But, I'm sure it's not just me that would have to think twice or three times about installing an operating system produced by the governement agency responsible for spying on us...
Yeah I know that they more that anyone would probably be able to produce a pretty secure OS (for what's that statements worth) but, comon...
I'd have a to wait a few months on that for a good independent third party review of the entire code and daemons before I really trusted it with any of my senstive data...
Any type of cryptography that is not based on quantum theory (All encryption schemes to date) are subject to be broken. Simply because they rely on numbers as the base of the security. It is simply obsecurity in large primes and random data. This can easily be broken down if you can generate all the keys at once (as with quantum computing)... Yes public key cryptography is based on a different schema but, if you can break a PGP key in a matter of seconds then the problem is simply going back and decrypting it in the manner of public key cryptography using both needed keys (which are both easily broken w/ quantum theory computing).
If you havn't you should read a book by Simon Singh called the "Code Book" it essentially is a history of cryptography from beginning to end (e.g. quantum cryptogrophy)....
The effects of quantum cryptography is huge... Using a quantum computer would allow you to crack huge keys (everything from PGP, RSA, DES, TwoFISH, BlowFISH, etc.... anything you can think of) because of the essential basis of quantum physics...
Simply in laymen terms you can check muliple cases of a key (i.e. check 111111 and 111112) at the same time... Not just 2 keys but, how about 2 billion keys per second... This makes any key no matter how long easily crackable...
I promise you the NSA is up early this morning banging on doors at Purdue (hey the probably funded it anyway)....
Now don't fear... Even though it makes any code breakable it also inheriently creates an unbreakable code using the same theories...
So start writing all you stuff down and locking in a safe instead of encrypting it on your hard drive.... You data really isn't safe anymore...
Actually alot of the higher class strip clubs (i.e. The now defunct Gold-Club in Atlanta) didn't use cash.... Patrons purchased Gold Bucks on their credit cars and got Monopoly type money which they gave to the strippers.
So even the lowliest of the lows can use a non-cash society..
BTW... I don't know this b/c of personal experience... I'm a pre-law student that did a case study on their case.... Just clearin that one up
This gives Microsoft a great platform to stand on when they say that GPL software is flung together w/out the backing of a company that can provide the fiscal support needed to "properly" develop software...
Shame on DiskZerver (or however it's spelled) for tarnishing the GPL name w/ an obviously misguided and unplanned product... Simply gives us more motivation to create products that are good, durable and legal while still holding a GPL license.
An act of unthinkable and horrific violence was brought upon our citizens today. An act committed by cowards. An act of unthinkable magnitude. The media is wildly speculating the complete ramifications of this act. I assure you, the impact will be huge. At this point in time the Asian markets are opening at a 5% drop (The lowest level in 17 years). The fiscal impact is simply the tip of the ice burg.
Money, lives, and property are not the issue of the day (in my opinion). I personally lost friends to this tragedy and I do not wish to lower the value of human life in any fashion. In America values, ideals, and our rights have always taken a precedent over human life, and this is simply another example of this.
All that is possible must be done to bring those responsible to trial. The must be punished for their actions but, done in a legal and just way. They have infringed on the rights of countless 1000's but, this DOES NOT give us the right to remove theirs. I whole-heartedly support the death sentence for all (those responsible and those who harbor them) involved but, we as a nation must do so in a fair and just manner. If we do not do so, all the lives lost today will be for nothing. They (whomever they are) will have won and triumphed over us. They have wounded us and we will have struck ourselves the fatal blow. We cannot remove the rights of the citizens' (any citizen, victim or attacker) of this country. Doing so simple crumbles the foundation on which this country was built on.
We as American's must understand that this will take time. Tomorrow we will not wake up and see the men responsible in custody. This is for good reason. The reason we do not act out in overt aggression is because our country was founded upon the ideals against those actions. We would put ourselves on the same level as the cowards responsible.
Today at least 4 men gave their lives for a cause they believed was just. We as Americans may not believe people could do such a thing. What we must understand is that Americans do this everyday, and especially on this horrible day. So far at least 250+ men and women died attempting to rescue the victims of this act of terrorism. These are the heroes. We shouldn't speak of this horrid act; we should speak of the bravery of the countless firemen, policemen, and random people that risked their lives for the sake of saving another. This is the pride of America today. This is the silver lining to the horrid cloud that has settled over our cities.
Tonight, America sleeps, scared and confused. Tomorrow I hope America rises with a sense of unity and strength. I hope that this will be the tie that binds men and women of all ages, races, sexes, creeds, and beliefs together to help build our cities and our spirit back up higher then before.
Sleep tonight praying for unison of the American spirit. Let us not wake and demand blood but, demand justice and peace. This is what America stands for today in my heart and I hope this is what it will be when I awake from sleep tomorrow.
God Bless.
And may all those who perished today have their place in our hearts as martyrs for America and their place in heaven.
Why would anyone name an OS after (or any name even simlar) to a 80's boy band... (That is, if anyone even remebers them except for me)
A Rash of very well written viruses

Code Redux
·
· Score: 1
Along w/ Code Red (no need to explain how well this has propogated) Sircam has also caused general havoc w/ the computer's I support at work.
Yeah, it's an Outlook specific virus and now after this infection I've finally gotten my "higher up's" to get away from the Microsoft syndrome. After the intial infection, spread, and removal of Sircam I did some research and found it to be an extremly well written virus.
The intresting details: 1) Of course it does the all common spread through Outlook's address book.
Sidenote: It also attachs the last document used (gotten from the 'recent' directory) to the spread email. Which in our case luckily didn't send out any sensitive data but, more than likely could have. This also has generated a huge peak in our network traffic. (Imagine our database department (30 computers) all sending out our 200MB dBase files to every address listed)
2) Also the virus scans all of the resident HTML cache and pulls out every email address listed in it
3) Then, connects to every shared computer it can find w/ write access and infects that as well
4) And the kicker that I love so much, is that it is bi-lingual. If it detects the native systems language as Spanish it will send all the emails out en espanol.
Just a little course to those not completely familar w/ our newest addition to the viruses that plague IT specialists.
I'm sorry to announce that it my duty as an American to turn this bright and promising researcher into the DOJ.
He willing and publicly decoded a document for noble and valid scientific research by bypassing NASA's obvious security of 'offing' their out-of-date programmers.
Even though his research more than likely is important and critical to his field of expertise I must insist that no more information is published and all websites that even 'link' to his research have a gag order placed on them for assisting in the distrobution of material that was illegally extracted from well protected files...

1) A great way to stress test any resource on the internet:
Tell slashdot.org about it.
The tides of users all clicking to look at the resource will stress it far better than any commercial tool on the market today.
Hmmmm.... Does that make it an Open Source Stress Test?
2) The coined term for Slashdot pointing it's many participants to a website that can't take the traffic and falls over.
This is soon followed by discussion on Slashdot of why the story's server fell over. Someone will check Netcraft to see what OS they're running and get "+2 Informative". They will get "+4 Informative" if it's running Microsoft. Someone with the site in cache will mirror it and upload a copy to their universities server (copyright, strangely, ain't an issue).
In some circumstances the server won't go down but administrators will take drastic action and 404 the site or restrict access. This is also taken under the umbrella term of The Slashdot Effect as slashdot's responsible.
The Slashdot Effect is something like an unintentional DoS attack.
3) Very subtile variant of a Distributed Denial of Service attack and an example of a symbiosis: The Slashdot folks Flood the Target Site and get good story for that.
4) And here's the Luddite translation:
"Computer try to suck watermelon through straw, computer go boom."
5) 1. Also spelled "/. effect"; what is said to have happened when a website being virtually unreachable because too many people are hitting it after the site was mentioned in an interesting article on the popular Slashdot news service. The term is quite widely used by/. readers, including variants like "That site has been slashdotted again!" 2. In a perhaps inevitable generation, the term is being used to describe any similar effect from being listed on a popular site. This would better be described as a flash crowd.
