Google should just stop serving Verizon.

    Google should just buy Verizon.

I'd wager that the SCO debacle had more slashdots to its credit, but it would be interesting to see a chart of the top issues posted about on here in the last 5 years or so.

We have these urinals at work and they are fine. No smell, clean enough (they need to be wiped down regularly by the cleaning people because without constantly running water, there's nothing whisking away the urine that his the wall of the urinal before going down the drain).

They are a good idea, I think and have not been a problem for us.

That damn well deserves +5 insightful.

Pose the following question to any individual on the planet: What problem deserves more immediate attention? Illegally sharing music or illegally sharing child pornography?

While record execs would argue the former, no one could *honestly* say that.

But it's just like you said. Until the record execs can profit from eliminating child pornography from p2p networks (which they clearly have some level of influence on), they are not interested in fighting the good fight.

No one says vim is user friendly. It's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be powerful, and it is. It's hard to learn and it probably always will stay with 1% of the market share but I don't think the developers really care for increasing market share. Remember...it's free in every sense.

And in reply to the troll before you:

vim does have mouse support (:set mouse=a) in both terminal and, obviously, gui modes.

Also, :set wrap will solve your other qualm.

I'd recommend looking at the PEAR Coding Standards. I find that most of the styles of coding that I developed on my own are similar. I changed a few of my habits to conform with PEAR's standard. I don't necessarily ever plan on submitting code to the project, but I like to have a written rule and it's a decent rule, fwiw. Personally, I would like to see these guidelines adopted as industry-standard php coding style, but whatever.

    So, yeah, check that out.

I agree, though for different reasons. I don't care what this guy does with his spare time...it's just that every single piece of fiction (book, movie, whatever) that I have read/seen that was based on computers and technology has always sucked. I find everything so horribly cheesy and exaggerated and make-believe. Knowing about the stuff makes it hard to enjoy seeing it done in a second-rate fashion.

Examples: swordfish, takedown, the list goes on.I would be astonished (and pleased, don't get me wrong) to see a film based on computer technology that was accurate and didn't try to sell itself on some overused buzzwords (like "open source" in the film Anti-Trust)...

  14. foundation! on What Makes Great Science Fiction? · · Score: 1

I finally just started reading Foundation, chronologically starting with Prelude to Foundation, and so far I am amazed. Asimov managed to tell the story without really getting entrenched in science fictional ideas while keeping the story involving. With whomever made the post about shallow character development,I would have to strongly disagree. At least so far, the character development has been core to at least the central characters. Again, since I am starting with prelude, which was written long after the series began, my opinions could change in the future. But for now, chock it up as my favorite.

I haven't seen mention yet of the Stephen R. Donaldson "Gap" series (ie. Gap Into Conflict, Gap Into Vision, etc). That was a terrific series.

Oh, and Blue/Red Mars. But now I digress.
