An example might be that goat.ce page (or whatever the url is) might get linked to a lot as example of bad taste (I seen a few pages that link to it and describe the page urging people not to visit it), which fine except that this web site is now getting linked to (or voted for which is how the google algorithm treats a link) yet it isn't a particularly good or informative website.

Even if someone was searching for something on bad taste, that page is not really an authoritive page about bad taste just an example of it.

I really like The Spirits Within, it has it's problems but it deserved to make money.

The worst thing is that this will probably put the big studios off making serious feature length CGI films for the time being (and unfortunately the big studios are the only ones in the financial position to make such films, as FF:TSW proves).

Oh well, we are stuck with Toy Story and A Bugs Life for a while.

'There is a premium on sharpness of mind and the ability to accumulate money. Such people tend to have more children and have a better chance of survival,' he says. In other words, intellect - the defining characteristic of our species - is still driving our evolution.

Is this true ?, I thought that in modern western society it is the less well educated and poorer families that tend to have the larger families (maybe this is just a stereotype).

Surely we could work out the course of our evolution by looking at which parts of society have the most kids (and therefore pass on their genes and dominate the genepool). We need some kind of definitive study on modern reproduction to tell us for sure where we are going.

Also there are still people who don't pass on their genes at all, their genes are removed from the genepool. Surely this means we are still evolving, just a hell of a lot slower than in times gone past (considering that evolution is pretty slow anyway this might neglible).

  11. Final Fantasy The Spirits Within on History of SquareSoft · · Score: 2, Interesting

Anyone else really like the film ?

I thought it was great, ok the story wasn't perfect but I thought it was enjoyable. And this summer wasn't exactly great for movies was it ?, (the only other summer movie I enjoyed was the planet of the apes remake) I really think this should have done better at the box office.

BTW in the article it says the film only took $80 million and cost $140 million, but that $140 million doesn't include the money spent on publicity which I read was at least another $20 to $30 million worldwide. So the film did very badly (even waterworld made money thru video and tv rights but it is doubtful that FFTSW ever will).

The really sad thing is it will probably put the studios off making cgi films aimed at adults as the only successful ones have been for kids (shrek, toy story, etc.). But I think the potential for a truly great cgi film with an adult film is huge.

Windows is good for home users and workstations, xp is actually quite good, but there is enough reactionary backlash against MS that even if they did manage to release a perfect windows os in the next few years *nix and other os's wouldn't just dissapear overnight (or even 20 years I suspect).
