I've been hitting reload hoping that somebody will post some links to the real-time one-way translators which were mentioned in the post... anybody have some information on said devices?
Why have them enter their passwords into the computer? Why not just ask them their logins are, make a list, and then run the crack on what is already there, right in front of them on a projected screen, showing their passwords, or something similar, perhaps not showing an acutal password, but have john_doe pop up when his password cracked, then if the people dont believe it, they can ask you personaly.
I'm only a year older than "Chicks_Hate_Me", my problem was that I wasn't really ready for college, I was lucky enough to get a job at a really awesome company, getting a job first really helped me to decide what exact area in the computer field I want to persue. I really want to go to college now, because I have a reason. The other benifit is I'll have quite a bit saved up for when I start college.
Summary: College for sure, but working first will help give you a reason for college and some money.
Ok, I've read the comments in the thread over, and I've read the article twice... what am I missing? how will they decide who gets the money? What did I miss?
I can't see any use for these except perhaps a wacom tablet emulator... even then, you can get a wacom 12"x12" on ebay for $40, older palms sell for less than $40...
I really hope that this means they will be coming out with a holographic drive soon, I went to a science fair back in '99 (if memory serves) at the IBM Almaden Research Center. They demonstrated a table sized holographic drive to us - they played a IBM commercial off of it... I've been waiting ever since.

This has got to be the best book review I have read in at least a year... Even my short attention span could not distract me from it. He hit the nail on the head when he talked about the "fear-mongering" that goes on.
The closest I have seen to what they are talking about is changing the colour of the scroll bar, they claim it will work without downloading anything does anybody here have an idea?
One has to wonder also, how will this fast food, if this is a way to lower prices another cent, i'm sure a few places will try this out at one time or another... ewww
The first thing I did when I got my ID was to take a hard drive magnet to the strip, it is the best way to ensure that I have more control over who gets to see my personal information. It would be crazy for somebody to declare my ID to be invalid because the mag strip is "bad". It has the holograms, and the mini picture, which are pretty hard to forge...
I for one have not used Altavista since google came out. I do lots of research, on many differen't topics (I used to do debate). And I have never had any reason to go back to Altavista, Indeed this article has encouraged me to try out Altavista again, but I would have liked the author to show exactly in what respects Altavista is better than Google.
I might have read the article wrong, but this looks like all it does is use the iPods built-in menu system and just makes a bunch of mp3's based on what you input into your "PIM", kind of like "$ touch meeting-at-12:00-mc_donalds.mp3"...
Amen to that, Because of this train wreck companies are able to make money out of "application servers". Which take care of all the protocol hacking that has to go on to make a "web application"... HTTP really sucks for doing dynamic content.
Yes, this is true now, but before 1998 Fraunhofer didn't bother enforcing their patents. Because of that that climate, people assumed that it was "free" you didn't have to pay for the encoder, didn't have to pay for the decoder. Not very many people knew about the patents, and very few people cared.
This is the article to which I am refering: http://www.mp3.com/news/095.html
Today, regardless of the patent situation, mp3 is all over the place, handheld players, dvd players, mp3/cd players. Granted some of these support wma as well. But mp3 is the de-facto standard.
This has set the bar higher for anybody looking to displace mp3.
I would revise my statment to include price as an issue "among other things" (i.e. quality, ease of ues)
Hey thanks, it would be nice if you would tell me in what way I'm ill-informed. Your posting in itself is just an opinion, unless you show why. If you want to make an assertion like that, then you should show why you are right and I am wrong.
This apears to be a pretty targeted solution "suitable for wireless real-time communication in software" so comparing it to wma/mp3/ogg doesn't really apply. As far as if its better or not, it doens't really matter, mp3 is still the de-facto standard for end-user music encoding, simply because everybody uses it. And a licenced codec will never take over the "market"

I've seen one of these before, they are huge.

A few searches on google came up with nothing beyond the scrollbar thing, do you have any links?

Rumor has it that they'll be replacing the Orcs with Goat-like creatures called "Goatse".

Bumper stickers would be awesome, I'm intrested!
Well... hack as in "poor, yet, functional solution"

That would rock

Constructive criticism would make better
