You talk about contractual obligation and yet ignore the contractual obligation that Microsoft make to the user. They provide software for a given use and more and more we see how unfit for that use it is. This is another example. Just like with Sony, this tool can and will be used by those unfriendly people to do harm. It does often do harm to the legitimate user who because their user registration has been used by some internet cafe in Asia find they cannot use their PC, and as soon as a tool is released to access the functions with bad intent (not difficult so soon) your PC will be at more risk and why? Because rather than honour their contractual obligation to provide a secure and reliable OS as they say in their press releases they would rather provide an insecure OS that they can use to do harm to others because they are more paranoid than proffessional.

I own 10 legitimate copies of Windows but I used a warez copy to install because I cannot be bothered with all the hassles that Microsoft make their customers suffer. For my own use I use SuSE but my customers do not like Linux so I have to have Windows. I do not think that Windows should ever be allowed near the internet so WGA is a mote point to me but for others the problems will be real.

No, they set themselves up for a war with Germany because Germany challenged their failing hegemony.

Germany offered no challenge to Britain and even made it clear that they wanted Britain as an ally.

The Brits were practically inconsequential by the time we invaded France.

I do not know where you get your history from but it is not from reality. The British put more soliers into France, and Italy than anyone else. They also had more soldiers already in mainland Europe than anyone else. It is only in the films that it is mainly US soldiers because there were many other countries as well that Hollywood forgets. It is an extreme dishonour to their effort when people like you denigrate the effort they made and try to take credit for the blood of others. Britain had no reason to surrender and would not have. The main difference that the US made was where the line between east and west was drawn. This was something that was already predicticted and being planed for. Even if the US had not helped and the British, French, Polish, Canadian, Australian, Kiwis etc, had all stayed at home, Hitler would have still lost to the Russians but the whole of Europe would have disapeared into Russia and no one wanted that except Stalin.

It is also true that the British soldiers were battle hardened veterans (as were the Germans) and newly arrived GIs were green and quickly became famous for running away when they got shot at. The Dakotas (US pilots) that were towing gliders full of paratroopers kept dumping the gliders as soon as they saw a German fighter. It was not as if the extra speed even helped them given the speed of a German fighter compared to a Dakota. It was because of this lack of experience that the US troops got slaughtered on their beaches when the other teams went for it and lost fewer soldiers overall on the beach assaults.

That was the intended goal when Roosevelt decided to supply them 'under the table'

Nothing was under the table. The US supplied both sides and did it for profit. GWs family made a fortune supplying Hitler. It was not part of a war plan, it was a business plan. The Germans messed it up by attacking the US. The US got rich out of the war and was happy to do so.

Putting those oil reserves in the hands of constitutional democracies is certainly acting "for the oil,"

This may be a tricky one for you but question number one - What political system was in place in Iraq in 1990? I'll give you a clue. they had just had an election. Yeah, they could only choose people that Saddam said were good enough but now they can only choose people that GW says are good enough, do you really think that the Iraqi people see that as different?

That's like saying that when the US marched into Germany and liberated the concentration camps, that it was for the German beer.

Your absurd rant went right off course at the end :D After Hitler declared war on the US it is understandable that the US defended itself by joining the allies when they invaded Germany. It is true that the US was the third largest force and therefore a main part in the invasion of Germany. That is a little different from attacking one of your main allies. We all knew that Saddam no longer had WMD and the intelligence forces made that fact clear.

The US did turn up late in WWII with the beer and pizza but no one holds it against them because they were welcome along, but keep it in context. The only one there that was ultruistic was Britain as they declared war on Germany because what Germany was doing was wrong. Russia was the main force (they had also been attacked by Germany like the US) that went, Britain was the second force and yes the US did turn up for the party. Read the facts and don't learn history from Hollywood. Russia was the only one that did not avoid the concentration camps as we all knew the logistical problems that would be caused when we arrived at the gates. That is why the German officers had all left without being captured as it was days before we went back to the camps.

or rather, in this case, why not just post them a degree as if they are cheating it is not the lack of universities that is the problem but their inability to perform at the required level to get in. More universities or more money will not make them better unless of course maybe the money could be spent on better high school education. I work in high school ATM and most students do not do well because they cannot be bothered to do the work so no matter how much is spent they will not perform any better. I personally think that we should fail more at high school while they are young enough to learn from that. Because, currently, they know that the teachers will carry them through they get progressively more lazy and then the shock of university where no one carries them is too much for them. Universities are already being dumbed down, even in China, to get more degrees out the door. I think that this just makes the future look less bright.

Maybe in a few years when the rest of you are discussing the next generation I will get round to buying one if they have won the format war. but if you write down all the "tier 1" universities in a particular discipline, more than half of them will be in America.

And that is because only an American would know what a "tier 1" university is. This is another case of people reading too much of their own propaganda. There are many very good universities in the US and there are a vast majority of rubbish. Pretty much like the way Europe is becoming. If you want a majority of high standard you need to visit Russia where standards are still more important than income.

Europe has started following the American lead of modularisation at university which means that students can actually leave university with a good degree even though they have not learnt anything. They do a module and while it is all fresh in their heads they do the test and get a good GPA even though at the end of the 4 years they have forgotten what subjects they did. Even though Britain has not taken up the GPA idea it has modularised its courses which means that the result is the same even though the student has a 2:1 instead of a 3.8. It has to do with surface learning as opposed to deep learning (if you ubderstand knowledge systemes it is like data and knowledge), everything is skimmed with facts and figures and nothing is really worked on to a depth that generates a real understanding of how it really works. Some universities do still bother to teach their students real understanding (i.e. most of the Oxford colleges with Brookes being an exception, most of Cambridge etc.) but the vast majority are more interested in making the university look good by passing lots of young people without really considering an education to be important. They are now businesses that sell degrees rather than places of education.

I was recently listening to a group of students in Kazakhstan who had spent a year studying in the US and they were all amazed at how poor American education is compared to what they are led to beleive in the media. That is what it comes down to though, most people do not find out for their selves, they just believe the media. Most students do not go to university to learn, they go there to get a degree. They do not complain if they do not learn as long as they get a degree. They are not going to say "hey, that was crap" because they do not want to say that the piece of paper they have is crap.

In China I found the standard to be very high but what do I read in the media? Now I teach in Thailand though and the standard here is so very bad I cannot go into it. It is simply wrong to criticise a student here no matter how bad they behave or how little effort they put in. Next I will teaching in the middle east, I wonder what I will think of that.

I would not go back to teaching in the west but that is not to say that things are better here, just different.
