  1. Re:disposing of the waste is only a third of the p on Amec Working on Long-Term Nuclear Waste Solution · · Score: 1

The issue in this conversation is waste products. When it comes to the production and use of solar power it maybe inefficient but if every house in every city had thier roof (which is wasted space in many places) covered with solar power the issue of space wouldnt be as difficult. Couple that with a large stash of batteries (yes polution from them too) and it would be ok with excess energy going back to the grid for others to use.

Hydro power doesnt always mean river ecosystems there are successful hydro generators using tidal currents although not as efficient at this stage.

Wind generators are not pretty.. but they work. and bird issues are not as bad as people like to claim. Reports from the wind fields in germany have said the problem was only an initial issue while the birds learnt about them.

At this stage in our evolution it comes down to us reducing our energy usage. Recycling, increasing the trees in the world rather than chopping them down. Recycle Reduce Reuse.

  2. its not about kernel recompiling vs not on Solaris vs Linux Continues · · Score: 2, Interesting

Sun doesnt need to have its kernel recompiled all the time because it doesnt have as diverse a hardware support as linux does. YES linux could be built with support for just about anything and everything but then it would be called lin-bloatware. Solaris in my experience has performed better than linux for longer periods of time under higher load. I have seen this time and time again (in 2.2 and 2.4 kernel series). We are still running 8 Solaris servers on intel hardware and 8 linux 2.6 based systems on the same hardware. BOTH are configured identically as far as apache and used services are concerned. Generall the Solaris 9 systems are more reliable (even on x86) than the same linux boxes on 2.4. Yet to be determined for 2.6 although 2.6 does appear to outperform the solaris system at this stage (uptime yet to be determined).

So realistically solaris is still king between linux and solaris. However FreeBSD is still more of a realistic competitor to solaris.. Where is the press on that?

But in the end any *nix flavor is better than none. Long live solaris and linux both have thier benefits and both have drawbacks. Realistically there is NO PERFECT OS!!. (and as long as humans make OS's there never will be).

Realistically the issue here is waste management. BUT its not really. Why cant we start to invest in more renewable resource based energy like solar, wind, hydro, the list goes on. That way we dont have to come up with solutions to dispose of deadly nuclear / atomic waste. I know that sounds tree huggish but at the same time its the reality of it. We are causing so many other environmental issues because we rely too heavily on fossil/nuclear power.

Lets hope that this can be a further trend to people doing things for themselves and innovation will surely be the real benefit from this. This is an example of the DVD standards...

Plus if you do audit your code there isnt always a garrnetee that your eyes will pick it up.

Flexibility and fast release times make opensource a very viable option. And most exploits are not remotely exploitable to servers (unlike many of Microsofts issues as one example)...

I use opensource for the majority of my personal work but I still believe that windows/microsoft is benefitcial to the industry as a whole. So adding additional work to ISPs will / could often be the straw that broke the camels back. But at the same time I believe the best way to get ISPs working FOR everyone else. Is if they are being the source of an abnormally high percentage of spam then thier IPS or something need to be threatened. In a world where the most part of IPv4 space is taken this would be more than catastrophic. and having IP space isnt a right its a priviliedge.

But having said that its very very difficult for ISPs to fully lock down thier services. We implemented a system where outbound port 25 was blocked to all clients. And our internal SMTP servers where rate limited on a per IP basis for clients. this killed spam for the most part. Then customers would find open proxies etc so the problem then went up again. Its hard to really combat and its a full time job in itself fighting spam from users of your own ISP. Thats even with disconnecting customers etc for spamming. (they often just sign up with a different false name and pay cash or similar).

Its good in theory difficult and costly in practise.
