I've read that Ghandi actually criticized the Jews of Nazi Germany for remaining (relatively) silent for so long. As I recall, he said something to the effect that if they'd held a peaceful protest, and forced the Nazis to kill a lot of them, then the public outcry would've been sufficient to prevent later atrocities.

Yes, and there is certainly no way to appreciate one's fellow humans without gettin' Jesus... I would actually say that an atheist with morals is superior to a christian with morals, because the atheist acts decently with no heavenly reward dangled in front of him.

Actually, Shakespeare is widely considered to have pandered to the lowest common denominator (Hence all the gore and sex in many of his works). Don't know about Van Gogh, but the majority of artists throughout history have catered to the wishes of someone other than themselves, be it patrons, advertising companies, or just the invisible hand of the marketplace. Not saying it's the only way; just that its a viable one.

If you're into hip-hop, I encourage you to take the trouple to check out both Dragon Ash and Lamp Eye, two Japanese artists. As far as online music *ahem* communities go, the best one for finding new music is Soulseek (www.slsk.org), due to its napster-esque chat rooms.
