Netscape 4.x wasnt AS unstable if you did a full uninstall then reinstall the new version. IE is easy to write pages for because it doesnt always conform to standards..
Konqueror (if thats how you spell it) works better on more things than Mozilla. BUT the feel is tacky.
At the end of the day the profits will move from one company to the other. Walmart can pass these reductions along to the end user when the cd is 10 years old and nobody wants it..
The biggest by a long long way isnt an OS / Software related issue its people being stupid.
Its very easy to ring up "joan" the secretary and get her password then work from there,, its been proven time and time again. You can have the most secure systems in the world and the dumbest staff;)
There is always a catch 22 when dealing with this type of issue. By researching how to make the drug or tool utility music or whatever it maybe it costs money and time. But you make money at the end of the tunnel. The profit margins are always dropped when there are counerfiet/fake clones etc around. BUT if the initial product was cheaper more people could afford the goods and there would be less demand for clone/fake items and the cycle wouldnt be as dramatic.
as far as bandwidth congestion etc the commercial pipes are not that congested. But why would any carrier put home user traffic as a priority over corporate/business traffic. Its ridiculous to even think of something like that.
Optus has had several major security issues where crackers gained access to customer information. it has nothing to do with general connectivity. DoS attacking a country or provider and causing outages is one thing. Getting thier entire customer bases' personal information is a completely different ball game.
Who cares about a DoS attack if you can get the IRS or ATO information (just a hyperthetical)
Many people like to think that australia and new zealand are backwards counties down in the middloe of nowhere. In reality many of Australian businesses adopt technology and security standards much faster than thier US counterparts.
Its funny that many of the best security professionals throughout the 80s where based from Australia. This trend has continued and Australian businesses are often well prepared and secured. This is obviously a fairly big generalisation with companies like Optus having major breakings etc most of the major corporates in australia have a very good security history.
Realistically IF you have data you dont want hidden or read then dont put it on the net.. If you have information that you want everyone to know and see mirror it around the internet as many times as you can.. There is NO way that once information is on the internet and about that the FBI or any gov can remove it from the net.
Netscape and mozilla are and have always been good browsers. Stability issues and java often plagued netscape 4.x but overall it was more secure and had less serious issues than IE.
I have NEVER been an IE user always using any alternative.. its good to know that there are more options now to use..
generally speaking linus is a fairly well rounded individual. He would include things in and not include things that have some sort of reason behind it. Its not generally a "i dont like you its not going in" thing if its better for the community.
On the down side this will just make more windows users with modem connections unable to download and fix thier systems due to the enormous time taken to complete the downloads. For example Downloading from windows update on a 33.6 from south africa is like walking across broken glass with bare feat and it raining vinegar.
On the plus side at least microsoft are now patching thier operating systems and the push forward in security is obviously occuring.
Does microsoft release thier updates on CD free? that would be a plus.
This is true, london is alreaddy facing issues with the large tides that sweet up the thames, This can be seen by looking up the thames barrier as just one of many examples of ways they are trying to mitigate the floods. Its going to get warmer (based on most reports) around the equator which is where I am actually from. and thats where the problems will be most dramatic. especially as most developing countries are around the equator. Developing countries like bangladesh will just become underwater cities if the water levels rise any more and the hymalaya melt contines...
All in all the weather will be more dramatic and people on hills will have very valuable land;0
Its one thing to register the domain names in question. Its another thing to actually have traffic to those domain names. In this case hes had an abundance of free publicity and the search engines/slashdot affect would do the site a world of good. Generally this wouldnt have been the case with out the large press/publicity/scam campaign that is currently occuring.
maybe I should register a few thousand political domain names.. then link them all to eachother.. create a post on slashdot mentioning it.. then change the content on the pages to something thats worth while.. then the search engines will redirect viagra requests.. oops i mean legit traffic to my site.
Its always good to know that we are researching more ways to radiate our heads in favor of greater profit margins for big business. Soon we will all wear lead lined caps and clothes and the truth about the increase risk of cancer and other health issues will become more apparent. Then we can all sue telco companies (and big business) for health reasons which will in the long term affect corporate profit..
Its always good to have a bright outlook on corporate life..
There are so many compounded issues in regards to these figures. The results are very likely to be accurate. The issues that cause increases like this are always no single reason. We are still logging vast amounts of forrest even in the developed world. Its not just something that occurs in the "developing world" like people like to imagine/dream up. Compounding the massive reduction in trees (amazon, daintree etc etc being logged) with the huge and seaddy population increase, and higher than ever demand on power/services because of the increased population... coupling just these factors together makes a massive difference.
End results a warmer world, greater variety of weather patterns and a more F-ed up place to live in for most of the developing world. Most of the "first world" countries will be able to spend the money to shield our poor white arses from the additional heat.. thanks to air con.. but then the issues will be compounded further with the further increase in energy needs..
The end result is people dont want to make the sacrifices on a broad enough level to make a big enough difference fast enough to make a difference in the long term. Coupling Co2 levels with so2 levels increasing as well.. we are in for a real roller coaster ride..
It comes down to the digital music revolution. Its rare these days that an album contains all good songs. So why pay for songs that are no worth listening to or not your ideal type of song. Personally I download large volmes of music from p2p networks. However I like many people i know purchase the albums or songs (from stores like itunes etc) once I am sure that I like the song. Personally I feel ripped off by the music industry when I buy an album for one song. Yes its good for the person that has put in the time to write/play etc etc the music but do they get the money for the music they perform?
How many times have you bought an album and only liked a few songs on there? Im sure the feeling is all too common in the tech community. Its been a long time since ive been impressed with an entire album of songs (see U2 best of 1980 to 1990 kicks arse). And who really wants to listen to those prefab boy bands / girlie bands that have clearly had thier balls/personality removed/reprogrammed if it ever existed. The music industry needs to get a clue.
This is good news. Although we can only hope that this is a start of things to come. With the high level of SPAM coming from the US (based on spamhaus stats http://www.spamhaus.org/ ) If more fines are to come for US based spam operators hopefully other countries will follow suit. (as seen with recent Australian legal developments).
The biggest issue here is this is only the tip of the ice berg. And a one off wont do enough to scare spammers. Its all about volume and consistancy.
This is an important development in many ways for the internet community. Having a higher level of internet censorship in china will result in a lower level of child porn etc.
Recently there was a report published that outlined the large and growing problem of child porn sources from asian countries. One of the issues within that report was the chinese security issues resulting in a large volume of child porn being stored on "cracked" servvers.
Hopefully this will help reduce SOME of the problem. Every little bit helps. Obviously its not just aimed at this type of content.
KDE gets a greater number of people using it as its got a nice centralised system to manage most components. That is the one aspect that makes me use KDE over Gnome even though I would love to use the exchange connectors and so on.
I used gnome first off.. didnt like it as there was no easy to use and configure place for the componets. Ive since started using kde as my default and I never have any problems...
Though it is a shame that there are more corporate packages availible for gnome (ximian etc etc etc). If only KDE had proper exchange/callendar support.
As with many of these fundaementalist parties in australia the reality is that they wont get very many votes. If they do they are more than likely to be 18-24year olds doing the donkey vote and not realising that its a serious issue. Good thing its compulsory to vote in australia so people are less likely to get into power through donkey votes.
It doesnt matter if its fast. I know with myself and many other people I know.. when they think java they think unstable. Lets hope they have more stable releases now.
Its always interesting when you see companies come out with ideas like this that are clearly not really a viable solution.
I know that I am on several very very busy mailing lists that recieve around 7000 emails a week through. Even on several of these lists it would take me a years at least to fill up even 10% of the 100gb space. So let me ask.. Why would the average person want a 1TB email account.
Sounds like a good way to distribute warez and other pirate software. Just give your mates access to your email account. Perfect place to store all your backups as well. Maybe this is the solution we have always been looking for as a home user disaster recovery setup.
Hard drive just crashed. install the OS and download your.tar.gz backup files. Works a treat im sure.
if even 10,000 people filled even half of thier space the company would be broke;0
Yes, Microsoft is great blab blab blab.. But realistically what makes bill gates more important than the guy that runs the coders in the bacement ? really has bill gates actually coded anything at all in the last 20years? has he ever written any code.. If so was it any good?
Bill gates has got some good business sense if somewhat unethical to many people. But the tallents of people are on different planes so putting them in a tie is a little daft in my opinion.
As someone that enjoys speleology this is a remarkable achievment to anyone. However when they say the worlds deepest cave they really dont know how deep so many of the caves are that have been discovered and never explored due to lack of oxygen in these caves. There is always a certain level of histeria when claims are made about speleology and how deep people go when in reality we just dont know yet how deep many of the caves are or whats down some of them.
