Agreed. Furthermore, he took the plea bargin. Perhaps the real reason for doing this is that he had no case, and was guilty. The stories seem to have the slant that this guy was railroaded, and completely innocent. He could fight it (from the warrant to the charges) in court with his lawyers, that is his choice.
The ironic part is that this anti-governemnt/globalist person got noticed through the Internet, which got its start from an institution I am sure he oppooses (government military project - ARPANET).

There are several areas of potential economic benefit:
Cheaper consumer goods
New companies spring up becuase they have new freedoms to make deratives of the original
Hard dollar benefit to him (as you pointed out) is a good example
It could be a boost to the economy as a whole if it spurs more rapid innovation.

To win conservative minds on limiting extensions of copyrights, it is a good idea to prove that these limitations may have a greater economic benefit than extending them. I have seen some work in this area, but none that definitively proves this theory.
If only the Gore team was smart enough to win Tennessee. Then we would have the guy who contributed the most of any human to the creation of the Internet/WWW in the White House. Then he could single-handedly create the best email system ever for contacting the President.
Couldn't that be becuase we are more effecient at catching and prosecuting criminals (A more mature criminal justice system). Or could it be that the US actually keeps accurate prison statistics, where I doubt China does the same. Could it be that more crimes are committed in the US (maybe a result of greater freedoms allowed).
Probably depends on budget/situation. Freelance video professional may only have one desktop (me as hobbyist has one). Where a bigger production house has 50 so there are other machines to do rendering work freeing up other's desktops.
For me as a hobbyist (one desktop) I remember switching from a G3 to a G4 and it made a big dif. Compressing video, adding transitions to video was 20-30% faster.
Video rendering (e.g. from Raw DV to compressed Quicktime/mpeg4). Rendering effects into video (transitions etc...).

NASDAQ is down 2.6% as of 3:09 eastern time, so it is not out of line with the general market. Apple has some nice new products, but it had better translaet to sales and profits.
Sweden compared to the U.S.? Ha!. Two totally different places. Sweden has a population barely bigger than New York City. New York city alone has a 27% latino population, many of whom might be considered illiterate in the English language (by no fault of their own).
Landmass of Sweden is 449,964 sq km (size of Texas) compared to the U.S.'s 9,372,610 sq km
GDP per head $20,353 for Sweden and $32,042 for the U.S. Whew I can throw stats around too.
Lastly when you make comparisons please do a more thorough analysis. The U.S. is a complex place, and an innovative one. Sweden can thank the U.S. for the Internet later.
I am still trying to figure out how this whole thread even begins to address the issues raised in the story. well if we could just be more like the Flanders', we would all be better off.
Done ranting.
Or maybe in addition, the taxing jurisdictions in the U.S. can lower the myriad of payroll taxes, which might make it more attractive to hire here in the US.
$48 trillion in the hole? Try $6.57 trillion. That breaks down to $3,813,339,673,423.83 in public debt, and $2,765,187,280,398.68 in intragovernmental holdings. Maybe you just forgot a decimal point.
A lot of rich people give away (or plan to) their entire fortunes. Or they spend it on goods that contribute to jobs. Like Bill Gates' huge house. He paid a few people to build it. Or the rich invest the money in businesses, maybe giving someone like you capital to start a business. Either way it is a wash. If the government gets it they spend it or "invest" it. If a rich guy gets they spend it or invest it. One way or another it gets back into the economy. The question is who spends or invests more wisely?
It will start at a penny, but then expand as all taxes/levies/fees tend to. Have you looked at your phone or cable bill? Some idiot politician will come along and say that the spam tax needs to expand to 5 cents to feed the widows and orphans.
I hate spam as much as the next person, but unless these fees/taxes will only be paid by spammers then I am against it.
Actually, there is evidence that Apple users are at the more affluent end of the spectrum. Hypothesis: maybe that extra income means Apple users will buy more than the average music purchaser.

Exactly the point. Two completely different situations/countries.
My point is that there are many ways to measure a country's success. And the U.S. has produced a lot of innovations, compared to Sweden.

Not saying it is good, but it is a far cry from a FUD statement of $48 trillion.

.99 cents is much cheaper than paying $15 for an album with one good song. $10 an album is cheaper than buying most CD's new.
For some, including me, you get what you pay for. My mac just works and for some things works really well.
