In my experience Gnome has been much more snappy in my 200/48 Mb pentium, conversly KDE is not usable at all, it doesnt't stop swaping a real nightmare to use.
This is exactly what Mozilla is trying to do with XUL, the idea is to code the UI in XML and render them with the browser, even the UI of the browser is writen in XUL too, the same goes for the UI of composer, the mail, and newsreader
Knuth is literally a computer's GOD, he is very well known for his serie a kind of Encyclpaedia of computer programing "The art of computer programing" were generations and generations of developers have studied, he has also done a lot of research in sorting and seraching algorithms, algorithm complexety, hash coding, grammar attributs, compilation, programming languages, he his also very well known for Tex (wich became LaTex) and Web (nothing to have with the WWWW) two typseting programs and many other things. I simply can't believe how a single person was able to do as many things.

Maybe Slashdotters can help B&N find prior art, not for the sake of the health of their business, but because this case seems to be about to get a lot of media coverage, so maybe it will attract more attention to this problem
Yes you are right, that's what the new XPFE the Mozilla folks are building is all about. The idea is to write and render the UI (using a browser) the same way you will write an HTML page, for this you use XUL it's a mixture of W3C standard compliant XML and CSS1, the scripting language is javascript. Here what thei web page say :
Contributing code to the Mozilla project has never been as easy as it is today. In the past, you had to be some C/C++/platform toolkit hotshot to add code, today all you really need is an understanding of JavaScript, HTML4.0, the W3C DOM, CSS, and most importantly a sense of adventure.

The lack of True Type font support is the major thing that prevents me for totally migrating to Linux, Mozilla under Linux with it's ugly font really sucks. Yes I know, there is xftstt but I didn't manage to install it.
With True Type font support Xfree86 will be a real contender in the Desktop realm
Software vendors, and among them M$ of course are now so wealty that they can spend the amount of money they want to lobby people who make decisions to have laws for them. I view this as a reaaly big problem in the american democracy, if you are rich you can more easily influence the law in the sens it suits you.
So what kind of democracy is it ? what make me sad is Europe is going exactly in the same way, software vendors are lobbying in exactly the same way to have patents on software; alas it seems in this part of the Atlantic sea that all what come from America is always good, talk about cultural imperialism.
Yes maybe this is a problem ! That's why these intiatives need quite a lot of Marketing, and Education, corporations need to be educated about the beneficts of Open Source, and understand the vertues of Co-petion.
The classical reaction of a corporation is to say, Hey why I am going to give a free ride to a competitor, which in fact might happen, the corporation must be shown then she can grab many other side beneficts the beneficts of Open Source.
Thanks Jon I have learned something now, though This is not a radical novelty, e-communities have always existed, what is ne is the "name" the "conpect" and as we now, as soon as you name something, in a certain sens you create it, if it's really original. This is true for ideas, this is also true for software, "Apache", "Linux", "Open Source" are "concepts" or "mems" when they are transmited.
Anyway, I believe that different kinds of communities, will thrive, secret ones, open communities, mercantiles, etc, what is really new is the strong belonging to a virtual community sentiment, the Open Source community has this strong feeling.
First SGI then Compaq, this is a real stream of good news. Linux is now heading quickly to world domination. Now if Compaq and SGI could subsidize a project like Wine by devoting some developers to this project, that would be really great, and in less than one year, bye bye M$
Yes I completly agree, I like it too; faster reports, I can't understand how/. choose it's links these days, they seem more and more insipid ! I like the new moderation system though !
