As far as I understand it, the belief that a "big bang" created the universe is similar to shaking a puzzle in it's box, throwing the pieces on the table, and having them all fall perfectly into place. From an mathematical standpoint, this is impossible.
No... not impossible, imPROBABLE. It could happen, just probably wouldn't.
Before you declare things to be impossible, think.
Labbatts brews it for Canada, right here in good Ole London Ontario, using water from the always clean and clear Lake Huron. I drive past the place daily, and it sure SMELLS like a pint o' guinness... ICK!
no one will notice, as long as another country is willing to begin a whole new space program from scratch to cover for them. Yes, the ESA has done some things, I can't deny that, and they continue to grow and send off new experiments, but again, not on the scale that NASA does. Don't get me wrong - as a Canadian I'd like nothing more than to see NASA fail and the CSA (Canadian Space Agency) start and takeover, but you and I both know that won't happen. We, the populas of Earth, generally rely on NASA for all our space exploration needs, as well as space station construction (although the Russians seem to have done a pretty good job), sattelite launching, various probes etc.
A multinational space exploration team/project would be the best solution, in my oh so humble and mis-informed opinion. Something all countries can contribute to, financially and technically.
Yes, but when was the last time they launched a shuttle into space, or sent probes to mars, etc?
They don't seem to be quite as high profile as NASA, nor as active. Yes, there have been some experiments done by the ESA, but not on the scale of NASA.
Its truely disturbing, the the country the rest of the world relies on, and watches/learns from, is cutting back on it's space budget. As the only country in the world to have a space program worth it's salt (with rockets that don't explode on liftoff, generally speaking), the international community should start looking at possibly funding NASA, or starting up their own space agency. The world relies on NASA (and the US) to be their 'space embassaders' (god, I wish I could spell), but they are cutting their budget during a critical time in the Mars project.
I think it is incredably short sighted of the US Congresspeople (or however your system works) to cut funding to what could be considered one of mankinds greatest projects.
How have you lost control over who you are? Instead of carrying your 4 cards around in your wallet with the same info, you carry one. All the information is ALL the same, ALL of it exists, ALL of it is redily available currently - how is putting it on one card more freedom-taking than carrying 4 cards?
... this is exactly the attitude that all humans should share. What makes me (as a Canadian) different from most of you, Americans? I have 2 hands, 2 legs, 1 head, 1 heart (and all those other vital organs), but I'm not allowed to work in your country because I'm from Canada, a separation that doesn't exist anywhere but in an Atlas. Because you live 200km south of me, you are a legal American, while I am not. Not that I want to be American. But I feel that all humans hsould be allowed to go anyplace on this earth without any hinderance what-so-ever. Why? Because I have no right (nor does anyone else) to tell you you aren't welcome here, because I don't own this country, nor does anyone else on this earth, or anywhere else for that matter. We all own this land, but we still make claims that this is 'my land', 'our country'... to me, Illegal Immigration doesn't exist - what is exists is a bunch of people (politicians, etc) telling people they aren't good enough to be on this part of the earth.
This will never be fied, simply because there aren't enough voices...
... how is putting information on a piece of plastic restricting your freedom? Thats like saying that eating tuna makes the moon rotate slower. They have absolutly no connection.
good points, all of them, but simply having the information doesn't mean they are going to use it.
Look at it like this: I would LOVE to have a single card that I could pull out and use everywhere. I go into the bank, it's my bank card, I get pulled over, it's my liscence, I go get a job, it's my SIN (SSN) card, it's my library card, my video rental card. It's everything. No hassles.
Just because they have access (who ever THEY are) doesn't mean they are going to use it to find out crap about you. Why do they CARE what cereal you ate.
If companies started getting this info, I would be more concerned about it. But the government I trust, not to make the right decisions, but to not divulge information that they shouldn't.
The legal system would have a blast with THAT lawsuit.
Why is it that Americans, in general, are so damned stubborn when it comes to what they consider their 'constitutional rights'?
Everyone gets up in arms because someone might have their SSN (I'm assuming this is something like our SIN here in Canada) put on their drivers liscense.
who cares? For one - no one ever looks at Drivers liscences, two, no one cares what your SSN is, so why worry about it. If someone wants to find out info about you it's as simple as getting your name, and everything elsecan be looked up within hours (minutes...)
Americans are so concerned about little things like this... "oh my god, another number on my liscence, the world is over, boo hoo". "oh my god, i might not be able to carry a concealed weapon or buy guns at the corner store any more, boo hoo".
It's probably time to have a look at what you consider your rights and decide where you can give a little, and where you can take a little.
Todd - annoyed with paranoid Americans.
"You're not paranoid if they really are out to get you" - doesn't apply in this case.
The story that was constructed in the Matrix is an excellent one, one that, as the article says, leads itself to a sequal. I think a story like this would make an excellent set of books, chronicaling the war with the robots before hand, and the battle afterwards... it will be very interesting to see which way they decide to go with the movies, prequel or sequel. I can't wait, and I think that that break from the *ahem* 3 years between sequels will bring fans in and keep them happy.
Although we have some incredably stupid practices (Can you say CRTC?) most of the time we rule the world (blanket phrase - I don't actually think we rule the world to those of you who might want to start a debate)
Having said that though, I'm a little concerned about the legal precedence this might be setting, where nettiquite (or other standard social practices) becomes upholdable by law. What the judge is sayin is that because popular opinion is against you, you are wrong. Yes, this is taking the case to an extreme, but it's a trend I don't want to see started. Just because I like Linux doesn't mean I'm wrong, it just means I'm different (better!) than some of the other computer users out there. Just because someone (sigh, I hate to say this) Spams me doesn't mean he's wrong, it means that he's not right by our accepted net.standards. Isn't the net about non-standards though? Freedom to express - yes, spam isnt' an expression, but again, it's a road I don't want to go down.
oh wow! I'd forgotten about that game.. it used to crash... hmmm.. what point was that.. I can picture the screen in my head... you'd go into the room on the left and try to grab something or other and that was it. My fav game on the apple ][e was Minute Man.. flyin a helicopter to build a bride so a train could go over it... but the evil russians (I think) kept stealing the parts. Weee! memories!
looks like Wired was pushing Rob a little hard in that interview... from the way it reads it looks like Rob (and andover.net guy) were getting irritated... hmm...
From my personal experience, doing the long hard job search, this article is absolutly correct - the morons control the masses of computer geeks. My current contracting company doesn't even have a computer person on staff... they have another company come in and do it for them. This concerns me greatly, but because of contractual clauses etc, I can't leave without losing lots of potential jobs. Damn Legalese. todd - post of firstage
Wow! I wasn't even BORN then:) I think it would be incredable to find a good book on the history of innovations and stuff that I missed out on while growing up and being blissfully unaware of the computer world. Anyone have any suggestions?
There is a good book on the 'origins' of the Internet called 'Where Wizards Stay up Late' covering the development of the initial hardware as well as the progression upto today. Very good book for anyone to read, but this book has a lot of good information pertaining to what I perceive as your research goal. It also contains a list of references at the back which might be of assistance. Good Luck! Todd
This to me is the same as calling the person who got raped the problem, just because they wore tight clothes or was flirting. Sorry - It don't work that way.

Thats all it takes for me. i'm 6'2, 240 pds, and i'm drunk in 1 stinkin pint, of Keiths (my beer of choice).
I can go out and get myself drunk on 2 pints - total loss:
I love being intolerant! It's SOO wonderous!

that humming in your ears makes it very hard to listen to mp3s that early though ... at least not without pissing off the neighbours.
