  1. It's not the pop up ads that I hate, it's adware on Pop-Up Ads Lead to Consumer Revolt, Ad-Blocking · · Score: 1

granted this shows that I'm a windows user but I hate it when extra software like bonzi buddy, n-case, or any other software like it to bring up ads, popup windows, adds crap to my favorites, won't let you change your home page anymore, and gives me "free access" to porn. I've accidently had some installed but my moron of a sister seems to get the same crap installed every time she uses it. Ad-aware is great but doesn't have real time scanning or blocking.

But then my mac works great with no instances of that crap. YAY!

I thought all lcd's have a backlight. If you turn the brightness all the way down to low and shine a flashlight on the screen you can still see what's on the screen. The back light illuminates the screen so you can see what's on it.

the less people that call me, the better! Actually I like email for a few issues. It's great even if a company has different people replying because you (and they should) have a good record of what has been said, and when they start to not understand, you can just copy and paste what was said/done earlier. Calling is more for quick questions, product replacements, or when your current and only internet connection isn't working.

If you're going to say they want a tractor beam then try finding an article where thy at least use the words "tractor" and "beam." I got all excited because I thought there was going to be some good info on some new tractor beam technology, but no. It's an article where the police want life sized remote control cars.

SETI and consumer stupidity (I know it's not an app.) When I used to do tech support for a PC manu, most people would ask "Hey, I want the biggest, fastest PC that you have... What is it?" I like how the poster has mentioned that we don't need a 3.2 Ghz machine to run word, check mail, or view sites but that's what most consumers do.

I wonder what would happen if chip makers stopped making faster chips. How long would it take for most apps to catch up and for people to notice?

I used to hotswap it on my performa 6116/CD. Now it was never intended for that but if you have a utility to rescan the bus the disks will mount. It was an internal drive. After a while of doing this the drive for ejecting the disk wore out. In order to get the thing to take/eject disks I had to move the gears manually! After a while of hotswapping the jazz drive wouldn't power up at all. So after taking the main board apart there was a good charred mark by the power connector and there was no continuity. After dropping a good amount of solder on it, it powered right up. I think the drive died about 3 months later.

  25. Linux not winning desktop market on Perens: Unite behind Debian, UserLinux · · Score: 1

I'll admit I don't know as much as I should about Linux to be reading slashdot, but here's my thoughts on the current state of linux, and the issue of making one distro for all.

Although I am all for Linux I aggree that it has shortcomings to what MS/Apple has to offer. Mainly ease of install and use. Combine that with a bunch of distro's that you can choose from until you find one that works/fits what your doing, the process of downlaoding and installing Linux could take a while for non-techies.

Basing efforts on one distro would limit choice and could be seen to a detriment to most people that use linux. And I aggree with that. But what if there were a main flavor of linux that was slightly stripped down. If you want features of a certain distro you can install an add on. (About 100-200M in size) This would add all of the features of that distro and still give you choices of distro's to use.

I understand that this is basically what the linux kernel is, but instead of packaging the kernel with every distro, just distribute the kernel where it can run (graphical interface and easy for end users) without any changes but you can add on distro packages.
