I have noticed there is a serious flaw in the way people moderate and post (as some off topic subjects are brought to people attention by higher moderation) this makes the discussion to in directions which don't have nothing with the initial subject and this really annoying.

Please don't consider this as troll, I just consider the question asked to slashdot very interesting, can we please stick to just "Open Source GIS" ? please don't bring vaporous philosophical noise.

Alas this a widely spread misconception. To pick up girls being too honest is often a bad strategy! Being as you really are might make girls run away. Don't forget that girls LOVE to dream, and have often an idealistic view of the man of her dreams (prince charmant syndrom) you must understand what she is looking for and make her feel that you are absolutely the man of her dreams. Sorry guys this absolutely cynical! But this is really the way it works, use you fabulous geek brain for this absolutely strategic social skill :) . I have observed a lot of people with a lot of success with girls and this absolutely the way they act.

Second, Honesty and being too nice may end being absolutely dangerous, as many women will consider you as a "good friend" but not one they consider sexually attractive.

Alas, Women thinking has often nothing to do with Honesty and kindness at least during the dating process, while they may consider this as good family values they are looking in a good husband, but to simply bring them to your bed, it's often useless, or nearly useless. Yes with women YOU NEED to be somehow cynical, and this is something very difficult for many geeks.

Did you read the entire article ? this is basicaly what BearShare is trying to do in it's last incarnation, now in Alpha. BearShare 3.0 can be set as Peer (Gnutella Classic) Client (à la Napster client) no incoming requests are accepted, (Server) where it can be used as a hub for clients files contents (à la Napster Server). Servers don't have central repositories (à la Napigator) but discover themeselves using a specific BearShare protocol based itslef on te Gnutella protocol. To encourage servers prolification, users with high bandwidth are defaulted to Server.

I see this clearly as a very intersting development, which will lead to greater scalability, it's a kind of combination of a Napster and Gnutella network, I think this is the way to go.

They could go the troll tech way and release under GPL AND a commercial licence, as run times need to embed VCL objects if you are developping a GPL program then you can go for the GPL version if you want to develop a closed source program, fine ! then you need the Commercial version I fnd this very fair, and wouldn't hesitate a second to buy a commercial version if I was in the later case. They will just have to ask the copyright of the patchs to be assigned to them, as does the FSF, otherwise the patchs won't be incorporated. Most of the time (although not systematically) having its patch incorporated is a priviliege (witness Linux) so I am pretty sure developpers will accept. They have also the option to "buy" the most intersting patchs.

Technically speaking there is also a risk of forking, but "moraly" I don't see this happening, as most developers understand that Trolltech still need to make a leaving, to continue to improve QT. This will be like a stab in the back for someone who has given a lot to free software. Personally I won't hesitate to buy the commercial QT edition if I had to develop a closed product, I see this as a deserved reward for Troll Tech.

    > influence on technological development or not,
    > I couldn't say.

I have to agree here ! I view this as the main strength of English and more generally all the anglo-saxon languages.

When French use a "periphrase" or a sentence to mean a new concept, Eenglish often invent a new "word" which is associated with the concept, this is much stronger. I admit this linguistic and sociologic. When you do that you extend the vocabulary ! The Word and the Concept interact in very powerful way stregthening each other. This what "buzz word" is all about. I believe that English is much more subject to "Buzz words" than other languages I practice, for this same reason.

Something else, when I am programming I find it easier to name my functions or procedures in English than in French, because of this same concept thing. The meaning is easier to understand and is more concise if it's writen in English (for someone who speak both languages of course).

Here an example : In French you will call a function which fetch a value chercher_la_valeur, notice the pronoun, this a sentence ! while in English you will naturally call it : get_value, this closer to a concept than the French form.

Well maybe I am subjective too :)
