Which is now /.'ed you would know the author was arguing the point against the hardware people putting buffer overflow checks in hardware for essentially a software design problem.

He was saying that warnings, etc. need to require the programmer to fix errored code (ie, gets() vs fgets()). Like code optimization, security needs to be a low level function of a runtime/compiler.

It is a different take on an old problem. If you don't like it simply don't read it. However, since you waste time posting redundant posts about redundant articles I figured it was right up your alley.

Actually it's an excellent product. Granted the Mac Version is better (amazing by how much), but it is in my opinion the best office suite available. My only complaint is the price.

I like OpenOffice as well, however I never use any features that would conflict between OO and MS Office with the exception of passwords. However, you should never use an MS password if what your storing is actually important. Downloading cracking tools is very easy and free (astalavista.box.sk). Real encryption is necessary for critical documents/spreadsheets not the garbage built into access/excel/word. I've cracked so many competitors stupid presentation info it's sad really that they trust adding a password at all (pdf's as well).

MS Office is great but overkill for my company so we just use OO and it works well and is missing any license violations/bsa audits.

    2. The relapse of a disease or symptom. Also called recidivation.

Something like 90% of rapists and child molesters will commit the same crime after release. 10% of murders will do the same. I'd rather see murders counseled to find the cause behind the murder and have them re-released if they are found to have a conscience, understanding of why it was wrong and pass a litany of tests before release. Rapists and Molesters generally affect 20-30 people before they are caught where a murder is only perpetrated once.

I would rather live next door to a guy who came home to find his wife having an affair and killed them both in the heat of the moment than a guy who molests children and is "supposedly" reformed. There is a reason you have sex offender registries and not murder registries.

Time is worth exponentially more than money to you when you become a manager of a company or own your own company (I own 2 companies and work for 2 more). My time is worth more than being a sysadmin. Trying to do that in addition to everything else I do is bothersome. Spending $500/$1000 for a copy of OS X Server for a $3000 Power Mac G5 is well worth it to me. Admining my linux boxes are easier than my windows boxes to an extent. The level of understanding and work I have to do to stay up with what the hell needs to be updated for my linux boxes is far greater than checking for SQL Server, Windows 2000 Server (technet & windowsupdate), and any other software running on a windows box. If Linux were more concise I would choose it hands down. However, since OS X Server comes with Postfix, Tomcat (actually the same version I use) and Sybase SQL for only a couple thousand more than a Linux box with QMail, Tomcat and Oracle it doesn't make a difference with the exception of sysadmin duties.

Note: I've been running linux since '95 and am still in shock at how far it has come as an O/S. I picked it up to learn Unix commands for a job I was applying for after graduation and have used it every since. I have 6 servers total right now and test machines from UltraSPARC's to PPC Macs running OS 9 with of course the fair mix of windows and linux boxes. I always laugh at the flame wars about this O/S is better than that O/S. They are all pretty good. If you don't believe me go load a CPM Tape on to a TRS-80 for 30 minutes or so to play pong. Or explain to me why the fucking backspace key on my Apple //e doesn't backspace!!!!

You get an MBA, you move into management and become the CIO/CTO. Happens all the time.

I wish there were a day I didn't have to be the sysadmin at my jobs. Unfortunately I am the default admin because I have the most experience and it's also why I got hired (as a systems developer).

I admin my own machines as well and the primary reason I like OS X over Linux and Windows is the Software Update. I am evaluating migrating my Linux servers running qmail/oracle/tomcat-apache to OS X Server with postfix/sybase/tomcat-apache.

For example you can have a private held company worth 10 billion, just not more than 500 shareholders or you'll have to file SEC quarterly/annual documents which eliminates the benefit of being privately held.
