Rave on! I don't mind helping people, but I hate *having* to help people, just because they are too lazy (or even too cretinously stupid) to figure it out or listen the first time. Likewise, if I have to repeatedly help someone, or have to help them because they didn't listen to my advice, then I let them know how I feel, usually doing so in a civilized way... the first time. After that, I start charging people. I especially like lawyers asking for advice. Heh, I was a consultant once, I can play the 'billable hours' game.
That said, the people here (Indianapolis) are usually happy to take me to dinner (mmmm, Shapiro's) or barter in exchange (my neighbors tend to be plumbers, auto mechanics, electricians, carpenters, etc; if we had an HVAC guy move in the neighborhood, we'd be set) or flat out offer money. Some have even bought me dinner for just advice, and these are friends! If I lived some place like the East Coast, it might be more of an issue.
I am shocked, SHOCKED!!! I say, to hear that the person who is funding a study will get the answers they want! Why, you'll be saying that public school teachers will be talking about the importance of public education, next!
Well, not exactly. I bought a flat-panel iMac the month they came out, and I got the AppleCare with it. It was a completely new design, and I was concerned about the 'first model year' syndrome. In particular, I wondered how stable the LCD and arm would be over time.
Fortunately, it hasn't been a problem. OTOH, I had a bearing go out on the optical drive, so it was replaced for free. At the time, that was about $300 itself. And I still have a year left, in case pixels go south or whatever. Also, you get free phone help for the whole three years. For myself, the peace of mind makes it money well spent. Your mileage may vary.
Ah, nice to know that nothing's changed in 100 years. H.L. Mencken described this process as the editor of the Baltimore Herald, which went under in the wake of the 1906 fire. In fact, he described the same thing going on in his days as the editor for The Smart Set and American Mercury.
I guess we can add journalistic integrity to the list of oxymorons... as if it weren't there already.
A word of warning: I got my 10GB iPod when the options were 20GB, 10GB, and 5GB. I hemmed and hawed between 10 and 5, then decided that double the space (with the remote and case thrown in) made it worth the extra $100. Then the music store came out, and now I'm kicking myself for not getting the 20GB model.
This is a legitimate question, and the honest answer is "I don't know". I don't think anyone outside of Apple knows. However, they have been positioning themselves for a big strike at market share; certainly they are better poised for that now than, say, five years ago. In fact, one never know about this. When the iPod was introduced, I yawned like most people. Now I own one, wish I'd gotten a bigger one, and it is proving to be a "killer app" on the hardware side, when coupled with iTunes. That combination allowed them to create and dominate a market, pay for downloadable music. (Admittedly, it's still early for that market, but still.) That may be levereged for other things; who knows?
I will say this, from what I've seen Apple has the infrastructure and processes in place to make that strike, which I didn't see them having in years past.
Until you can get computers to drink on the job, get paid by businesses to write advertisement for them (a la Enron, CART, etc), and fall for any buncomb that someone says in a serious voice, then they won't exactly 'replace' journalists.
This just in: Darl McBride was seen dumping a cup of coffee on his lap at a McDonald's drive-thru and immediately sued McDonald's, Juan Valdez, that old biddy who did it in the 90s (making an infringement of SCO's copywrong), Starbuck's, DuPont as the inventor of styrofoam, British comedienne Denise Coffey, Minnesota farmer Ole McDonald, and Marvin Percolator (sole heir to the fortune).
Why would anyone shop there in the first place? I have yet to find anything of quality in a WalMart. The only reason I go to one is that it is the only convenient place near work to pick up cold medicine (which probably tells you how much I patronize them).
In truth, I try to avoid the mass-retailers like WalMart, Meijer, KMart, Target, etc. The places are just so depressing. It's not the stores or their customers per se; the employees are generally friendly and helpful, and if you are looking for something without much concern for quality, it's the place for you. However, it's the customers that bother me. I come from "the people", and "the people" suck.
In my mind, the stereotypical patron of these stores is some woman trailing five feral, snot-nosed kids, probably each with a different father. She is constantly yelling at Donnie, Bonnie, Connie, Ronnie, and Lonnie to "Shuuut uuuup" or she'll threaten them with never bringing them to this place again. "And where the hell's Johnny?!?!" These are also the kids who won't be quiet, so I often have to threaten to teach them certain words that will force Mom to quiet them. Around here, the Targets have a lower percentage of these patrons, so I prefer going there if I have to, in spite of the PitA of its location.
You know, Jeff Foxworthy was right: you don't need the Southern accent to be a redneck. What's more, you don't even need to be white.
Isn't it possible that they just haven't released the 10.2 patch yet?
No, sorry, this is absolutely not possible! There is no way that Apple would release a patch later. Absolutely none. And when I say 'absolutely none', I do mean 'a certain probability'. Afterall, they have been making security updates to 10.1 all the time that 10.2 has been around. (I know, because I have Jaguar, my father is too cheap to buy 10.2, and I keep doing the updates for him. It's not that he can't, he's just lazy.) I think that they will release an update, if only to quell the rumblings of mutiny --
"There's rumblings of mutiny."
"Really?"
"Come over here and listen."

More like Number 2, if you ask me ...

Seek help.
Now.
Right, it's "the Internal Revenue Service".
No, then the RIAA would storm you for stealing from John Mellencamp. Only Springsteen is allowed to do that.

To which I'll reply "Mmm, delicious!" while I smack my lips.
But then, I nearly always support a civilized people (ie Israel) who are fighting the inferior (ie 90% of the UN).

Yes, just my usual job, pouring oil on troubled waters ... then lightning a match.

Well, no one paying with their own money ...
"Marjorie?!"
"She's got the pope eating out of her goddamned hand!"

Or however that went.
