It would appear that the DOJ is dictating some of the interface engineering that M$ will be doing for the next 5 years or so. I had hopes that the "start button" and the metaphor of the desktop would be replaced before 2005.
VA Whatever won't be around much longer regardless of name changes. The sad thing is, at this time,/. persists when a much higher quality site gets the shaft. Typical of the poor decisions and lack of vision that have made VA what it is.
Tell that to the 386's and 486's that still boot up DOS 5.0 or so and run POS, heating, lab automation, etc. software. They're everywhere, running software that either doesn't run as well (or at all) under Windows or where running the app from autoexec.bat was an integral part of the project design.
I assume you've already gotten emails from individuals asking for specs so they can submit an RFP. I assume you haven't tried guru.com, too.
This is a good opportunity for somebody to put together a site for codeteams (in fact, you could even register codeteams.com) for displaced/unemployed IT professionals who are familiar with open-source software to get together and supply talent and solutions in ad-hoc groups for companies like this.
Why, if you want a set-top mp3 player (why I have no idea) don't you just buy an Apex DVD player and burn mp3's on CDs? It works quite well. And why, if you need a router, don't you just BUY one? There's plenty out there that are actually DESIGNED to be routers, and some are very good deals.

This thing is too much like all those other "hackable" things, i-o's in particular. You waste time and effort on a cheap piece of garbage, and for what? A crummy web browser you can use with an unstable NIC? An oversized, hacked up MP3 player? I'd take a stock Palm III any day over a hacked Audrey.
If you had an iopener (like I do) you'd know that they fall far short of being a "networkable small desktop." After you hack it, you're left with a underpowered x terminal with a crappy screen. Mine mostly collects dust, unless somebody comes by who says "what's that computer thing with the hard drive duct-taped to the back". I suspect most people's io's and similar just collect dust, as io-linux and resources for similar devices tend to die quickly.
Why don't you concentrate on trying to get first posts, you'll get one someday.
Google removes much of the noise for you, but it can't completely remove the heat and leave the light (speaking of memes), even in technical newsgroups there's a lot of flame, reply to flame, repeat, although it may be slightly more civil than "5KR00 J00 F4GZ!" alt.flame posts. There's only so much you can cancel.
I recently bought a "new internet computer" (NIC)to try putting some thin client theory into practice, and based on it I think a networkable small desktop has much greater utility than a dedicated internet appliance.

Google can do all that stuff, and a bit more, it's just a different syntax, and it's THE spot to search Use(less)net, and the cache is an incredibly useful resource, including for seeing how the/. ministry of truth modifies things without notifying users when it makes them look bad (ooh, byebye karma!). For starters, try http://www.google.com/advanced_search
I wish search engines would update links like every 100th time somebody clicks on them, that way the popular sites would be refreshed often.
That is funny, but hunting ducks generally requires birdshot, not buckshot.
Buckshot is larger shot, and is generally only useful for larger game. It was originally produced for hunting deer, hence the "buck" in buckshot. When wingshooting, you need less projectile force to bring down your target, and it's helpful to have a large, dense shot cloud, as ducks and many other gamebirds tend to fly sort of quick and be relatively small, and that means smaller shot.
Also, in America at least it's generally unlawful to hunt migratory birds with lead and other toxic metals, especially around bodies of water (supposedly ducks eat spent shot and die of lead poisoning or something). Popular non-toxic game loads include steel, bismuth and tungsten-iron alloys. Only steel shot AFAIK is readily available in traditional buckshot sizes, but I don't think there are safe standards yet for buck-size steel loads, and you'd need to be careful how you choked it. Even if it was safe, many areas regulate the size of shot you can use on migratory birds.
Anyway, even if you wanted to shoot #4 buckshot (basically the smallest) at ducks, it'd generally be unlawful.
I'm not a hunter, BTW, I generally prefer clays to organisms. The only things I've even thought about hunting are squirrels (aka tree rats), crows (they do damage to crops), pests, overpopulated predators (coyotes are a problem in this area), and poodles.
Actually, Intel and other x86 mfgs have instructions in their microcode to run Quake about 15% faster than other programs, this can be demonstrated easily by renaming win.com to quake.com (on most Windows systems). You'll notice applications start up quicker and your mouse pointer has been replaced with crosshairs. Some systems will require you to select a skill level as soon as you start Windows, be warned that if you choose "Nightmare" keyboard shortcuts will be disabled and applications do about double the damage they would normally.
Water more or less cooperates and is predictable in terms of transmitting information (in this case sound); a large heterogeneous network is anything but predictable.

Let's say the servers and bandwidth are $10K a month. Add four employees at $72K/year including benefits and overhead for another $24K.
The following is not flamebait: THIS SITE SHOULD NOT COST $24K/month! There are providers who will give you GIGS of transfer a month for $250/month on 4 NICs (good for at least 200K concurrent connections with GOOD software and well-formed pages)! There are not 4 people here who DESERVE $72K/year for this site! You know why? THERE IS NO ORIGINAL CONTENT ON THIS SITE other than what is POSTED. One guy using good "storytelling" software (which Slash isn't) and outsourcing the server/bandwidth should be able to admin and edit a site like this in his spare time.
#1 congrats on dancing to the beat of the K5 drum. What's next, voting on all submitted articles? Stories that are more than 30 words?
#2 I know of several ISPs that will host a site like this for about $50/month with a 3 gig transfer limit per month. There's CJ "original poetry" sites that make about that, and amazon affiliates that have hymns and guitar tab for hymns that make almost double that! Granted, that doesn't get you a rack full of NFS and mysql servers and a SAN, but you wouldn't need it if you correct point 3:
#3 This "software" sucks. If half the people spent half the time they've spent on this perl mess devoting their effort to Nuke and PHP, Nuke would be incredible. Nuke is about 50 times better than Slash now, it could be much, much better with lille effort.
#4 Taco and friends need to get more honest with themselves. VA is dead, the bubble has burst, internet advertisers have figured out that ads on sites like this never were worth what you all were asking. This is business karma, folks, the market is modding your CPM down to (-1 Overrated).
Don't worry, you guys can still get honest jobs when VA goes belly-up, I hear there's still a couple shops out there who have perl programmers on the payroll. Or, you could go back to school. Take an English class or two if you're thinking about a foray into anything resembling journalism again.
I didn't finish reading the thread, but he should have answered the following:
1) Whose legal opinion (in other words, somebody with legal background, or AC?) If you seek a legal opinion from a lawyer, you own that opinion, and you should be able to use their name or the name of their firm if somebody asks where it came from.
2) What is the argument backing up the opinion?
3) Citations to back up the argument: statute or CFR.
It's like a office equipment technician saying "due to a 'legal opinion' I'm no longer going to service photocopiers that could be used to counterfeit money, as there could be legal implications for me." If you're going to screw a bunch of people who have contributed to your project, the very least you can do is allow rebuttal against this "legal opinion."
AC is either in political statement mode, or CYA mode, neither are benefitial to the linux user and developer community. This sort of BS can easily be spun towards "linux not ready for enterprise deployment" land.
Furthermore, AC can not "censor" anything. That's a function left to governments. If he got a court order saying "do not release security-related portions of the changelog" that would be censorship, without the court order it's AC interpreting the law, or incorrectly interpreting legal advice, or being political, or ass-covering.
As a final PS, if I do diffs between the sources to figure out what changes were made that he suppressed from the changelog...he's making ME violate the DCMA by his definition! Thank you AC, on behalf of everybody in the US who uses linux. You sure showed us.
It was bought from Harriet Carter or somebody similar, try looking on their site or the "as seen on TV" sites. It's called the "phone valet" or "personal call screener" or something like that, I think.
