here in the uk it is slightly different. The police have the power to bring someone in for questioning at the say so of a rape victim.

Craig Charles (lister in Red Dwarf) was accused of rape and found innocent, but for a while he had a lot of trouble finding work.

"The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers." (Leia to Tarkin. How many times has the plucky revolutionary said something similar to the dictator in numerous other settings?)

Matt Groenig (simpsons and futurama) said that the secret of great sci-fi is that it isn't really about the future or the past (or another dimension, etc.). It's about the present.

Putting modern day situations into a sci-fi setting is what good sci-fi story telling is all about. For example watch Star Trek 6 The Undiscovered Country (arguably the the third best trek movie, although it does get very cheesy at the end) and see how many references to the cold war you can spot (the film tried to mirror recent events with the soviet union in the early 90's). The film starts with the explosion of the Klingon energy production moon of Praxis, this represents the chernobly disaster, and this is just the first of many references in the film.

  5. Re:Seasons 5 and 6 on Best Sci Fi Currently On Television? · · Score: 1

yeah, I think we'll have to agree to disagree, series 6 was the best in my opinion.

But your right about the bad episodes being watchable, I saw an episode from series 7 recently (the one with the virus and lister has to amputate his arm) and that was quite funny.

Virus (to kryten): hey give that man an eyebrow, wait I'm feeling generous, give him two

  6. Re:Red Dwarf on Best Sci Fi Currently On Television? · · Score: 1

personally I think that series 5 and 6 were the best (you seem to totally ignore them).

While it isn't as good as it was, series 8 was a lot better than 7. I reckon that if they hadn't brought kochanski back then both 7 and 8 would have been a lot better as well.

people do seem to ignore the first two series mainly because it was a different style. This is unfortuante because there is some classic stuff...

Lister : rimmer are you awake ?
Rimmer : yes mum, i'm just packing my satchel

Did you know that the BBC originally planned to axe it after the first series but they had alreadly commisioned the second and spent loads of money on it.

I have been using rc1 2505 for a couple of days and I am quite impressed.

My compy has always been a bit skitzy but now games that didn't work do (and yes I have used both 9x and 2000). I'm willing to put up with big buttons, bright colours and a less efficient control panel for that.

It also seems silly that people are critiscing them for removing the jvm and keeping IE. Both products have to compete in their field and if they don't do the job then they can be replaced by rival products.

Also AFAIK you don't have to have ms passport to access any key features (including windows update).

I agree, the ending of POTA is a classic and certainly one of the best in the history of cinema.

On the other hand Tim Burton seems confident in the interviews I've seen and he is very talented. Anyone know when it is released in the UK ?.

But this is what mp3 sharing is about. Your britney and your more obscure dance/indie/folk/other (delete as applicable to you) are on the same playing field, both just one search away.

It basically tries to eliminate the need for marketing. And hopefully the more talented artists will come out on top because the studios will go out of business.

  12. Re:Greenhouse effect vs. global warming on Planning For The Colonization Of Mars · · Score: 1

What would b really useful is if we could transport some of Earth's water to mars.

This would *help* solve the problem of rising sea levels, and would be considerably easier than trying to find ice asteroids in space and sending them to mars.

The problem with this is that geting the water from the Earths surface into space is expensive and dangerous.

This is bit is a little off topic I know but does anyone else think that NASA should abandon spaceflight in it's current form (i.e. Rockets) ?.

I would like history to record the 20th century as the time when costly rockets got us into space when space exploration was in it's infancy. And then I would like history to record the 21st century as the time when space flight became cheap, safe and quick. When people regarded going into space in the same way as we regard a long haul airplane flight today.

Basically there has to be a better way of escaping the Earths atmosphere surely. A lot of people think that the only reason that NASA persists with shuttles and rockets is because it is good for the american aerospace industry and the american airforce.

What about giant elevator like you see in sci-fi films. Let's face it, anything that doesn't involve sitting on top of several tons of rocket fuel would do.

I love that film, it is very relevant to this subject. But I think the most important point is that there are so many possibilities for misuse of this information that no one has worked them all out. I've heard ideas ranging from the far fetched (the russia mafia gets the award for most paranoid) to the very likely (insurance companies using it against you). If we could guarantee total non corruption then it might be viable. But corruption exists everywhere so we would just be creating the potential for more crimes on top of the ones this database is supposed to solve. By the way I am a UK citizen so this does affect me.
