Having just gotten home from the bar, i was browsing/. and got a little fired up imagining you to be a SUV driving maniac pissing on the bike crowd, my bad for the knee-jerk reaction. Thanks for the cool-headed reply and the show of class in the face of my initial response.
Granted, you do have to make your own fun sometimes, and I've been around lots of other cities and know what the parent was saying. Just got back from SF/LA/NY, etc. in fact and yes, the potential fun factor is higher in a lot of places.
I'm just saying it's not that rough to meet people here and have a good time. I didn't mean to put the parent down and wasn't talking about LAN parties by the geeky thing. I just meant there's lots of fun people around of all types - you just have to be open to people in general and stay the hell away from the Lotus whatever you do;).

This is an absolutely acceptable solution in my opinion: Proxy the trojaned machines to only the page with the solution to their problem, or to a page stating that they have this problem and provide links to remedy the situation. I feel that that might just take care of this sort of thing.
Cutting them off has a much higher pain-in-the-ass factor, however, which might lead to a more long term solution of user education. If the users actually have to jump through hoops to get back online, they might take greater steps to keep their machines patched and protected.
Aesthetically I favor the latter situation as it really drives the point home. I'm not sure if the market would bare this out though. If a user can just jump ship to another ISP that doesn't cut them off they will probably do so in most cases.
I think all ISP's should cut off trojaned users. Trojaned windows machines have really made the net hell for all of us. I'm certain everyone's spam count would drop considerably if those machines were just plain knocked off the net until patched.
Anyway, long story short:
I think the tactic the article is covering is great, however your suggestion, while not totally ideal in my little world, provides a happy pseudo medium ground that would also remedy a lot of my concerns. Cheers and pardon my drunken ramblings;)

Hmm, that would seem to depend upon the state of the economy. If those 400,000 are only able find other work at walmart or mcdonald's, I don't really see how this is a net gain. The same amount of wealth may be circulating in the economy, but the overall standard of living has been reduced.
If they are able to retrain and find work in a skilled field that pays as well as their prior position did then, yes, there is a gain.

Something along the lines of a death sentence for or mandatory castration of the offender might go a long way to curb the problem. Not sure that I'd completely advocate either but since you were soliciting suggestions, there you go.

Heh, my business partner and I were adding a tape library to our server rack yesterday. It was scraping against the sides of the tray and didn't quite want to go in, so we lubed up the sides of the tray with vaseline. Worked like a charm, but it looked a bit disturbing after we got the library in place and before we wiped off the excess. This was my first experience with lubed computer equipment. It still makes me feel kinda creepy...
