Meh, my Canon i560 in draft mode costs almost nothing per page. And Black refills are $11 and last forever. It costs me no where near $70 per 500. Plus I can print the odd photo or two. Oh and its small an doesn't take up much power.
I'll be honest when a customer tells me they don't every need color and/or print a lot of pages I always suggest a laser. But inkjets specifically Canon's have improved where you don't get raped for using them if you choose the right one. The problem is people still buy HP inkjets for some reason that literally ass fuck the hell out of you on every cartridge you buy.
Buy a $100 Canon inkjet, run draft mode, be happy. Even in regular mode its a good deal for home users.
What a strange thing to say. If this was 1999 I could see your point, but give me a break. Red Hat, Novell, and IBM are all well known names by now. Sheesh.
I don't doubt you tried Fedora but did you even do any searchs on google regarding this? At all?
All of that and more is explained at several easily findable and popular FAQ and howto sites specific to Fedora and this issue. I'm not even going to list them but just typing Fedora and mp3 or DVD in google is enough to answer all of your questions.
This isn't a case of me being "shut the f*** up noob! Read the man!" either. Fedora's multimedia policy is easily found and fixed with the most basic of efforts. The fact that you knew about the patent problems and why certain codecs aren't included with Fedora shows your clearly smart enough to figure out the first thing you should have done when you had a question.
"I think that been able to play most widespread audio and video formats (with Xine or Mplayer) should be a key point for a modern linux distro."
Right and Fedora and every other distro out there can do that. You already know why that can't be done with a truly OSS distro so why the fuss? Can XP rip to mp3 and play DVD's right out of the box?
"Because a lot of us don't have infinite amounts of time"
That implies that to use Linux its going to take vasts amounts of tweaking to make it useable. That of course is a bald faced lie of the highest order.
Buy a prebuilt linux box and be done with it. Your video, sound, keyboard, mouse, office suite, email, picture manager, web browser etc would all work perfectly out of the box. And then there would be none of this Linux is hard to configure bullshit. My mouse doesn't scroll...waaahhh.
I wish people who used Macs had to first figure out how to do it and get all of their hardware supportd via PearcPC. Then they would see how fucking stupid it is to complain that something you download mostly for Free and install yourself is hard to do versus just buying it preloaded like you do with a Mac or Dell.
Oh but no, you'll just download Slackware and try to install on your mismatched hardware that was built for XP or built for some other OS and then wonder why its hard to get working and why it "wastes time".
Oh and finally who the Fuck cares what jz thinks. I haven't pooped in two days, film at 11.

Yea that's what Sony wants. Everyone to play "illegal" downloaded roms on their PSP instead of buying licensed games and media which profit Sony.
I also don't think the DS and the PSP are in the same league long term. The DS just doesn't have the horsepower. If it were not for its wireless feature it would be IMHO a washout.
Don't be silly, this isn't an issue. Firstly If anyone sends you this file now you tell them you only accept files in XXX format. Every printer I've ever dealt with has had no problem telling me which format the file needs to be in. Secondly, the graphics industry is not going to go full tilt supporting a file that doesn't work for their needs.
Remember, MS doesn't get everything it wants. TV top boxes and phones are two examples where MS didn't get what it wanted because the industry didn't want what they were pushing. If this file format and product turns out to be unacceptable for real printing needs then it simply won't be used.
I guess if your a vocal Debian user you have to expect this though don't you? Debian users claim seemless upgrading is a tenant of their distro. Along with stability, being able to upgrade the same distro year after year is one of the two major features of Debian. So when you lose that, it is a big deal. Also severe breakage means different things to different people. When a distro you expect to work perfectly and be worry free suddenly doesn't do what its supposed to I can see why this is a big deal.
"This is not a new problem " Then why isn't that brought up by Debian users constantly when seemless upgrading is brought up? I don't think your call of FUD is entirely justified.
" this is seen clearly by those on the political left and also by "traditional" conservatives"
So in other words 5% of our Congress? Because these days the castrated Democratic majority is too busy trying to copy what Republicans did to gain power, and the Republican majority is too busy implementing their un-American and hurtful NeoCon agenda. So that leaves like 5% of Congress to realize that the other 95% is totatlly fucking up our future? Great.
That's just fantastic. If it was indeed the fault of one company what right do they have to all of his code and domain? I mean WTF? Since when is scumbag company X able to demand property from people without a judgement from a judge?
Welcome to the new world of IP, no need for trial, hand over everything you own and pay your fine or we'll ground you into dust with our crooked lawyers and politicians.
10 years from now we will be looking back at the 90's to 00's as the "Glory Days" when you could actually backup and control your software and hardware.
I know its sounds totally cliche but when you find out whoever did this make sure and A) let them know you won't be buying from them again and way and also B) make purchases and them email them explaining exactly what you bought and how much they should have made from you.
That quietness you hear in the sky is due to millions of Mac users who are currently busy eating crow. What will PPC zealots do now? How will Apple users cope with moving to what they have claimed is an inferior platform all of these years? What will cpu fanboys argue about?
Personally I also thought this wouldn't happen. I have to question though if this mean custom x86 bios, hardware, etc. Or are they planning on letting you install this on a small subset of Intel hardware? You know kinda like how Beos had no wide ranging hardware support but IF you bought the right chipset, gpu, etc you could run it.
All very interesting. I guess this means PearPC will see one hell of a speedup.
" Contrary to popular belief, most people do not use Gentoo for optimization or learning"
Then why does every Gentoo user I've ever seen say exactly that? I think your way off. Gentoo users do mention how they like the Gentoo manages itself and how they are "in control", but 90% of the time I hear about how their OS is "optimized" unlike Red Hat etc and how they are learning what's going on "under the hood".
2% is about right. 16% would IMHO be good for competition but that's a pipe dream for Apple. The idea that is 16% is laugable. If that's true then Linux desktop use is at 13%.
"Now, with Internet, they just automatically join the DDoS against TL time servers once a week."
Oh but the burning question. time.windows.com or time.nist.com?? One for accuracy and one for spite in an attempt to rob MS of bandwidth. Choose wisely.
Oh like say actually accessing your real desktop and not a completely seperate terminal server profile. For remote access I'd rather access my real desktop thanks.
And ever tried UltraVNC with the Mirror Video Driver? Its just as responsive as RDP.
RDP has advantages over VNC but VNC has come a long way and has nice features like File Transfer, Chat, decent speed, a bunch of different viewer, multiplatform support, and also an encryption plugin. So point out what VNC is missing and I'll do the same for RDP. I don't even use RDP anymore and VNC IS a drop in replacement for it that works very well.
"and the eaiest way I've found to avoid getting "crap" is to not run as administrator. *poof*, no more problems. I'm surprised more people haven't figured that out yet."
You mean regular home user are supposed to be able to figure out that they should reconfig their account to normal user? And when nothing works anymore and they can't add or remove hardware or install any software then what? Face it, until there are a lot of changes made by vendors and MS running as anything other than admin makes life difficult for regular consumers.
If and this is a big IF this happens it will be all custom. Apple is not about to give up its hardware lockin ways. Remember they are a hardware company that just happens to sell software people like. Not the other way around. IMHO with x87 they can continue overcharging customers but make even better profit margins.
Anyway I'll believe it when I see it. And somehow I don't think I'll be seeing it anytime soon.
"Novell, conversely, has a long history of providing excellent support"
Novell has a long history of running products into the ground and mismanaging itself.
They were late to offer and advertise a Fully "TCPIP" OS from the ground up. IPX was always what they pushed, TCPIP was an addon and afterthought. They forced developers to write NLMs when the world went App server crazy and MS beat the shit out of them for it by offering better developer support. They forced admins to use a shitty not quite unix, not quite DOS shell they blew chucks for too long. And they completely botched their webserver product from a customer standpoint. Yea you remember that whole Internet Boom right? Ever wonder why Novell sat that one out? Finally they were at a standstill from Netware 4.x to 5.x while the rest of the world went to NT and Microsoft.
So while its fun to Troll Red Hat(nice work btw) realize that those of us that have been around the block a few times don't have the blind faith that you do that Novell will do well OSS offerings.
They do have a good sales channel and there are still some big companies that will only run Netware. But don't think that guarantee's them success just because they've been around and have good contacts. Before they went OSS they were not even making tech headlines anymore.
And btw you obivous hoping that Red Hat fails is a pretty shitty attitude to have against a company that has done so much for the GPL and OSS. You should be hoping that both Novell and Red Hat do well and kick Microsoft's ass. If Red Hat goes down it would NOT be a good thing for OSS in general.
Yep you read that right. And there are a ton of people that have reported the same exact problem. Crappy battery life. If I didn't get it as a cheap upgrade(I did Freeip*ds.com) I would have returned it. Even worse are the Apple zealots who attack you because their Ipod works OK so of course it must be your fault that your Ipod lasts for 1/3 the time it supposed to. Oh and right out of the box I had to do a Restore because the Photo slide show didn't work right.
I know plently of people are happy with their Photo Ipods, but IMHO and the opinion of many others its a half-baked, buggy product. Battery life problems, Distortion issues, and problems right out of the box are things I see contasted reported about the Photo model.

Watch the video on the Whoppix site, 0 to cracking WEP in 10 minutes. Way cool video to watch.

What advantages does it have over distro X? Different strokes for different folks my friend. Why ask why and invite the flames?
btw what's with all the Ubuntu posts claiming that it somehow has something to do with this decision. How arrogant can you get?
