Maybe OEMS who want to license Opera for mobile computing will care, but your right. As far as the oh so bold %3 of people who don't use IE, longterm they'll probably all end up being Gecko users. The reasons for using Opera over Firefox for general browsing are slim to none. Before Firebird/FirefoxPhoenix came out they really had a point about Opera being lightweight as compared to the big monolithic Mozilla suite. But that was then and this is now. Nobody wants to pay for what you can get for free. If Opera can't establish itself as "the" browser for handhelds/pda's they don't have much of a future besides being a takeover target once their stock dips to sub $1.00 levels.
Sorry, I copyrighted the word "fuckers". Any written, oral, or pictorial representation belongs to me. Further use of the word "fuckers" will result in fines up to $100,000 per use and/or criminal punishment by a government branch of my choosing. Have a nice day.
I think this is yet another reason why people who aren't advanced users should wait until their distro maker puts out a new release with the 2.6 kernel and all its updated apps. Its not that much longer til 2.6 distros come out and then you'll be guaranteed that you gui cd burning apps will work. Kernel 2.6 isn't mandatory and compiling your own kernel isn't something that every single linux user needs to know how to do. Yea it nice to be able to do, but as a community we shouldn't be pushing newbies into major upgrades they may not be ready to do yet.
The first version I recall is 5.1 was which indeed based on Red Hat. From the Mandrake 5.1 release notes.
"Linux-Mandrake is an updated Linux-RH 5.1 GPL, with KDE 1.0 fully integrated and preconfigured in it. Those two parts have been (not so much) modified and improved to work properly together."
Red Hat didn't use to include KDE so we had to download it and configure it ourselves. Actually it was pretty easy. But for those who had heard of Linux and wanted the easiest to use DE (because of KDE) many tried Mandrake. I actually was a Huge Fan of Mandrake till about 7.2 IIRC. Man was that a good release. But since then I've simply not had anything good to say about their QA. Not to flame but IMHO since they simply stopped "building on" RH releases their quality has gone way downhill.
"2) Fedora is in fact the same as the Mandrake Cooker project, which started... 5 years ago."
Nope sorry Fedora is NOT the same as Cooker. Ever heard of Rawhide? Who is copying who again?
Second off Fedora releases go through a LOT of public testing unlike Rawhide and Mandrake Cooker. Fedora IS designed to be a stable release. Cooker, "Cooker is an experimental distribution, it's not for daily use!". Contrast that with "The goal of the Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free software.". Pretty dam big difference.
The ONLY difference between Fedora and Mandrake's new "community" product is the respective QA of each company and how long the releases are supported.
Good Troll, but *Red Hat* is the one innovating here.
First off the source to RHAS is available so feel free to download it and compile it yourself. New distros like Whiteboxlinux have done exactly that. Don't want to compile it or download it from someone who has? Spend your own money on R&D and then make your own distro. You can then give it away for free compiled or do whatever you want with it.
Second, comparing the Mandrake download version with what you get with RHAS is a disingenuous comparison at best. They simply aren't in the same league.

No actually the details do matter. They matter in the court of law. Contrary to popular belief you can't just buy your way into winning every lawsuit.
"We are in the way of SCO's using our code for commercial purposes. Therefore we are the enemy to be destroyed, "
Yea, so what? MS wants linux destroyed as well and you how well that's worked for them.
Look, your just acting a bit hysterical here. Facts and law do matter. And contrary to your sky is falling ideas Linux isn't going to be destroyed by anyone. If it turns out that Caldera released the code under the GPL 5 years ago or whatever then this is hugely damaging to the case. This IS helpful. You can't just dismiss that and say "well SCO will just think of some angle to spin this." My advice to you is relax a bit and ease off the coffee. This case will resolve itself and there is no indication from any repudiable legal counsel or expert that SCO will be the end of Linux.
Actually Linux still is a speedy, svelte, lightweight OS. I don't think your right when you just say server. That's just not a realistic outlook on how everyone uses Linux. There are a ton of Linux Window Managers out there at this point that are pretty darn light on the resources. Just because 2 of the more popular DE's take a hefty system to run doesn't mean that you can just categorically say Linux isn't lightweight anymore
Also KDE 1.x performed pretty well on the hardware of the day IMO. At least when you compared it to an OS which equaled its functionality, ala Windows 95. A P200 w 64MB worked pretty well. It was KDE 2.x that was a total dog and dragged ass. Also I found that pre-KDE desktops like fvwm, afterstep etc were all pretty quick and responsive. Mostly because they didn't offer much in the way of functionality. So the notion that traditionally Linux was a speedy desktop really wasn't unwarranted, the same goes today when you avoid GNOME and KDE.
As you mentioned though, luckily for Gnome and KDE today's hardware is such overkill.
Yes you are missing something. People aren't robots and don't want to be treated as such. Come down hard on everyone and take all of their enjoyment out of life and you'll have high employee turnover and bunch of workers who hate you. 300GB a month? Nobody downloads that much. Have a look at what any news provider charges for that much data. No provider is going to deal with that much of a hog.
I agree the whole "unlimited" but really its limited thing pisses me off. They should just be honest and state the limits up front. But 30GB per month is pretty reasonable.
Lastly, and I usually hate when people say this sort of thing, anyone bumping into that limit EVERY month is a warez monkey (not that I even disapprove or care about that). At that rate you'd run out of Linux/BSD distros and Free music to try within a few months. I mean come on, who are we trying to kid?

Exactly what are these "too many" Linux office suites? There are only 3 Linux offices suites of note from the last 3 years. Gnome Office, OpenOffice.org, and KOffice. Gnome Office aka abiword has had rtf import for years and so has OO. In fact IIRC koffice actually did have rtf in its early versions. Yea Koffice has lacked in the import filter department, but every other Linux Office app I know of has had rtf import ability since the 90's. Heck even ones from 4 years ago like applixware, Star office, and Wordperfect for Linux could do this. Linux Office suites may be lacking in several areas, but basic rtf import ability has never been one of them.
Buggy? Slow, Big YES. But buggy? No, not really. KOffice has the integration thing down, but its well behind OO functionality wise and isn't cross platform.
