I think porn dialers are the worst (and best.) Worst because it causes a lot of damage to your phone bill when you get an international call. The best because I work for a dialup ISP and it's funny when you hear agents go "Maybe it was your husband?" Brings a smile to my face every time.
(It's also funny because if I "accidently" run across one it tries to dial out when I have no modem installed, just a NIC.)
I aggree that the cost to manufacturers would be lower if they used linux but their thinking may be that it's worth it to put out a product where the operating system is familiar to about 90% of people that own a PC already.
Wasn't that in a star trek? A soldier had a small tracking device that would explode when it sensed oxygen. They had to remove it in a chamber filled with some odd gas and the thing looked like a pickle slice.
"Unless Microsoft decides to make radical changes to their service modem, any Windows-based operating systems will still remain a closed system, where Windows owners cannot access the source code from their own machines. Additionally, the users of Windows are limited to browsers and instant messaging software. As I mentioned earlier, this is a drawback for non-borg users, who expect choice in browsers, choice in software, and choice in distros."
I was low level formatting a hard drive that I had so I could use it in another pc to install an os. A buddy of mine comes over when it's in the middle for formatting and asks "What are you doing?" I reply "I'm formatting that hard drive." and I pointed at the drive I was trying to wipe out. He looked at the drive, looked at the screen and said "You're formatting the wrong drive." Sure enough, I had the wrong drive and erased the drive with all my docs, music, movies, pics, etc. I now make it a point to only keep the drive that I am working on connected.
Another time I was playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 on my iBook that I had for 3 days. I wasn't using the power adapter and it shut off on it's own. I turn it back on and no matter what it won't boot! I know everything wasn't lost but damn, something was messed up.
Oh yea. I bought a game for my Mac 512k. Brought it home and went out for some reason. I come back and my mom goes up to me and says, "I treid playing your game and I put the disk in and it said Format. So I figured I had to format it to use it... so I did." Doh!
I think a tivo will take up to 127gb. It's a kernel limit and there's a way to up it but it looks like a pain. Besides, two 100G drives in a tivo would be more than enough. (for me at least)
(and I'm guessing you meant hours, not minutes, right?)
You shouldn't have any problems. I am sure these people are more concerned about the costs involved rather than what something is running. Just explain that it costs less and that it runs even better than what you had before. I don't think he can argue with that.
(Or you could copy the Microsoft commercial. Give him some change and tell him that you save that much any time someone connects to the server.)
I think they changed the brushed metal look at the top. It looks spotty now. I compared it to iTunes and it just doesn't look right. Anyone else notice this?
I don't know much about bluetooth but I remember a gameboy bluetooth setup that someone made for college. I was able to get a cached page of their bluetooth info here: http://216.239.51.104/search?sourceid=navclient-me nuext&q=cache:http%3A//www.it.lth.se/it/msprojects/ita/past/playmobile/html/4/index.html
I did a search for the ericsson development kit that they used and found a few good links:
If I read the article right there is supposed to be some type of system that identifies the attack, validates who the attacker/offending user is, and notifies them via email that they've been fined. With all this effort going in to tracking and such, why don't they just block the attacks? Blaster could have been slowed if the appropriate ports were blocked at an ISP level. SoBig could have been blocked by mail servers (either looking for a specific file size or blocking certain subjects). If we have enough technology to find these problems, why don't we block them?
Also, what happens when an ISP feels they don't like file sharing? Would user's be fined for having certain file sharing ports opened on their pc's?
People have opinions, people share opinions, and if they can do it quicker than before, they will. If new movies didn't blow then they wouldn't have this problem. The movie/entertainment industry needs to realize they are subject to the same rules as any other company that is selling something. If a product sucks then it won't sell.
I say that we blame TV/Radio/Internet for having to listed to the MPAA bitch. (Slashdot excluded of course)
I agree. There's a lot of kids that graduate from ITT or just get their A+ and apply for tech support jobs. Some know the hardware or software but watching new agents troubleshoot an internet connection is hard to listen to sometimes.
I wouldn't blame all of the sour tech experiences on the agents though. A good amount of customers that I deal with can't follow simple instructions or answer non-tech questions.
Here's the most common:
(beginning of tech call) Me: "Ok what is on the screen right now" User: "Oh, well I can't connect to the internet while I am on the phone" Me: "You're in front of your computer, right?" User: "Yes" Me: "And it's on, right?" User: "Yes" Me: "We'll try this again, what is on your screen?"
They usually give the right answer the second time around.
The best is when spelling out the smtp server, you say "S as in Sam, M as in Mary, T as in Tom..." and they have typed in sammarytompaul.mailserver.com
End users may not like dealing with techs but it's no picnic for us either.
I have winxp, 2000, and mac os X machines. They just all use windows file sharing. I forgot what version of os X started supporting it natively. There are programs like dave or sharity to use with older versions of os x. I used sharity before and liked it a lot. I'm *gasp* not too familiar with linux network and file sharing so I couldn't tell you if you could use win file sharing on it. If that's not an option I'd agree with other posts by recommending ftp.
Greed and stupidity. People are used to and willing to pay a large amount for bandwidth. Companies will charge a customer as much as they can if they can get away with it. Hopefully things like charging $21 a month will change the way consumers view what they have over here, and service providers will have to change. Unfortunately competition is not an issue since I doubt people are doing to move for that kind of service. But it does look tempting:)
Here's the only thing that I don't quite aggree with:
"Misleading Prices Both Apple and Dell are guilty of using misleading prices. For example, Apple gives the price of the low-end G5 as "$1999", and the high-end G5 as "$2999". In other words, they have subtracted $1 from a $3000 computer to make it seem cheaper, which is absolutely ridiculous. This demonstrates that both Apple and Dell are willing to mislead people when stating their prices. "
Just about any time you buy something it has a dollar or a penny missing.

3m made some very non conductive liquid. But it was about $100 a gallon. Someone bought 3 gallons, took a styrofoam box, dropped a MB inside, threw in some of this stuff and it worked fine. I forget how well it cooled everything down though. Anyone have a link for this?
Kind of off topic but is the riaa going after anyone with .ogg or .wav files?
wow, i'm not crazy. I knew this was a dupe from a while ago but can never use the search to find anything.

That blows. I've got a 600Mhz iBook. The system requirements state 400-500Mhz or higher. Anyone definitely try running Soundtrack on a G3?
