Now that the N900 is about to be released, your old N770, N800, and N810 become just about as useless as a kick stand on a bass boat. They are extremely low power, have USB, and just about any Debian Linux software is available.
You could plug these into a solar panel, or better yet, take the 48VAC from the phone line that is long been shut off (but is always powered) and convert that to the DC needed to keep the battery charged.
There is always something satisfying in screwing Verizon et al.
The only way I would run Windows (anything) would be inside of VirtualBox on either a Mac or Ubuntu box. Given this scenario, how much would improved multi-threading matter?
A lot of you here are to young to remember the big boat station wagons that parents would pile full of stuff and kids and head off to places like Yellowstone and the like. Many of these had rear facing seats and power rear windows. The only problem was that if you let the window down a little, the car exhaust would be sucked into the car, especially near the rear facing seats where the kids were. Now many would think this is a problem, but parents of that day, after having to listen to the little brats giggling, and yelling would crack that rear window and let a little CO in to quiet the kids down. It worked, they went to sleep, and the only drawback was a few points off the ACT scores later in High School.
M$ office vs OpenOffice.org Parallels vs VirtualBox
(Yes I used the epithet "M$"), now watch my theory that the "M$" folks have automated bots or paid shills to mod down any post containing said derogatory term.
First, I have an N95 8GB which is the best "phone" I have ever seen. Symbian is fine as long as there are buttons to push. I mistakenly bought the steaming pile of shit, that Nokia refers to as the N97. Nope, Symbian is not god for, ready for, should be used on, anything with a touch screen. This thing is a disaster. Update the OS, doest it make it any better? Nope. Symbian has hit a brick wall. N95 = good (V3) N97 = not only bad, but embarrassing for Nokia.
I think the reason Nokia is releasing the N900 is because they hit a dead end with Symbian 5 and the N97.
Development? go look at maemo.org. Everything you could want. Apple C or Java, puullleeese, it's Debian Linux with every tool you can think of.
Nokia prolly was reluctant to do this, but with the embarrassing failure of the N97 and Symbian 5, they had no choice. The N900 is light years ahead of the iPhone, or Android, and all the development choices are your. You don't have to pay or ask permission from anyone to develop in Linux.
I am wondering if the BSA's 41% is made up of software like OpenOffice.org, or VLS, or SAMBA, that they would claim contain there client's precious "IP".
I think you can lay the blame at Chicago's loss of the Olympics squarely at the feet of DHS and Customs enforcement. The USA is NOT a friendly place to visit. I wish President Obama would have put an end to this Bush era foolishness, but it seems he wanted to cuddle up with the right wing Republicans instead. Strike, one. Strike, two.
I don't help friends with computer problems on Windows machines any more, and it has strained some of my friendships. I get calls that their computer is lousy with trojans and viruses and my NEW answer it to switch to Ubuntu, and I'll help. Helping a Windows user is like giving a crack head $10 bux. The same problem is only going to happen again. It is a waste of both of our time. I have found that it is actually a good test of friendship. They call me because they think I know "something about computers". When I tell them what I would do, they decide if they actually trust my judgment and load Linux, or they don't and just wanted some one to enable their mistake for free.
Almost all child abuse is from family members. Wearing a GPS watch won't help to stop the step dad from hurting the kid. Abuse or abduction by strangers is so rare that it is hardly worth mentioning. All this does is extract money from parents and lets them pretend the danger is somewhere that it isn't.
At the time you had to go through a gate with armed military types then make your way around to the museum parking lot. Once inside, I remembered that I had forgotten to lock my car doors, and mentioned to the guard that I was going to go back out to the parking lot to do this. He looked at me and said, "Don't worry about it, your car is being watched".
In any case, I highly recommend visiting this museum if you are a geek type. from a real Enigma that you can touch, to a Cray II that you can sit on, this place is cryptogeek heaven. A truly interesting experience.
Actually I was practicing sarcasm. I know it is rare, but I like the idea of being able to see how programs work, and have control over something I have bought. I know, it isn't the way most big companies like it, but hey I'm old.
I already have an N770, N800, and an N810 so i'm both hyped and familiar with the platform. I also have an N95 8GB (great) and an N97 (steaming pile of shit).
Well, my life is just on hold waiting for the N97. My only big decision is weather to stay with the evil AT&T, or switch to the slightly less evil T-Mobile. "Dial Central" already works with Google Voice and I am out of contract so for me it's a question of better coverage (AT&T) or better price (T-Mobile).
If I want an app through http://maemo.org/ for my soon to be N900 and some one doesn't like it, what then? See OSS and Linux doesn't have this protection that Microsoft and Apple offer.
Actually "M$" is cute, funny and meaningful. I have noticed it also triggers an almost automated response by Microsoft shills (paid or not) to mod down the post, no matter what.
Interesting that a large corporation like Microsoft feels the need to work in such an evil and underhanded way.
"As a parent, I would definitively go for it.", until the Drive-Cam captured "Champaign" actively resting her head in your lap because your car was in the shop, and you just took the kid's car that day.
First sale doctrine is a RIGHT, not a "privilege". DRM makes people mad. And lastly, I think this whole 'pirate' definition is skewed. To me a pirated game is one that is copied, repackaged, and sold as if it were genuine. Getting a copy for free, trying it, and deciding you don't like it is a whole different matter. Just because some one is playing a game you developed that is a copy of one that someone bought does not in my mind mean that person would ever be a customer. Maybe he/she thinks the game is ok, but not good enough to pay for. My guess is that most people, if they really like something will buy a copy for themselves. Thinking some one owes you money for some peice of crap game just because the tried a copy is off the wall to me.
I had an N95 8GB. Wonderful phone. I bought the N97 on the 1st day. What a piece of shit. Some one over at Nokia wanted to make an iPhone experience with an Ovi app store full of useless crap you have to pay for. By crippling a perfectly good VoIP stack so Gizmo won't work. by making..... I could go on forever.
On the other hand , I have an N770 and N800 and N810 which are awesome. I always wondered why Nokia didnt use it for the high end platform.
So despite being thoroughly fuxored by Nokia on the N97, I will be 1st in line for the N900.

As the owner of an N97, let me say that Symbian V 5 is a steaming pile of shit.
The greed of the music/video industry is only exceeded by those in the oil business.
User: Vista sux
M$: Ok, we will change the name to Windows 7
User: OK, glad you listened. Im ready to open my wallet.
M$: We know.

One third of the US population cant tell "shit from shineola".

It is "memory" after all, ad Rambus thinks everyone should pay them.

Sorry I don't have any mod points. Do you work for Microsoft?

This means superconductivity is possible without any equipment just about any January day in Winnipeg MB.

Morrow Designs had an S-100 running some sort of mini-unix in the early 80's on a Z-80.

Several years ago I visited the National Cryptologic Museum at Ft Meade MD. http://www.nsa.gov/about/cryptologic_heritage/museum/

The statement "Well, my life is just on hold waiting for the N97." was meant to say N900. The N97 is/was the worst phone I have ever had.
Actually I was practicing sarcasm. I know it is rare, but I like the idea of being able to see how programs work, and have control over something I have bought. I know, it isn't the way most big companies like it, but hey I'm old.
