Of course for several disks or Raid 5 your better with off with hardware. But for Raid 1 aka mirroring there is nothing wrong with software and I've been using it for many years at home and at small clients with no problems to speak of.
"It's a poor solution for raid, since if the OS goes, there goes your raid"
That's only a problem if you don't back up your data though. I agree use hardware whenever its possible but in a pinch software works great.
What good is all the development money in the world if nobody ever hears about your product? Or to put it another way, ask Microsoft which is more important. Designing a good product or marketing?
Oh you mean like the "vandalism" that occured when Bush moved into the Whitehouse? You know when Dems caused damage and ripped phones out of walls to spite Bush?
Oh wait, there was NO vandalism and the Republicans made it all up and spread the lies to Fox news. The lie which people still report to this day. Of course don't take my word for it, read the GAO report which states that there was NO damage and it was a madeup story.

"Not having the web site available for the next few days could be devastating."
Yes because we all know that most voters wait till the last minute to decide who to vote for and go soley on the basis of who has the best web site a couple of days before the election. Gimme a break.
Welcome to the wonderful world of DRM. I don't mean to kick you in the nuts while your down but this just shows how dangerous it is when your not in control of things you buy. I HIGHLY suggest you use fairplay or the software from the hymn project (or whatever its called now) and convert your music to MP3 so you don't have to go through this crap in the future. If you ever move away from Apple you'll have to do this anyway so you might as well start now. Sorry your beig treated like a criminal and are not able to access your music the way you want to right now. Of course now expect 50 posts from Ipod fanboy's telling you its your own dam fault. Hopefully you'll be able to resolve this soon.
Don't you mean learn from the past? The worst thing we could do is forget the past. These days unfortunately way too many people are all too happy to forget the lessons of the past.
Not to defend Xandros but what the heck is wrong with a smaller focused beta? Perhaps they find that to be more productive than just throwing a beta out into the wild hoping that people actually test it out and report bugs. I see nothing wrong with this on the surface and its a Very common practice. Quit your bitching already.
which I find to be very useful. Do other vnc clients even offer an encyption plugin? I'm sure others may have caught up by now but IMHO ultravnc take the cake feature wise and works perfectly for me. Really after using it I don't know how people get by using some of the more basic versions of vnc out there. I guess you use what you know.
How many people in the target audience actually care about versions numbers? Let's be realistic here its probably between 0 and 0. People who have not heard about Firefox already (ie the target audience) are not going to say "oh its ONLY 1.0, I'll wait for 2.0". Version numbers only matter to geeks not normal users. My wife, my father, my brother, and my mother all would NOT be able to answer the question "What versions of IE and Windows Media Player do you use?". And these are people who surf the web, do spreadsheets etc on a daily basis. Icon placement and name are what matters. Version number does not. Trust me that's the last thing people are going to think about when they see this ad.
"we may consider adding increased Firefox support in a future version of Desktop Search."
Lame. That's not reassuring at all. I would be a lot happier if they said we WILL be adding increased Firefox support in the future. Yes I understand the econmics of it and that marketshare had a lot to do with it. But considering that its the advanced users who pimped Google and helped really spread the word about it they could have thrown us a bone.

Wow one bug...which wasn't even widely exploited. Compare that to the Millions of Windows machines completely infected with spyware right now because Microsoft has no clue how to secure a web browser.
I've said a billions times that being closed or open source doesn't guarantee anything, security or quality-wise. But combine users running by default as Admin and the pathetic security of IE and you hava a receipe for diaster. Comparisons to Firefox just make your argument look more than a little lame.
Are you watching silent movies or something? I use Seagates and when watching tv at even a low volume I can't hear my PC at all. For movies, ie why you want a HTPC in the first place I can't hear anything but my 5.1 system.
When your a Right Winger everything that's not pointed Right seems Liberal. That's your problem, not the BBC's. BBC news puts US news agencies to shame especially the "Unfair and Unbalanced" Fox News agency.
"Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."
Funny, that's the same reason I occasionally watch Fox news. How can you possibly listen to so many lies per minute and not get sick to your stomach?
Cute. Is that an actual realtime demo running on a DS? That sim alone would sell millions. Hell, imagine grooming your own dog and then playing with another DS user and seeing the two dogs jump from screen to screen?
" which would actually probably be more to the liking of the average PC user - who just checks their email and surfs the web."
Not to start a flame war but that sounds like a waste of money to me. If you just need to surf the web, do email, and light word processing your better off just buying one of those $199 Linux boxes from walmart. Linux isn't for everyone but if you buy it preloaded its retardly easy these days. http://images.linspire.com/screenshots/ss_coho1_bi g.jpg
Personally I think that most users are more advanced then that these days, but for grandma who just wants to surf the web and get pictures of her grandkids via email Linux seems like the better choice at this point. I mean for what your talking about Linux IS useable these days. Granny doesn't need to open up the box and install anything afterall. Even at $399 an XP box would do the job , although compared to Linux and OSX the lack of decent builtin apps hurts.
For what your talking about it just doesn't seem necessary to spend $1000 on an Mac. Anyway now you know how many Linux users feel. They have this decent OS that although it has warts doesn't reach many people would find it useful and effective.
I'm on my 4th one since the rest all slowly stop working working. First you have to "jiggle" the cord, then it only works it if bent a certain way, then it just stops. My latest problem is not the cable, its the 3 power prongs in the actual laptop, something is loose beyond the pin in there and now it constantly switches from AC to battery.
Of course it doesn't help that I have a shitty Inspiron 4000 series. Loose video cable behind the LCD which turns the screen Pink? Check. Mouse that goes crazy for no reason and can't be fixed? Check. Original Actiontec nic/modem which will NOT work at 100MB and is defective from the start? Check. Tech support which always refused to fix anything and just keeps insisting to run "Dell Diaganostics" over and over? Check. I'd sell this on ebay in a second but no way would I want to screw someone else that badly.
I'm sure some people out there love their Inspirons and are on their original power cords, but I'm sure as hell not one of them.
"popularity of mobile phones (cell phones to you Americans)"
Yes we call them that here as well.

Not if they are testing out the service first and why would they focus the service for Europe only?

Fuck em. Half the time I try to ebay and am actually willing to spend cash up front via "buy now" some moron puts up a $1 bid on a 4 day auction just so "buy now" won't work.
btw your theory about a jealous "$2000.00" bidder is pretty unlikely. The price has only gone up $300 since the/. posting and there is no indication that/. has had any effect on the auction.
Do people still come to/. one of the major Linux and OSS hubs on the Internet and expect pro-MS reporting? Can you explain that to me? Do you think Linux users got to Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows expecting pro-Linux reporting? No they don't.
Maybe when we can go a finally go a few months without a horrific finanically devasting virus or security flaw in Windows being reported, then we will give MS a second chance. Until then you'll excuse us if we don't give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt. Especially when you consider their past and current efforts to wipe Linux and OSS from the face of the planet and how they put out major Press Releases where they LIE about Linux on a weekly basis.
See here you are getting pissed off that an anonymous poster used the word "re-write" which btw is techincally correctly. Compare that to the garbage MS puts out constantly about Linux which reaches CEO's, the media, and sites likely to be read by management(as opposed to/.). Now you tell me which is worse and does more damage via FUD?
That's what you missed, listening to anyone with any level of maturity and experience in the OSS community . Red Hat doesn't say that can NEVER happen with OSS. Linus doesn't say its IMPOSSIBLE for OSS software to ever have bugs or security issues that aren't found and fixed. The Debian developers don't claim they have fixed every single potential bug in every single package they put out.
One of the most annoying things users do is pick one single instance and say "HA!!!, this proves OSS is whatever". Newsflash, one OSS project doesn't=every OSS project. There is well written and secured OSS code out there and there is shoddy insecure OSS code out there. Nobody ever claimed that OSS is a panacea for all security issues.

These are mostly searches for cameras so at any point I'll have a dozen 4MP sample pictures open as well. I very much think there is a problem somewhere else with your OS. While I'm still a Canon fan Kodak makes some really decent digicams these days. They have nice screens and their DX series has most of the features their market wants.
