What did americans do when England controlled everything from oversea? When england reaped all the profits, all the land, and so on? What do u do when the head of your elected (or not) gov' get murdered by the CIA (see: Nigeria 1976, Angola 1961) for oil reasons, When western companies rape your land or outright kill you (Bophal/Union Carbide anyone? Ooohhh sorry u forgot about that, can't blame u, just a bunch of indians...), when the US try to thwart your fight for freedom (the USA didn't like very much ANC, for exemple)? What do you do when you're *not* a US citizen, unlikely to ever be one, so you can't vote out the politics you don't like? Maybe you could share with all the stupid people out there what you think they could/should do (and, no, becoming US citizens isn't an answer) instead? I'd be glad to read your solution, 'cause i'm no terrorist and i'd like to find a peaceful way to fight:P
oh well, i'll bite. What would be an acceptable way for an educated 3rd world citizen to protest strongly against, say: USA foreign policies, USA oil companies policies, USA interventions to overthrow regularly elected foreign governments who happen to not follow the US line, and so on? For a US citizen, the way is to vote. But for a non-US citizen? Part of the problem is globalism. We have globalism of effects (US, or EU, or whatever can have deep effects on foreign countries), yet those countries' citizen can't have a say on those politics which are applied to them. For all practical purposes, it looks very much like a dictatorship. And there aren't many "civilised" ways out of a dictatorship.
now i can see it... i take Open Office, and i add into it an Adobe eBook import/export filter, which will handle the nasty cracking business... Or better: use mplayer, and include DeCSS right at the core of it, right next to the MPEG codec. those both pieces of software would have substancial non-infringing use, and should be safe of prosecution?:-)
oh, well.. i had a quick look at TINRA, and it seems to be aimed at videos(especially.rm to.avi), and i'm not an AV codecs hacker, oh, well.. I'll have a look, through, maybe i can pull this off in a few years, so don't wait for me;-P
well, yes there is one single reason that's good enough. Most IRC servers i know don't *require* identd if you have *one* irc session opened. They do *require* it if you want to have several sessions coming from the same IP, through. It is aimed at shell accounts boxes, those providing BitchX/BNC/eggdrop connnectivity to IRC.
Will this allow me to transform the.ra &.ram lying around on my HD into, say,.ogg, or.mp3?:-).. I Tried with ffmpeg without any success so far.. Seems there are a few Whine-dose solutions, but i'm looking for a scriptable Unix one..:-/
heat is transfered by basically two means: convection and radiation. Convection is the bulk of heat transfer. Convection is when something hot is in contact with something cold, like water, air, copper. Space is a biiiig nothing, thus, no convection. U can *fry* in space, because of the sun's radiations.
[3] For example, there was a need to reduce the MTU parameter of the TCP/IP interface. There was no command available to make the change, but the code in the network stack was easy to find, modify (one line) and rebuild.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the WHOLE fuckin' point in OpenSource, so casually admitted in a MS Engineering Doc.
yeah, but to see that, he would have had to click on the [+] thingie, yeah, the one next to Frequently Asked Questions and that's waaaaaay to technical for a windows user...
ok, i apologize for the sarcasm, fact is i got quite pissed off by several other comments from this thread, and i misread yours. Nonetheless, the US society, like many industrialised country's, does have a widening span between the "middle" class and the "upper" one, a gap that once could be jumped (the 'self made man'), but this is becoming increasingly difficult. As for nanotech', ah, i so wish you'd be right, but i fear you won't... You'll see, there will always be a gap between the middle class and the upper one, and the later will want it to stay that way.. and they'll have their ways, bare maybe a revolution. You want to bet that you won't be able to build a nanotech' assembly with a nanotech' assembly? Not because of technical difficulties, but because this would mean you'd be able to *give* one to your neighboor (ah, the horror!)... Besides, seeing nanotechnology as the end of scarcity is wishful thinking. You want to bet on how it would work? Well, let's say you want the same fine gold-plated watch as your neighboor. First, you'll have to get your hand on that gold, 'cause i don't think nanotech will mean you'll be able to turn lead into gold (not until they find some philosopher's stone, mind you), then you'll need to feed your assembly with the schematics of this watch... What are the chances they'll be free? non. Your nanotech assembly will be controlled by a DRM system, and you'll have to buy the rights for the plans, and probably won't be able to use those more than, say, 2 times (ie: build 2 watches). U'll teel me, well, there''ll be GPL plans, but my bet is you won't be able to use those on anything othr than illegal nanoplants, because DRM and digital certification will be mandatory, to prevent you from building, say, a H Bomb in your basement. And this will allow to maintain an artificial scarcity, because, see, what's the point in owning a rolls royce, if everybody as one (basic trait of humanity).
I had to look up OHIP....essentially it looks like government run (meaning paid for by the sweat of others) health care. Basically, some people have to do without things they might otherwise have, so that that others can get OHIP (as is the case with any type of government hand-out).
yep, i'm sure all the guys suffering from heart diseases, cancer, AIDS, or who've had a car accident, or whatever, should pay themselve for all their (very) expensive treatments.. and if they can't afford those, well, they deserve to die, right? I mean, come on, if they can't pay, it means they outlived their usefulness to society, since they begin to cost (in OHIP) more than what they're worth (income is a good index, uh? since that's what they'll need to pay for their lives..), so, you say, SHOOT THEM !@# i do agree with you, especiallly in your case, when you'll get old, and you won't work anymore, you'll just be as worthless as the child gunned down next door, who doesn't deserve to live either..
you're right, last time i checked, i couldn't help but notice that the homeless next door was better dressed and groomed than bill gates. I'm sure he gets to eat better food, will live longer, and since he lives in the streets, he has faaaaaaaaar more living space than bill. yup, you're totally right.
ah, well.. there's no such thing as property rights without government indeed, just like copyrights in fact.. so, yes indeed, why not tax at 100% everything above a billion $, for example, or 100 millions $, like another poster suggested..:-)
ah, you mean that if i have a monopoly on water distribution and decide to charge you 200$ per gallon, you'll stop bathing?:-) ah, sorry, u already don't bath, my mistake..:-P
u mean that the bill gates has several billions more voices than the homeless next door to you in how your country should be run? I fail to see the point in all the Microsoft bashing, then.. after all, they're just good US capitalists, voting with their dollars?:-)

why would the 3rd generation open source developers be excluded? MS can take the whole of FreeBSD and sell it as Windows Stable-At-Least, does that mean that FreeBSD wouldn't be around anymore? how? They'd erase the CVS Tree and hunt for all CD's lying around? care to explain?:-)

well, i guess we would have to send all the americans in the sun too, then, since they supported afghan guerilla and osama (trained by CIA, remember?)
