Why can't they just fix the planes? It is much harder to spot someone leaving something on. I sometimes leave my cell phone on on planes, I just forget that it is in my hand luggage.
The old Ethernet AUI connectors were awful (for thick, yellow, original Ethernet). I remember seeing a Byte article revisiting Ethernet 10 Years On. They spoke to the original designers and asked what they would do nowadays. One interesting thing was that if they had made the MAC address 64 bits then they would not have had to allocate them, they could have been chosen at random.
Anyway, the guy that designed the AUI socket said that he regretted it and apologised to everyone!
Corewars was a great game that I used to play. It has been greatly updated now, but essentially you write a program in a simple assembler that moves around in memory and hopes to crash another program that is moving around trying to crash yours.
"At the end of each turn the server will send an individualized reply to each player showing what happened to all robots during the turn.
The format of the response is list of robot updates. Each robot update is of the form #robot_id and then the actions in the order they happened. A robot is listed if and only if it was alive at the beginning of the turn. The following actions are possible:"
I think that the protocol needs to be updated a little. How do we know when the end of the list of robots is reached?
The Science Museum in London has the only Spark Gap Transmitter licence in the UK. You can press a button to transmit a message using the spark, to a receiver across the corridor.
There are so many Java programmers and so much Java code being produced that it will last a lot longer than five years. People still need Cobol programmers, ok so not mainstream but look how long ago that was designed and despite being crappy it is still here.
But as the article says it really doesn't help when people who should know better say "Java? No one is doing that now. Microsoft is no longer supporting it."
Unfortunately when we could no longer use Orbz we switched to using another database. I wonder how many other people switched and will not switch back. Quite a few I should imagine.
There is also the problem of getting code from the net and from people unrelated to the University. When I worked in a Comp Sci department in a college of The University of London we would sometimes run reports and thesis submissions against AltaVista and Google; usually if we thought that the student had far exceeded expectations.
One student was caught because the person in the States that the student commissioned to write his final year project for him complained to the University that the student hadn't paid him. We checked into it and the student was expelled.
So this new Carnivore feature will only be able to spy on those people who can't put protection on their computers and can't keep their computers up-to-date.
In light of the Sept 11th terrorists' acts, I think that we can assume that the main people that Carnivore wants to target will not be suseptible to this magic lantern.
First of all, I would like to point out that my parents told me that our television was broken when I was a youth. They thought that it would have a bad influence on me. The endless, mindless drivel infecting my soul and turning me into a zombie.
Obviously, this is totaly ridiculous. But, that does not mean that television is evil to watch. Now that I have a television, yes I do get turned into a zombie, but such is life!
Not only is it conceivable that someone (other than Sat*n himself) enjoyed the film but many actually did, as evidenced by the comments above. Snatch was great fun, as was LS&2SB. How about suspending your disbelief for a while, take the film as it was meant to be taken and have fun.
BTW. Does the * in Sat*n save me from eternal damnation?
Hi Janis,
Great article.
Have you really never made any money from your album sales through stores? What about your first albums?
At what level do you think artists actually make money?
Thanks
Nine Grammy nominations does not seem to equate with lesser known. What would you call those with no nominations?

Gates has a lot to answer for.

17 months of power?
Great for California but think of the global warming when everyone starts to use it and can't give a damn about wasted energy.
If they "are familiar with the matter" there must be something there :-)

so I can keep dinner guests out of the computer room!
This would be ideal for robot soccer competitions. "GO THE ANTS!"
It was a lot of fun to participate in the Seti@home project and a worthy cause for spare cpu cycles. Sign me up Scotty.

Sounds like a waste of time to me.
Does anyone remember the Osbourne?
