The camera could make life a lot easier. Also an important quality will be low light level operation.

But seriously, I think the problem with spam is education. Watch where you give out your email. Read those web forms carefully. Quit with the "FW: FW: FW: This is so cool!" emails. They aren't interesting, or cool. Stop sending online greeting cards. They are only in the business to collect email addresses. It's really not that hard.

  21. Ethics and Technology on Ethical Dilemmas Related to Technology · · Score: 2, Interesting

I took an Engineering Ethics class when I was working on my undergrad at Auburn (War Eagle!). Anyway, I remember one particular anecdote quite well. The professor wasked the class, "Would you say air bags in cars are good or bad?" Most of the students agreed that they were good. In fact, they have saved thousands (millions??) of lives. No question about it. However, it turns out that the average cost for hospitalization has increased during the same time frame (not just inflation--they realy have gone up). It seems that for accidents where people were usually killed (pre-air bags), the lower body injuries have become what are keeping people in the hospital. And more people are having life-long paralysis as a result of those accidents. Now, most would still agree that being alive is still better, but it turned out that there was another side to the coin that probably wasn't completely thought out.

    Have fun with your class.
