...i work in the corperate arena whilst my best friend works at a university and we tend to compare notes alot.
He wants to stop working for the university, (hes a proper employee doing IT support for one of the departments, not a student doing part time work for them), due to the low wages and the large amount of politics that go on.
Where I work is bad for politics, but where he is is so much worse...
I agree. I setup up Ampache for my father a few years ago and after a few teething troubles, (this was a few years a go i think but i had to edit a few files to get it to work properly), it worked just fine.
The other thing to do would be to put some form of security on the Apache server to prevent the RIAA goons from claiming you are going to broadcast to everybody...
True, I was playing with googling for names of people I know the other night, (we've got a new boss so we were trying to find out about him).
Of the 20 or so people tried only 3 actually returned the person being searched for although some others had interesting results that were people with the same name.
I've run systems basically the same hardware setup as that and its been fine up to ~100gb of data, (how well you tune your system can make a lot of difference to the performance on this sort of setup), although I wouldn't want to go much larger than that on that sort of kit, (give me a HDS9960 over Fibre and then we can start talking reasonable size database systems).
A couple of points for the grand parent post:
1). Removing the SSA disks and replacing them online (assuming mirrored fs's) worked WAY before AIX 5.2.
2). You can have Oracle datafiles a lot larger than 2gb, just create your JFS filesystems large file enabled.
... I have been commuting through Reading station in the UK several times and have seen one or more of the arrival/departure displays running scandisk as the system reboots following a crash
... I've also been on a Virgin Atlantic 747 where theres been a problem with the onboard entertainment system and my seatback terminal as rebooted giving a pile of Linux kernel messages and displaying the framebuffer Tux image!
ah, but surely even though she filled it in she disposed of it in a bin on purpose. Her "intent" being that after reading the small print that she was not going to proceed with the application.
By someone else handing it in could it be argued that this is a case of identity theft or fraudulently obtaining credit (IANAL so don't know the terms) as someone else submitted this form to the company without her knowledge or agreement?

Well this is typical... for the first time ever a slashdot discussion linked to a site with a list of download mirrors on it and no ones posted the mirror list to the discussion despite the page now just returning MySQL errors... what ever happened to people wanting karma, (i why cant i remember the &*%$ UK mirror site address from 6hrs ago!
I've been using the Promise TX2000 for the last couple of months under SuSE 8.1 & 8.2 (once they released a kernel module for 8.2 (binary module ick!)).
I've been reasonably happy with the performance and reliability of the storage subsystem using it, (although being a paranoid sysadmin everything on the RAID array is also held on another server as well as being backed up via a third!). Personally while I am happy with the Promise card I would have prefered to go with a 3ware card as they seem to have a better specification and better driver support but the availability is not great in the UK, (and of course the cost... these are personal boxes not commercial ones.:)
I have also been using the onboard promise controller on several older (ASUS A7V133) motherboards but these are jumpered not to use RAID support (just to act as additional normal IDE ports) and then use Linux Software Raid on top as I've found it to be more reliable and produced higher performance.
If the virus is spoofing the from addresses using entries from the real sources address book then it would be useful from any notification that is sent out to include the full headers of the original message... then at least you might have a chance of working out who it is really from so you can inform them (assuming that as your address is in their address book its someone you know).
I've had quite a few bounces where the spoofed address has been mine but remarkably few actual copies of the virus hitting my antivirus and the bounces are if anything more annoying as at least the viruses themselves are delt with. I know quite a few people who could quite possibly be infected (but live sufficiently far away that I can't check myself) and there is a limit to how much instruction they can be given (they've been provided with the URLs to the relevent Symantec pages).
Firstly, I'm a sysadmin and look after various Unix systems for various customers, (i think thats vague enough not to cause any problems with management), I don't support desktops and I run Linux exclusively at home.
We don't have Linux desktops at work and whilst they would be nice we wouldn't even consider putting them on ourselves without permission from our management. To do so would at the very least be a disciplinary offense as it would be a breach of various IT and Security policies, no matter if running Linux would actually be more secure.
The relative security and ease of admin of running Linux or Windows is not the issue. It doesn't matter if running Evolution on SuSE 8.2 is better then running Outlook on an NT4 Workstation. The machines which you are using are company property and if you are using them then you are subject to the companies policies over the use of that equipment. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what you do or what you know; it doesn't matter if you support dozens of high end Unix boxes as far as the company desktop is concerned you are, right or wrong as it may be, just another user. You would not expect your mail users to come along without telling you and reinstall your Exchange server to run PrimeOS running Text/Memo (hardware incompatibilities aside!!!)...
If you have a genuine need to run a desktop OS rather than your corperate standard one then you really need to do the following:
Firstly, do you REALLY need to run it... not "I want to run Linux 'cos I like it" or "I want to run Linux because its the cool thing to do". If you can justify why you need to run Linux then you are more likely to be able to convince people of this. Document this.
Can your current desktop hardware handle what you want to do... shouldn't really be so much of a problem these days but you really don't want to be halfway through a Linux install and find something vital is proprietry and just won't work leaving you with no OS. If possible testing with a Knoppix CD and dual booting when you do install may be an idea here (just in case).
Will you be able to do everything that you are required to do at your job, i.e. can you access everything you need to access if you used an alternative OS to the one provided?
If you can tick off the above three points then speak to your manager... if you can get them around to the idea then you should be able to have a stronger case if you do try it. If possible get it in writing.
We do this to... its the easiest way to split things up.
In our rota we sit down every three months or so and work out between the people who are on the rota who wants to do which week, which works ok as long as the people on the rota are reasonable, (out of the last 5 years I've covered Christmas and New Year 4 times but then I'm a geek who never goes out and I volunteered to cover then so that people who had children didn't need to be on).
We do allow the people on the rota to decide between themselves if they want to swap weekends if they are doing something outside work which means they cannot go oncall - they have to make sure if they do this that all the documentation is updated to reflect it and the appropriate parties informed.
This idea works fine with Windows XP too... I've used a T68i combined with a 3com bluetooth card in my Dell laptop to access the web to get route planning information whilst on trips before now.
... I havent had a chance to try it under linux yet, (although the Dell does dual boot so its just a question of having time to try it out...)
I agree, I've run the TSM admin gui under Konqueror on KDE 3.1 without issues. I'd have thought that any browser with the appropriate level of Java support should work....?
