Because people are stupid and don't bother looking into whether what they are saying is true or not?
I guess you and I are the only ones to notice that many modern distros already ship/having been shipping OO.org with "native widgets". http://aoeu.standardout.com/lxer/tom/26 363/sowrite r.jpg
sssshhhh. Don't wake up the mods...They're sleeping...But yes native widgets are KEY. Yep that's what's been holding back Linux from storming the coporate desktop. Widgets. *cough*
Yea because they should go out on their own and develop a completely new never seen before Open Dialog that is completely unlike anything ever seen on either Windows or Mac... That will be a real boon for productivity. Gimme a freaking break. Leave the who invented what and when to the fanboys. If something works use it.
btw if Apple is so innovative how come the only way they could "innovate" a great OS was to copy from BSD?
Unfucking believable. And when they run every other anti-spyware company out of business then what? We are stuck with the same company that makes the flaws and then sells us software to protect us from those flaws. Can you say fucking conflict of interest? Design better software, don't sell me a bandaid I have to pay a subscription for.
Buy a Canon. Yup hate to sound like a mindless fanboy buy that solved all of my problems with regards to home photo printing.
1. It costs about 40% more than the.19 prints I get. Nothing I can do about that but for immedite prints it can't be beat. 2. Why is it possibly a hassle? Buy paper from the company that builds your printer. End of story and end of hassles. 3. Canon's don't constantly clog heads like other brands and have been very reliable in my experience. 4. The Free canon software that you get with your printer allows you to pre-crop and let's you see exactly what your going to get. Otherwise feel free to use the mindnumbingly easy jpegcrops. 5. Less than 1 minute per print.
Home prints are NOT the solution for heavy duty printouts. They are a not as good as the best setup commercial printers. They are almost as good and most people will not notice any difference.
Again I highly suggest you buy a Canon they are cheap to run, produce good results, and most importantly are easy to use.
Slogger is an Extension for Mozilla Firefox web browser. It can:
* create a complete log of your browsing history (thus the name: Slogger "browse logger")
* save a copy of each page you visit to your hard drive and/or to an archive provided by an online service
* create a customizable text file containing a history of pages you've visited
I think there is an extension that actually saves everything you do in Firefox. I can't remember the name but the idea was to never delete your cache and keep it forever. Stop by the mozillazine forums and ask or browser mozdev which is where I *think* I remember seeing it.
As I type this I'm about to finally sit down for a movie after spending hours on yet on spyware/adware infested PC. I'm just tired of it. As much as I hate those scumbags who put out adware etc I have to once again question. What the fuck was Microsoft thinking waiting until summer 2004 to deal with the problem? Oh and the other 50% of Windows users on this planet who are not running XP with SP2? They're just as screwed now as they were before.
Thunderbird is not now nor will it ever be a Full Drop-in replacement for Outlook where Exchange is concerned. Its an Outlook Express replacement which actually IMHO works decently for most home users. Its certainly a LOT safer.
Things like Calendaring, Group scheduling, Tasks, Notes and Full Palm Sync would take a a huge amount of work and simply were never on the rode map. Not only that but most devs and Thunderbird users are flat out against creating and "Outlook Clone". They want basic email features, solid spam filitering and that's it. Of course nobody has a problem with anyone creating some nice extensions which at least get you paritially there.
So while I join you in lamenting the lack of a Free proper drop in Outlook replacement for Exchange environments Thunderbird isn't the answer.
The Chinese government was one of SEVERAL large investors. Not the only investor as the submittor tried to frame it. This search engine isn't some sort of special anti-democracy device whose sole purpose is to oppress the Chinese people. If you think Clinton was anti-democratic then you must be posting from Cananda right now considering the current administrations policies.
If we are going to start bashing everyone who has anything to do with making or receiving money from the Chinese government then there are going to be a hell of a lot of Neocon's on the list as well.
That was my thought as well. Alpha Color management software from 2000 that almost definitely won't easily work with any recent piece of software isn't very helpful. If was easy as 123 to get gimp and full color management working on Linux we would all be doing it right now.
I'm one of those people who gets really pissed off when there is an article on Gimp and millions of Photoshop users come out to bash it. But I'm also not naive and I'd never steer a Pro Photographer towards Linux. Hopefully that will be change over the next few years. Then again I've saying something similar to that regarding the adoption of Dekstop Linux since the 90's...
You know I was going to post something to that effect except for the whole/.ers "don't get it" part. Dejanews's archive has real societal value. I agree that it is wrong to leave it in the hands of one company. What if google decides to pull the plug? There goes a resource that people rely on daily for doing research. There goes an irreplaceable database on any topic you can possibly think of. The data there is invaluable and regardless of what most people would think I would have zero problem with the government taking control of it or forcing Google to allow the Library of Congress to make a complete copy for the public good. Google alone should not have a monopoly on this important data.
Contrary to what many people say its no competition for Outlook. Outlook Express, sure. But its really lacking in features for business and expecially corporate users. No built-in mature calendar, no real full featured palm syncing. How useful is syncing ONLY your address book? I'm not talking about a full blown Exchange client here, but there are certain basics people expect. Unfortunately judging by the response over the last few years those types of features and turning Thunderbird into something that competes with Outlook proper is not something the dev(s) is interested in.
I hope Thunderbird fans don't think I'm just bashing it. I suggest and install Thunderbird for any OE users I encounter. OE is just not safe to use. I'm just kinda let down because its hasn't turned out the way I had envisioned it.
Oh and as the other person pointed out, on Linux Evolution is very nice. Perhaps one day it will be availabe for Windows.
Avast works VERY well and I've installed it on many systems with no problems and very good detection rates. The consumer version of NAV has just become too bloated to deal with anymore. Out of all of the free anti-virus proggies IMHO it works the best and they are very good about keeping it up to date. Just make sure to disable sounds when you install it.:)
Or make that "Privacy is assured" until we feel like leaking the details of your kid as a political weapon. But of course nobody in power would do a dirty thing like that...
Just realize(as I'm sure you do) that OOL will go up. OOL has steadily raised prices over and over the past few years. I used to use OOL but got tired of the increases and switched to Verizon. It's only 1500/384 but for $13 less a month I can live with it.
First off I'm sorry but what the hell does Linux have to do with this? Yea Linux has bugs, so what? Most of the distros out there don't cost $49. Even if they did what does that have to do with the price of tea in China? Linux isn't a game and nobody here said "too bad HL2 isn't as bug free as Linux".
Second and related to my first point this is a major problem that the game obviously should not have shipped with. Accepting your point that all software has bugs that doesn't mean something that was delayed for years and years should be able to ship with such a noticeable flaw. If they had done a public demo this would have been very apparent and could have been fixed. It is completely right to hold Valve's feet to the fire on this. On the topic of whether this is "front page material" I happen to think that it is. Slashdot is news for nerds and most nerds are playing HL2 right now being that its one of the biggest releases of any piece of software this year. I'm sure many of the readers here are glad to hear this info. Yea it could have easily gone in the gaming section but so what? What , you wanted to read yet another article on the Ipod?
As I plan on acquiring HL2 and playing on my Ti4200. It just annoys me to no end that you can buy a really fast cpu, a nice big hard drive, or many other quality computer items for ~100 but when it comes to video cards your always looking at $175-$200 for anything that will last a few years.
Wait...what's this? A sensible post from someone who isn't saying Red Hat is the "Microsoft of Linux" and how they've moved all of their computers to Gentoo because only wankers use Red Hat. Say it isn't so!
Not really. At least if my semi-retard math ability is correct. Say its 50hrs total per bulb and cost $20. A typical movie is 2hrs. That's 25 movies for $20 or $.80 a movie. That's really not much for what you get. Of course I'm looking at this as a use twice a weekend sort of deal, not something you use for watching TV or playing games. The thing is most people can't justify $1200 for a "real" projector. $250 in ghetto parts is affordable and something you can easily save for. I still need more info though before I start hunting for old LCDs.
...by buying other companies. Microsoft talks a lot about "their" innovations yet if you look at who they bought over the last 10 years its obvious that almost everything they put out is someone else's product.
btw before you think I'm just some MS hater I guess I should state I'm not against the practice nor Microsoft's products in general. If the end result is a good product then who cares how it was made. Just wanted to point out that its a bit ironic that people expect brand new innovative products from the ground up from OSS yet don't give a single thought to the fact that almost everything MS puts out wasn't developed in-house at first and they rely almost soley on outsiders for many of their innovations and ideas.
6.1 was a great WP. Post 6.1 they got caught up in trying to compete against MS's Full suite and didn't transition to Win32 ie Win 95 that well. They lost out big time by waiting so long to produce a fully "32 bit" version of their suite while Office 95 was out right away and without piracy guards got installed on every corp PC in the world. Maybe MS withholding technical info factored in here? Assuring that in the new Win32 world Novell would never be able to compete on equal footing with Microsoft? Guess we will find out.
My concern is if Novell pushes MS hard enough, MS will strike back with a huge patent offensive against Novell's Linux business. Of course that might be MS's eventual goal all along so maybe pushing Microsoft to sue before they are ready is part of the game.
"Many Linux users are scandalously ungrateful and have no sense for UNIX tradition and history"
Well you realize why right? I mean its not like Sun didn't earn Linux user's scorn will the BS they've put out about Linux over the years. Should Linux users be grateful? Fine. Should they like Sun after all of the Linux bashing? Why would they? You can't honestly be surprised, although being that it appears your a big Sun fan I guess for some odd reason you are.
They are absolutely first in line when it comes to screaming bloody murder and attacking with lawyers when anyone puts out products that resemble anything they do.
The thing is I agree with you. Pulling up and leaving isn't the right thing to do. I just think its odd that you would defend Apple in that way since they clearly have no tolerance when people put out products similar to theirs. If things were reversed we would have 500 posts from Apple users accusing the Konfab author of stealing Apple's "innovative ideas".
Because people are stupid and don't bother looking into whether what they are saying is true or not?
