Ordered through the web, delivered through a digital cable terminal. I doubt that it will supplant DVD's anytime soon (death of DVD? VHS is still more popular) but I would be willing to part with a couple of bucks to make sure that I could watch the current '24' anytime I wanted.

A peaceful, free society depends on rules and guidelines to keep it so. Deciding on what laws to pass is a continual balancing act between the two extremes of anarchy and dictatorship. I'm going to back this guy up. Last year I dropped by a little cyber-cafe cafe to enjoy a couple of cool ones while brushing up on Sendmail config. I had the (mis)fortune to share the place with our local anime fan club, who were viewing episodes of Tenchi. One of these episode had a female character who, under the guise of a medical examination, attempt to coerce the lead character into sexual activities. This was preceded by an in-depth introduction by the club president, accompanied by much sophomoric giggling, and followed by an extensive analysis. The whole thing reminded me of a junior-high schoolgirl sleepover, not a gathering of college-age males. Sad, really.

  9. Elitism Marketing on Why Does Manga Succeed Where American Comics Fail? · · Score: 0, Flamebait

Why do people still buy LP's when CD's are superior in every way?
Why do people insist on using Macs, despite being more expensive, less powerful, and having the last few versions of Windows erase any supposed "usability" advantages?
Why do people gleefully pay $100 / foot for speaker cable?

The same reason people immerse themselves in manga and anime - despite it's shallow plots, insipid characters and terrible artwork. The way it's marketed. The message is "People who read anime are smarter and hipper than everyone else". People who read this stuff (and use Macs, buy LPs, etc) want to see themselves as being part of an elite group. University students are terribly susceptible to this. Why else do you see them flocking to Starbucks when the same coffee is available, for less money, at the gas station across the street? Elitism. Status. To them, it's not just coffee, it's an attempt to become a member of the privileged few.

The key to marketing to university students, entertainment media types ( and any other industry when wisdom known as "common sense" has minimal penetration ) is to overtly claim many supposed technical merits of your product ( don't worry about facts here - they don't matter ), then subtly tell them that people who use your product are smarter, trendier, and darn it, just plain better than everyone else. Jack your prices up three to five times higher than normal, and you're a millionare. If you can throw in a dash of sex appeal, you're a billionare.

BAH. The entire Quake series is nothing but an advertisement for id's 3D engines. Quake only gets interesting when someone who knows how to design games comes along and turns a twitchfest into an actual game that's fun to play.

Half-Life. Hitman. Max Payne. Now those are games worth playing. Mood, atmosphere, all kinds of ways to kill things and (gasp) a real honest-to-goodness storyline. And you get to use your head for something other than holding up your ears and a place to stick your eyeballs.

  11. Re:Why people believe weird things. on The Borderlands Of Science · · Score: 1
"Why believe in God" is hardly a rhetorical question. Everyone must eventually ask it, and find an answer. The ones who answer with 'nothing' become atheists. The ones who find other answers become believers of some sort or another.

In assuming that belief in God must be explained away by an 'excuse' you are making the same mistake as the post I responded to. Is it not conceivable that people make up their own minds based on their own experiences, or is it only athiests who are smart enough to do that?

There are millions of people who have come to know and follow God as adults that were not raised to believe in Him as children.

From Carl Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit (linked above), your question "Why the else would anyone believe in god?" falls under the category of "begging the question, or assuming the answer". What evidence do you have that all adults that believe in God only do so because of childhood teachings?

    High Quality Animation??

I gotta call you on that one. I haven't seen any anime that even comes close, in terms of quality, to the animation coming out of Disney and Pixar these days. Mouths that are actually lip-synced with the words, rather than alternating between large and small ovals. Body parts move and bounce realistically. Hair that moves. Human heads and eyes are actually in porportion to the rest of the body. Not to mention that some female characters are drawn that don't conform to the doe-eyed-Japanese-schoolgirl look.

The best that can be said of anime is that the storylines are very different than that of North American cartoons. NA cartoons are aimed at kids, where anime is aimed squarely at the prepubescent crowd, or adults that haven't progressed beyond that stage. The quality, however, is absolute crap.
