  1. Exactly!!! If it bothered the french so much, they should have pushed for KO, MO, and GO for Kilo-octet, Mega-octet, and Giga-octet for the power of 10 units and leave the existing terminology intact.

Of course the French screwed that up too, because their precious ministry of language wouldn't allow French people to use the word byte and have to use octet anyways.

  2. I've run into a few apps that ask "Do you like this app?" and if you answer yes, it would ask you to rate the app. If you said no, it wouldn't prompt you to rate the app. This is probably one of the other reasons that Apple is making their API mandatory.

  3. That sounds like sending a fax to me.

Somewhere around the intertoobz, there was recently a story regarding a garage that had a tire balancing computer. It was a Commodore 64. I read another story yesterday about a Amiga 1200 running a modern RF communication system.

I think the upgrade/update virus has infected most of us. Me too at times.

And what happens when that C64 or Amiga dies? Right now, you could probably buy another one off of eBay, but do you think that one will last another 35 years?

I have a client who had been running a DOS app from 1981 that managed some industrial hardware. The computer was ancient, and finally gave up the ghost. Found out that while the software would run just fine in DOSbox on a modern pc, it wouldn't interact properly with the hardware it was supposed to be controlling. (something about weird signaling over the serial or parallel port). Found a replacement computer on eBay similar to the original to get them by, but then made it a high priority to get them the needed functionality from modern hardware and a modern OS.

No matter how much you think that you don't need to upgrade at some point, there's always something eventually that bites you in the ass if you don't.

  7. Why? For the same reason Microsoft is putting it on this laptop. When it's brand new, it looks and feels great. A year or two later, not so much; but by then they have your money.

  8. And one of the biggest complaints that luxury car buyers have is the Alcantara steering wheel coverings that get stained from skin oil and can't be cleaned. I would suspect that most people rest their palms on their laptops for a significantly longer period of time than they spend behind the wheel.

I'm not trying to start a flame war, but Windows phones occupy less than 0.1% of the smartphone market. And where they have the lion's share of the market, they don't integrate. Apple has integrated iMessage into all desktops, laptops, iPods, iPhones, and Apple Watches so that it's seamless, and it's tied to your identity, not your phone number. It even plays nice with SMS. You don't realize how convenient it is until you use it, but getting an SMS notification on your computer screen, and being able to click and reply without even switching applications, then continue the same thread later on your phone is absolutely brilliant in scope and execution. (And I hate to admit it, but those damn for-pay sticker packs are making iMessage a lot more popular for end users of a certain age, and developers.)

That about sums up the information that I've gathered as well, but it doesn't make sense. Apple counsel was very clear that Spotify was breaking Apple's developer guidelines with their latest app. None of the actions you listed are breaking the guidelines. So, one of two things must be occurring:

    1) Apple's lawyer is lying about the app breaking the rules.

    2) There's something else in the app that hasn't been made public that is violating the rules.

I don't know about you, but I just can't fathom Apple's lawyers flat out lying about the app. Apple relies too much on developer goodwill to completely screw over a big developer so capriciously. I think there's more to this story than either side is willing to discuss, and it's my opinion that Spotify put one toe over the line in the sand that Apple has drawn, and Apple is threatening to cut it off.
