    When I tell someone that one of my computers (running a firewall, and so I never turns it off) has a 2 years uptime, they think I'm lying.

    Shouldn't at least firewalls be patched regularly? What kernel are you using without any security problems in the last two years?

    Which is completely wrong: We are a big company and run about 90% Office 97 and 10% Office XP. While there are some small cosmetic problems we actually have no major problems or increased support calls using those two products in parallel. Of course they all can read the other versions documents!

    Actually they are over 1000 years old since Japanese cannot be written using only chinese characters.

    For example, I don't want IE resizing my damn jpg's and png's to fit the screen every time, yet I have not found a way to turn it off.

    Easy: Go to Tools -> Internet Options... -> Advanced and just unmark Multimedia / Enable Automatic Image Resizing

    Simple: In our network we need about 4GB of space for a client system but the smallest we get is 20GB. We have about one order of a magnitude more space on client drives than in our servers...

    It's actually not that simple: XP doesn't sync the time if the date doesn't match.

    Still the attack wouldn't be worth much: Just reset date & time in BIOS and disable the NTP update (or change the server)...

    No matter what you say, Latin characters are easier to recognize and use than Chinese symbols (there are only 26 of them!).

    Reducing the symbol set is not always making things easier. Even if a binary dump of text uses only 2 symbols, it is much harder to read. Japanese for example is harder and much slower to read if transcribed using ASCII (romanji) since Japanese has a terrible lot of homophones.

    Of course this works *if* you are an American who happens to just use English.

    Writing Japanese in UTF-8 is real fun, especially searching such files using grep...

    Just one problem: What kind of files would *not* have this bit set? Actually the only one I can think of would be plain text and graphics...

    Just disable the ability to open any attachments would probably be much simpler.

    What is the logic of responding to a radio transmission with an optical one? Wouldn't it be much more promising to answer a call with the same technology? Of course they could but is it probable?

    The other points are covered by the other postings.

    I was shocked by the word stability in your posting. I used Win98 for 2 years and was pretty happy. But stability certainly isn't a positive point for it. For example I could bring down my system with Netscape Communicator 4.x as many time as I wanted. W2K on the other hand is rock solid for me (your mileage may vary), no comparision with Win98...

    In Japanese house has 10 strokes. The problem is that the strokes cannot be mapped to individual "characters" since the individual strokes have no standardized position, direction or size. To encode the strokes would take a lot of information (a bitmap would probably be easier).

    The series 500 Shinkansen actually has a top speed of 320 km/h on the current tracks (they hope to push this to 340 km/h by improving the tracks) and it's a Shinkansen that holds the world record for the fastest scheduled ride. The Shinkansen was the first high speed train when they started the service in 1964. The first TGV was 1980. Doesn't seem to have been copied to me...
