It happens all the time; often times charges are pressed against just the boy by the girl's spiteful parents. The boy's parents had no recourse because counter-charges were invalid. At some point when I when in high school, Ohio changed the law so that it was impossible to press charges against just one or another. Both kids would be prosecuted for "raping" each other if they were younger than 16. At first I thought the move was absolutely insane, until I realized that it was the only fix for the problem that a politician in Ohio could get away with; it would take a very special kind of jackass to send his own daughter to jail because he didn't like her boyfriend. Fortunately, there's also an exception for age difference, so a 18 year old fucking his 17 year old girlfriend can't get ambushed. It's a more rational setup than I gave it credit for when it affected me.

I suppose it's too late to not reveal myself as a complete dork, already being on Slashdot, so here goes: Granted the last hundred episodes of Naruto have been total crap, but the story is still continuing. Essentially, the manga started first and has been divided into two sections, one ending when Sasuke leaves, and a second that takes place a few years later dealing mainly with Akatsuki. There was also a short bit about how Kakashi got his sharingan as a kid. Each anime episode covers more than one chapter of the manga, so it caught up quickly. The crap filler episodes are meant to let the manga get ahead, so presumably they can finish the second story arc around the same time. Unfortunately, there may not be much of a fanbase by the time that happens. I've given up watching the anime, and just read the manga now. It's much more worth it.

  11. Re:Well the one I asked on Iraq Study Group Reaches Concensus · · Score: 2, Insightful

The casualty number is high and fatality number is low for two reasons:

    1. Because we are essentially entrenched at critical, known locations, our units are easy to locate and sabotage. Also, because they are largely in cities full of civilians, it's often impossible to identify an enemy until they've already struck. That means that just about every attack is a surprise attack, with minimal chance for winning any particular conflict. This is going to result in high casualties, fatal and non-fatal.

    2. Because of improvements in medical technology, and quick access to medical services due to the locations they're fighting in, many of the casualties turn out to be non-fatal, even if they otherwise cripple or maim the soldiers in question. This keeps the fatality number low compared to the overall casualty count.

#2 is the reason that they pick the fatality number over casualties, the smaller number looks better. Combine that with the fact that most people don't understand the difference between fatality and casualty, and you've got good spin with no effort.

Well, let's say you're a baker, and you make a profit sell white and wheat bread.

If you start producing pumpernickel, are you competing against yourself, or are you just expanding the products you offer?
Some people will buy less white or wheat bread and to buy pumpernickel, and some people will buy pumpernickel in addition to the breads they bought already. Also, you might attract customers who never would have bought white or wheat, but want pumpernickel.

In the first case, you're competing against yourself, but you're still making money. You've just transferred your profits from your original products to your new product. In the second case, you're getting more profit from already existing customers, and in the third case, you're getting profit from new customers.

Although you're competing against yourself, you're making higher profits. If you refused to make pumpernickel at all, and the baker across the street did, you would be losing profits from cases one and three. So, this isn't really damaging to their company at all.
