Actually, the War was supposedly fought entirely in space. The treaty was handled over audio COMMs only, so the Federation never managed to find out what the Romulans looked like.
I would say, congratulations on still being a virgin, but I guess that's sort of redundant here, huh?:)
Lots of MMORPGs are trying to save their subscription base and get an influx of new people, DAoC did this same thing but I don't think it worked all that well. I really think this should be the release model in general, anyway, ie. make the game free and then charge the monthly cost OR - and this is my personal favorite - make the game cost more and charge no monthly fee.
Still, not going to get me to play Everquest. I'm waiting for WoW, and if it doesn't rock my world, I'm giving up on MMORPGs for a while.
OK nevermind. Answering my own questions. IPV4, LAN-only.
I wonder how it would work in multiple-layer LAN environments, though. Can it subnet? And with any new tech, I wonder how easily exploitable something like this will be. It's nice to see Apple innovating though. You sort of get the idea that self-healing, autonomic computing is just around the corner.
Sounds like sort of an advanced DHCP. Is this for implementation on an IPV6 or standard IP4 network? Does it include building routing tables between objects as well? Maybe someone can explain it better than I understand it.
Did this Orkut guy sign an NDA or is there some sort of specific document that says he promised he wouldn't develop another social service?
It seems like a pretty weak case, and I agree with the parent, if the company should be going after anyone, it's the person who created the code. Google shouldn't be liable for someone ripping off or developing code based on work done for another company's engine unless Google knowingly did it; and I very highly doubt they would. Only of course they know they can't sue the person himself because there isn't any money in it - if nothing else they could be trying to pocket money from other competitors who want Google to lose, just like MS funded SCO.
Of course he can quit. That isn't the point of the article. The point is that the managers of the company were forcing non-exempt employees to work more time than they reported. It's ILLEGAL. Furthermore, IANAL, but I bet it qualifies as tax fraud as well.
Now, if these programmers were salaried, exempt, employees, the managers would be in a better position. But this wasn't the case.
The simple fact of the matter is that labor laws require employers to pay overtime to non-exempt employees. If the employee is right and managers were 'tweaking' the hours, it's illegal, and give the guy filing the suit credit, he had the balls to point it out.
Of course they fail to point out the other side of the matter, which is that maybe the managers were doing this because they were being squeezed by the higher ups who were putting pressure on them to farm the work out to India or something. I guess time will tell.
If you ask me, spamming doesn't bother me nearly as much as popup windows on IE that download Ad Viruses like WtoolsA and ClearSearch on my computer. Spam requires I click on the mail and hit delete or Spam. All hail Yahoo.
No, for me, it is the websites that authorize Ad Viruses that piss me off. People who host such sites should be permanently shutdown and its owners castrated.
And yes, I know IE sucks, but my girlfriend uses IE regularly and she doesn't know better and it's not as easy to get her to switch over to Opera or Mozilla. And it seems a lot of stuff just doesn't work right without scripting.
So before going after spammers, go after those fuckers, for gods' sakes. I'm sick of having to troll through my computer every night running Adaware and HijackThis and antivirus to ensure I don't have more crap on my computer.
of two Atari employees, talking as they dig in the desert:
"Are you sure this is the right place?"
"Not really, it's been over twenty years."
"What a waste."
"Yeah."
"Did you ever play it?"
"What, ET? God, no. I've heard horror stories, though. One guy said his brother was playing it in the dark at night and got sucked into the 7th circle of hell."
"That right?"
"Yep."
"Ok, well this is about as close as I remember. You have the discs ready?"
First off, there are successful bands who never got airtime on MTV. There are very few of them, however, and most of them are still under big labels, like Phish.
Secondly, enough distribution and advertising to become a hot item without the major labels in our current culture is near impossible due to several things:
1) So-called Independants which are basically the new payola. You can't get on the radio because it's all owned by Clear Channel, hence why you hear the same 15 songs being played on every radio station. Even classic rock has sold out so you only hear like 5 bands on classic rock stations nowadays. Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC and two others.
2) An absolute stranglehold on the lawmaking institution due to heavy political lobbying.
3) Media conglomeration. You can't be on MTV or VH1 (owned by the same HUGE conglomerate) without a major label behind you. You can't get nominated for a Grammy without one. You can have a great music video and they still wouldn't distribute it.
You also can't get on the cover of Rolling Stone or any major magazine, or even be a blurb in there, without someone covering you. Rolling Stone is NOT an independant media company. See media conglomerate. And they won't cover you unless you're up and coming AND on a major label.
4) Internet media conglomeration. Let's face it, you could search around on the internet but you won't find any concensus about up and coming bands except on those websites which are already owned by big media.
Face it, music industries have a verticle stranglehold on distribution because they own all forms of media and communication. Media conglomeration is a HUGE issue right now but one no one will talk about, and with politicians in their pockets it's useless. Notice how much the media wants you to believe there are only two possible parties, when there should be many more than that in this country. It's bread and circuses for the masses, let's face it. You can like indie bands but don't expect them to be popular without selling out to the man, which they'll be happy to do as most full-time bands can barely afford rent.
I agree, I'm not Bill Joy preaching the end of the world but there's something to be said about guarding some secrets. All it takes is someone posting their new virus on the internet and 'open' sourcing it for some terrorist somewhere to start developing a really nasty world killer. I think the way it is currently is pretty scary, we've got people basically building new viruses without first understanding how to create a vaccine or drug or other remedy. And there seem to be a lot of people who want to play God out there, it only takes one.
Is the world really ready for another MMORPG? I liked the Ultima series, and HOMM2 was a great game, but Lineage 2 wasn't exactly a breakthrough in the mold of MMORPGs, and with all of the current cookie-cutter MMORPGs, I'm not sure I want yet another one that isn't wholly different than the sort of leveling treadmill it's become.
Look on page 27. He's trying to integrate homeomorphic convergence using a Baxter-Bates supermodality, which Krause clearly explained is impossible for T(s) in a non-linear progression.
Ok, just fuckin with ya. My mind wandered after I saw the word 'Abstract.';)
I doubt it'll be here by Christmas. It sounds to me like Sony's trying to rush the PSP's development along as it is.
In any case, I don't like the price tag for the PSP: 300, 400 bucks? even at 200 it's pretty pricey. It looks kind of big too. I'm guessing the DS will come out lower in cost. Plus it plays old Gameboy games. This is one situation where I think Nintendo really has a superb edge.
This reminds me of the Nintendo/Sega battle. PSP will no doubt be better technically, I think, but the price and the lack of titles at the onset may hurt it. What would be reallty interesting is if the media for the PSP were compatible w/the nextgen PS3. I don't think that's the case but it would certainly give it an edge if it tied into its other products.
Still, I'm not a big fan of Nintendo. Their lack of networking support is a big annoyance. I was suckered into buying one of their network adapters, but there are no games for it. I really hope this doesn't continue for their next line of products.
I would actually say that playing poker w/others is the only way to beat the house pretty consistently, though. However, this is not always the case, and Vegas is loaded with ringers who will be happy to take your money as they teach you this fact. Plus, the casinos get a rake, so if you're not good enough to overcome the rake (very very few are) then you're probably screwed - ie. Dead Money.
You can win if you know how to play the people and know things like pot odds, and carefully choose which cards to play.
If you play certain hands and avoid dumb, loser hands, you can usually beat anyone at a home game of poker. But in a Casino? I don't like my odds of coming away with any money playing people at a Casino in Vegas.
Personally, I wouldn't know why so many people would play WSOP. I'm sure the majority got in through satellites and such, but still, to me that's like throwing money at a brick wall if you haven't played (and won) in a bunch of tournaments first.
People talk about how poker is a game of luck, and sure, chance is involved. But more importantly, it's a game of people. The better you play an opponent, figure out his strategies, the way he bets, etc, the better you'll do at poker. All the other games in Vegas are playing against the house, and that's a losing proposition.
I'm lookin at the screenshots. Is it just me or does every other Final Fantasy title released now feature a thin androgenous blonde-haired boy with a surfer haircut? It's like they're trying to recreate Cloud from FFVII.
"After careful consultation with my administration's junk scientists, we have expanded our Axis of Evil to include the earth's axis as well. This rogue, um, thingy is responsible for the destruction of...does this thing say turtles? These weapons of magnetic disruption must be stopped at all costs."
Dr. Evil: So you're saying this is caused by a core of liquid hot Mag-ma?
Number One: Yes, Dr. Evil, apparently the earth itself is changing.
Dr. Evil: Number One, what else do you have for me?
Number One: Well, the magnetic disruption has created an entirely new breed of ill-tempered sea bass.
Dr. Evil: About frickin time.
Yep. They could show you what it looks like, but your puny mortal brain wouldn't possibly be able to comprehend.
I imagine it'd be hard to box up.
"Hey Frank, where'd you put that last one?"
"Damnit, slipped into the fucking fourth dimension again. That's the tenth one today!"
"42."
"Who said that?"
(sound of laughing mice)
none of them look particularly interesting. Maybe the winner, but some of them look like those old Tiger handheld games.
It's cool to see an interest in homebrew games, I guess I'm not all that impressed by what I saw. Maybe they play better, too.
I'll hold off judgement until I try one out, though.
I don't remember who was in it, but it was called something like the Doomsday gun, and was a made-for-TV movie.
Pretty entertaining, actually. Not the best of movies but fairly good for a TV movie.
Somehow I suspect this guy might have some trouble travelling anywhere now....unless he can ride on his cruise missile.
Maybe they should have entitled this article 'Dr. Simpson, or How I Learned to Love the Cruise Missile.'
"You can't fight in here, this is the War Room!"
GWEN: What is this thing? I mean, it serves no useful purpose for there to be a bunch of chompy, crushy things in the middle of a hallway!
...
GWEN: We shouldn't have to do this. It makes no logical sense! Why is it here!
JASON: Because it's on the television show.
GWEN: Well, forget it! I am not doing it! This episode was badly written.
GWEN: Whoever wrote this episode should die.

Let's see: Pros
1) Not hated by the world
2) Speak mostly English
3) Hockey
4) Weaker music industry lobby.
5) Lower Crime Rate
6) No Bushes
Cons:
1) Cold
2) Curling
3) French-speaking People
4) French-speaking People
Not much of a decision here.
