You have somewhat of a point there. However, speaking as one of those that gave up on windows around w2k but has had to keep abreast of current versions to make the occasional $, I am amazed at the amount of time I've spent and money I've earned cleaning malware/viruses/exploits/etc. off of modern windows machines. I mean, it's just ridiculous.
It seems to be a much more stable OS these days if properly admined and Kudos to Redmond for making improvements. Really, I think improvements in any OS benefit the computing world especially in an OS family that is so ubiquitous. It's still got a hell of a long way to go before it could lure me back though and I doubt that it ever could. All of my computing needs are taken care of with Linux on the desktop and server, FreeBSD on the server side, and my roomate's Mac for the occasional fancy thingy I can't do as easily with Linux.
Were I to dump a bunch of cash on an OS/computer a Mac would be the thing I'd go for. Those things are phenomenal these days. UNIX with a fantastic GUI and great commercial multimedia offerings. Until I get some cash though, I won't even bother to pirate some so so widows version. I can't really understand what you'd want windows for other than games and then why not just get an xbox or ps2 or something. *nix is doing fine by me, thanks.
Not to dispute the main argument of your post, but just FYI, my g/f is a felon and is allowed to vote. She recieved a pamphlet from the state informing her of her right to vote after finishing her time. This is in Oregon, the laws of other states may vary.
while you make some valid points, there are a couple I have to address...
1) How easy is it to manage this distro in my enviroment. Running "apt-get upgrade" on 500 servers is not do-able.
Ok, how many people are actually running 500 servers? Even if they are, see 2)
2) Can I keep my system software in sync across all servers?
There are several trivial ways to address this. Among them:
Scripted upgrade commands that hit all of these servers (of course after testing the upgrades on development servers)... or
Having them all update from an in-house repository that pulls the current releases or even your own custom packages either via a cron job or a script that tells the servers to ugrade (again after testing on development servers) thus saving an assload of bandwidth.
Really, this is trivial and if you can't manage this, you don't deserve to be admining these systems.
No kidding, my SO thinks I'm a hero for getting her free broadband by putting a wifi card in her desktop. Thankfully she's got 4 neighbors within range so if any one of them in particular figures it out, she'll still have access for a while. Maybe it's not technically ok, but all she does is surf and check email about twice a week so I doubt they'll miss the bandwidth. Yay neighbors!
The problem I see with OS fingerprinting is the assumption that certains OSes are running certain (vulnerable/potentionally trojaned) applications. I don't think you can safely make those assumptions.
While the method you mention is one way of fingerprinting, most modern tools use a more sophisticated approach. Here is a fairly simple explanation of some of those methods if you're interested.
As others have mentioned before, putting the flags last is really a good habit to get into when doing an rm. This is assuming of course that your OS's version of rm allows this (most do as far as I know).
`rm/bleh -rf` will help you catch those typos without destroying everything.
I wonder if it's something as simple as unencrypted passwords going a wireless network or some nonsense like that.
Dsniff and arpspoof will get you all the cleartext passwords you want even on a switched network (albeit only on the same subnet). Cleartext auth is just plain bad, but unfortunately almost everyone's pop account uses unencrypted authentication. This is easy.
Hmm, well i work under the table and pay for everything in cash. I'm surfing the net from a loaned laptop via my gf's unsuspecting neighbor's open wireless AP. I think I'm fine. Ahh, the joys of being a bum ^H^H^Hconsultant. I do sometimes miss having a real job though... Dammit, they'll be coming after me with an RFID tag any day now:P
Hmm, normally I'd agree with you. However, after the week i've had I was about ready to give up on the whole relationship with another person thing and renew my former sordid affair with my right hand. Now I'm thinking voles may offer a distraction I hadn't previously considered;)
Yeah, I know that it's good practice to keep the plug in while holding the computer case for installing components so you stay grounded,
Actually, this is good practice for AT power supplies, but most ATX power supplies are still running a small amount of current even with the power off making this another excellent way to ruin components. Just an fyi...
too bad they didn't go as far as to register legoatse.cx - it's available;) . although, funny as this site is, perhaps it doesn't warrent shelling out $8.75 a year. I'd cough it up were i not so fitfully employed at the moment. good stuff...

By the way, this applies to any distro, not just Debian, although it is my fave.

Sure, as long as the neighbors continue to set up their new gear with the default (unencrypted) settings then it's great!

Anyone know of a tool similar to AirPwn that doesn't require two cards? Just curious, or can you use a standard packet forger for a similar effect?
Ettercap should do the trick.
Wow, it is indeed real. there's even a torrent available for those interested. Um .. wow

How in the heck is his page standing up to a /.ing so well?!?

that's how.
um, and it's Sal Wise.
Not that he's not a dick and it's not a pseudonym or anything, but for fscksake think about your questions before you ask them.
yeah yeah, flamebait, whatever...get a life mods

You win :) thanks for the laugh. Seriously though, I think that would make laser tag vastly more fun.
Well, it's at $201.01, but nobody has actually bid on it as of this posting. Sooo, I don't think that really counts for much.

Sheesh, I stand corrected. $160 for 2 years. ouch!
I think everyone might be flattering themselves a bit to think that there is a public perception of slashdotters :) .

It's just you. The planet didn't exist before the universe, hence it is younger.
Thanks for checking it out :)
