    That's part of it, but it actually makes sense on so many more levels; for example:
    Oh well. We didn't pay for it anyway, so we shouldn't care too much about security.
    Windows Update will prevent some of the most common pirated keys from letting you get security (and other) updates. Check.
    We'll fix it ourselves.
    Dean Edwards' IE7 compliance patch. Check.
    Oh, there's no regression testing. Who cares? We'll do that ourselves.
    Regression testing comes from the users, as history has shown time and time again. Check.
    But once you start writing a check, you now have demands, and rightfully so.
    No kidding, so step up to the plate. Check.

    Consensus? Pot. Kettle. Black.

    The about:config setting extensions.disabledObsolete seems to default to true. Try setting this to false instead.

    Was there ever an official response from Google to even entertain the notion that they are actually pissed about this? I remember the story about some whiney guy bitching about Google blocking his notifier, but it was all chalked up to being an authentication problem on his end that triggered their graphic verification routine.

    The products they produce to support the development of php the closed source.
    This is part of the problem. While this isn't in itself a terrible practice, it does leave esoteric developers who prefer other different architectures out in the cold.
    There is nothing wrong with this business model, get over it.
    Exactly. It's not that we always want free beer, we just like to make sure that we can drink as much as everyone else. Now, if you could request a cross-compilation for a different architecture at no additional cost with the license, then we'd all be impressed.

    And you can tell they don't want to admit it because it's named Windows Services for UNIX. UNIX Services for Windows is more correct, but they want you to believe that Windows is empowering UNIX instead of the other way around.

    Nah, Gentoo is a smart move. Especially if you have the time and patience for a stage 1 install. I actually think more people should give it a try. Your comment was on an upward trend and I just recalled what blackmonday said 4 stories prior and thought I'd rehash it.

    It's more about giving you a visual queue as to what the window contains as opposed to being able to read the contents comfortably. Think about the progression:
    Text -> Icon -> Pager -> Angled Window
    Each one gives more insight as to what's a particular window does than the previous incarnation. Make sense now?

    If you want backwards compatibility, use a Win2k emulator.
    That's an excellent point. Microsoft has created a beast that can't be satiated. *n[ui]x, on the other hand, is extended by the community. Perhaps WINE will become a major safe haven for people trying to escape DRM and other backwards compatibilty disabilitating upgrades; all without sacrificing real upgrades that users want, since WINE is constantly gaining robust changes. Perhaps this is the push needed to get *n[ui]x into the mainstream; and ironically, it'll be provided by Microsoft.

    Charamel is pretty nice. It's a dual theme for both Firefox and Thunderbird. I've been using it for the last couple of days, and it supports the new extensions for Firefox 0.9 and Thunderbird 0.7. It's definately worth checking out!

    Regardless, just the attempt should be commended. This will provide a very keen insight into the origins of UNIX if enough key people contribute. This wiki will more than likely end up as the official family tree reference for UNIX.
