Actually, printing bibles was the first 'killer app' of the printing press. The first printing presses did text only, no pictures, so printing porn was a technical impossibility. A good summary of the history, development and ramifications of the printing press can be found here: http://www.digitalcentury.com/encyclo/update/print.html
>how does an entire country have less research computing power than a university?
Easy - just keep putting the Liberals into office. Their buddies make out like bandits. The rest of us will be back to an abacus and tin cans & string in no time.
That, and because Usenet is a lousy method of distributing binaries. I think that Usenet is indeed on the RIAA's radar screen, but they can't move against it until their reposts show up...
1 virtual mod point and a golf clap to you. I cringe whenever I hear Slashdot described as 'the voice of the Linux community' by mainstream media. I doubt that Linux will ever reach mass acceptance until we are able to stop equating using a particular operating system with a particular political viewpoint.
Does anyone else out there appreciate the irony of the Free Software Foundation being so adamant about other people's software licensing choices? Not to mention petty fights over names.
A strawman argument is defined as: stating a misrepresented version of an opponent's argument for the purpose of having an easier target to knock down. Since you brought up that particular claim, I can't figure out if:
1. You intended to elicit a response such as mine, in which case you should be congratulated
or
2. You don't know what a strawman is, and you threw it in because you thought it sounded good, in which case you might want to think about going BACK to Harvard and try attending some classes instead of cutting the grass.
Quick response - child porn does harm someone - the victim being photographed. Every piece of child porn is a record of an incident of child abuse. Your own predilections aside, society has determined that child porn is NOT A GOOD THING to have around. That is, our elected officals have determined this, not me. If you don't like that, you can always petition your representative to have the laws changed to permit it. Lots of luck to you.
If only Novell hadn't abandoned the SuperNOS initiative a few years ago. If they hadn't, and Netware was able to run Linux binaries today, this wouldn't be news, this would be expected.
For those that don't know what I am talking about, at one point in the distant past, Novell bought the source code to the orginal AT&T Unix and announced plans to merge Unix and Netware into what they called 'SuperNOS'. It would have let Unix programs run on Netware servers. The project was dropped a few years later. My guess is that the old-guard Novell engineers refused to consider Netware as an application running on top of another OS. Eventually, they sold the Unix source code to SCO, who was bought by Caldera, who changed their name to SCO. Confused yet? Sad. If only they had stuck with it, Novell would be in a much better position today. (Factual corrections welcome. You're gonna post anyway, you might as well have my blessing on it)
How many sites out there are still running Netware 3.12? TONS. Why? Because just works. You install it, configure it, and after that you can forget about it because it doesn't need to be coddled to get through the day. Apache 1.3 is the same. It does it's job so well, there's no compelling reason to upgrade.
This isn't news, it's just a leftist with a personal axe to grind. So what else is new? Google doesn't rank his site high enough, therefore their page ranking methods are faulty, and they're part of a government/military/industrial conspiracy as well.
This isn't news, it's just life in our brave new socializd world.
1. Inflate their egos - adopt the attitude that anyone with any intelligence at all MUST be a developer and anyone in any other profession must be there because they're not smart enough to program.
2. Pander to their fears and insecurities. Project an image that says that you and your product are THE next big thing. Their own fear of obsolescence will drive them to you like lemmings being herded by Disney execs.
3. Lie to their faces, with sincerity and conviction. Tell them that chicks REALLY DO prefer smart guys over football jocks, and your product will prove it.
Bottom line - developers are human (barely) and can be influenced and swayed with pretty trinkets like any other group. Good Luck!
Yet another story of a Linux company in trouble or quitting altogether. Looks like the Linux revolution is taking a bit longer than originally expected...
The way I see it, publicizing this tool will have the opposite effect. Firewall admins all over will be smacking themselves on the forehead, saying "Protocol 11? We only need TCP, UDP and ICMP. Better block everything else."
Because it is so easily blocked, this will neutralize an entire class of attacks (ie. ones that use anything but TCP, UDP and ICMP). I suspect that, since it is now well-publicized, we will see this show up in security seminars, documents, HOW-TOs, etc: 'Be sure to block any protocols that your company isn't using because tools have been discovered in the wild that use protocols other than TCP, UDP and ICMP'.
If this doesn't convice people that security flaws are better exposed than hidden, I don't know what will. This tools was written two years ago. Where else is it, or it's derivitives, being used?
Shawn Fanning is the one who lost the most on this one. His pet project started as an interesting software hack and went to having millions of users worldwide. It was then destroyed by clueless people who have access to a near-unlimited supply of money who blamed him for users that abused his service. Good luck to him, and it will be interesting to see what he comes up with next.

That's a good start, but do you have anything past the primordial stage?
I believe all the speculation is based on the assumption that life is an accident.
...
Of course, the alternative is not something most people are willing to consider

'Mac ignorance'
Isn't that redundant?

And child porn is designed to impart information?
Bill! Get on the phone and call security.
Looks like Steve has escaped from his cel^H^H^H^H office again.
That should take about a billion.
Don't forget debian.slashdot.org
Great post.
If I had any mod points right now, you would have one of them.
It's just the flag guy for the Vogon construction fleet.

If anyone wants me - tell 'em I'll be in the corner eating crow with a slab of humble pie for dessert.
